Sydney and John both live at Sherrell House Care Home in Chigwell and have formed a close connection through their shared love of Arsenal Football Club.
As lifelong fans, these gentlemen frequently talk about their love for the club and share the highs and lows they have been through while following their team.
As a care home that is dedicated to aligning people’s passions with the events and activities they host, the team at Sherrell House were determined to create a truly meaningful experience and provide an opportunity to create new cherished memories.
Following several weeks of communication with Arsenal Football Club, the team were able to secure tickets to a private ‘Legends Tour’ at the Emirates Stadium with Arsenal Icon, Charlie George.
Sydney and John were delighted when they heard what they would be doing, especially in the presence of Charlie George.
During the journey to the stadium, the gentlemen spent time sharing stories, laughter, and memories connected to the club. They spoke about the last matches they had attended, their favourite players, and moments that had stayed with them over the years.
Together, the group explored the stadium, learnt more about Arsenal’s history, and enjoyed the atmosphere from pitchside - a moment that truly brought the experience to life for both Sydney and John.
Charlie George made the visit even more memorable through his humour, warmth, and stories from his football career. As soon as Sydney spotted him, his face lit up and he said: “I recognise you and what a fantastic goal that was.” It was a moment of pure joy seeing the trio connecting over their shared passion for Arsenal Football Club.
Following the tour, Sydney and John enjoyed photo opportunities with Charlie George and their families. Surrounded by his grandchildren, Sydney described the day as “my magic moment.” He was also able to recreate a treasured photograph with one of his grandchildren outside the Emirates Stadium, which
was originally taken in 2011. To stand in the same place years later, recreating that memory was a really special moment.
John also experienced his own ‘magic moment’ during the visit. He had brought with him a framed photograph from the 1971 FA Cup Final, a match he attended where Charlie George scored the winning goal against Liverpool to secure Arsenal’s historic Double. The photograph has pride of place in John’s room at Sherrell House and represents a treasured memory from his life. Charlie kindly signed the photograph during the visit, creating a lasting keepsake for John to cherish.
To make the day even more memorable, Arsenal Football Club gifted Sydney and John Arsenal shirts and signed photographs to take home. Special thanks also went to Stadium Tour Manager, Kane, whose support helped to make the experience unforgettable for everyone involved.
At Sherrell House, person-centred care means recognising every individual’s interests, life experiences, and personal connections. Opportunities like this help to show how the team support people to continue the hobbies and interests they have enjoyed throughout their lives.
