My mother was admitted to Highview in early June and she has settled in with the help of all the staff. They have all been so caring and kind. Always helpful, thoughtful and take time to talk to family members to get to know them too and make everyone feel welcome. All of their hard work is very
much appreciated.

I am delighted with the care my sister receives from all the staff at Highview. This residential care home is so bright and clean, unlike many - no adours!
The residents are never left alone. There is always a carer on hand every moment of the day.
Meals are excellent, and during the day, the residents
are given drinks and snacks.
Daily reports are written every time a carer attends to the residents and is totally 'up to date'. A massive thank you.

I am very grateful to Highview Lodge for making my mother-in-law's final months happy and comfortable. The staff were amazing. However, there were six members of staff who went above and beyond and warrant a special mention.
One, in particular, was always around to assist and monitor my mother-in-law,
so much so that he has been an extension to our family and we will miss him, he's a very caring and professional young man.

On the whole, we were given good info and a very friendly welcome. The home is very clean, Mum's room is always clean and fresh which is brilliant. It's unclear how much interaction the residents get. I know they have activities and trips but this must only account for a fraction of their time. There
is hardly ever anything going on when we visit to encourage any brain activity or well-being. It could also be made clear which staff levels are which and who to ask about how Mum is. When I keep asking I'm always given a friendly answer but it feels like a battle to get info.

Unfortunately, my dad has been put into Highview Lodge as he has dementia, my mother has been unwell and has been struggling to look after and care for my dad with care he deserves. I, myself and my wonderful wife have been helping and caring as much as we can but can not be there for 24 hours, so we
made the difficult decision to place Dad into respite. As the weeks have passed, we have seen the amazing care he is getting, we are now trying to get Dad permanently placed. This has been an extremely hard decision for us to make but the wonderful staff have been amazing for us, there are three that really have been amazing, going up and beyond, one member of staff is shining light and the manager, I think, greeted us on the first day in pyjamas as it was pj day. The manager made us feel at ease and nearly every visit, she lets us know how Dad has been. There are so many staff that stand out and all need praising, everyone, from management to cleaners, is fantastic.
Well done everyone and thank you.

I cannot fault the service provided. All staff are very caring, patient and demonstrate a high standard throughout the home. The manager and senior staff are always accessible and make time to discuss any matters of interest or concern. There is clearly a high standard of compliance with safety, care
and security of residents - very apparent. Our mother is treated as an individual with dignity and full appreciation of her needs, her likes and dislikes by all. I am kept fully informed of any matters affecting her and the staff at Highview Lodge have my complete trust and gratitude.

My mother was admitted to High View Lodge in December 2021 having lived independently for many years but was finding coping at home to be increasingly challenging and was feeling the isolation imposed by her inability to leave the house alone. Clinical care is excellent and we are kept updated by staff
who have gone to great pains to get to know her (and us) and her individual needs. She is a bright, intelligent and well-informed woman and it is gratifying that the staff do not speak to her condescendingly as sometimes happens with the elderly. She is treated as an individual, undoubtedly cared for and has formed good friendships with residents and staff. Security is excellent. Covid restrictions by necessity are strictly upheld. As much as anyone can be who has to go into care, she is happy. The home is clearly well managed with robust attention to staffing, safety and care by a kind, caring and effective manager. Administration is excellent. I really cannot fault High View Lodge.

The standard of care seems to vary and not be consistent some days I am very happy, and another day I will feel very concerned. Some days there are staff around actively achieving things, on other days the home is clearly short-staffed, and residents' needs are neglected, also the standard of care varies
from worker to worker some genuinely care about the residents and their welfare. Some carers are just doing a job and put in less and minimum effort. It would be better for everyone if the approach was more consistent and the workload is fairly distributed.

The staff go above and beyond caring for patients in the home.
My mother has a long connection with the home starting with day care and respite and now has been a resident for some, her health has deteriorated and mobility is very unsteady, the staff treat her as a part of the very big family which
very comforting for her and for us as you have place your loved ones into a safe and caring community, I can say that this is a very good safe and caring home, If something is not usual with resident they contact the doctor and then you and reassure you that all is well if they have to go to hospital again they explain the problem and tell you where they are so that you can then follow up to the hospital.
They have made us all part of a happy family they ensure that the residents needs come first.

My mum was admitted during the first lockdown in 2020 and as you can imagine it was stressful for us as a family. The whole team at High View Lodge really helped put us at ease and kept me updated as at that time visitors weren’t allowed. As time has gone on mum has settled in well and loves her new
home. Everyone is always friendly and I have never felt concerned about mums welfare. Mum loves her room and especially the view from her window! She has gained the weight she needed to and continues to thrive. As a visitor, I am always made to feel welcome and never a nuisance. All in all I am very happy with the home and the care provided.

This care home is currently under investigation by Social Services safeguarding team.
My Mum went in to continue her rehab and was there for 11 days and they kept telling me they had covid so I couldn't visit her. I finally managed to get in under the essential caregiver scheme and had to call an emergency
ambulance. Mum spent 17 days in the hospital and 8 weeks later has still not made it home and may never fully recover from what they did to her.

I can not thank the wonderful management and staff at High View Lodge enough for the care and dignity thay have provided for my nan during her stay at High View.
She is due to leave there next week to go home to her own flat after being told by professionals that she would never walk again.
The first
day my nan went into that home the manager said to us don't you worry we will have her up and back home in no time!
And wow what can I say she's done it!
I can't thank the staff at High View enough for the care that has been provided to my nan. She always had lovely things to say about the staff and me working in care myself was so good to hear.
Well done team High View you have done amazing you have been a pleasure.

I'm not impressed with the service my mother received at High View Lodge, Hemel Hempstead.
I have now moved my mother to a different care home where she is receiving a far superior level of care.
Also, I found communication with High View Lodge very bad, some days I couldn't get through on the phone
after trying over 10 times to call.

My mother has been at High View now for 14 months and previous to that she came in for respite a few times a year. I have always been pleased with everything at High View Lodge especially the respect and dignity shown to all residents but this year as we all know has been so difficult for so many people
but the Manager and staff at High View have been exceptional. Under such difficult circumstances this year they have all worked so hard and cared so much for our loved ones and kept them safe and well. The pressure that the Manager and staff have had to deal with has been tremendous but they have always been so professional and helpful at all times. High View Lodge have been amazing through this pandemic and great respect to all the staff and for being so well lead by the manager. Thank you.

Current Review Score: 9.0 (9.040)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (9.040) out of 10 for Highview Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.556 for Highview Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (75 Excellents x 5) + (33 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 117 Ratings = 4.556
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.484 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Highview Lodge is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 77 registered maximum number of service users is 15.4. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 15.4 = 0.584
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
