Residents from Highview Lodge Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, enjoyed a wonderful day trip to Whipsnade Zoo on 24th April 2026 as part of celebrations surrounding World Earth Day.
The idea for the trip came after the Lifestyle Coordinator visited Whipsnade Zoo personally and discovered the zoo’s access scheme, which offers discounted tickets for charities, schools, and care homes. After successfully applying for the scheme, the team organised the outing to coincide with World Earth Day. The visit gave residents the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, connect with nature, and reminisce about past visits to the zoo during their younger years.
Throughout the day, residents explored a variety of attractions across the zoo. The group began their visit in the butterfly house, where butterflies took a particular liking to resident Jon, creating plenty of laughter among the group. They then attended the Birds of the World show, learning more about climate change and the importance of protecting wildlife, before visiting the farm area for an engaging animal talk.
Residents also travelled around the zoo by coach, spotting lions, giraffes, ostriches, and flamingos along the way. The day concluded with everyone enjoying ice cream together in the sunshine.
The atmosphere throughout the day was joyful, relaxed, and full of excitement, with residents engaging in conversations, reminiscing, and enjoying each other’s company.
Highview Lodge Care Home continues to provide meaningful experiences and enriching activities that support wellbeing, social engagement, and person-centred care for residents.
