Brambles honoured for its care for veterans

As we approach VE Day, team and residents at Sanctuary Care’s Brambles Residential Care Home in Redditch are celebrating after the home proudly achieved Veteran Friendly Framework (VFF) status.

This prestigious accreditation recognises the not-for-profit home’s unwavering commitment to honouring the unique experiences of veterans in our community, supporting their practical, emotional and social needs.

As part of this commitment the team, which currently cares for 10 veterans, has forged strong connections with local community groups like the Royal British Legion, with the home’s veterans attending its local breakfast clubs, a place they can meet fellow veterans and those connected to the armed forces community.

Poppies are discreetly place on residents’ bedroom doors, to remind staff and visiting healthcare professionals of their service history.

The Sanctuary Care home also has dedicated Veteran Champions - team members who have completed specialist training and now share their knowledge with colleagues to ensure the highest standards of care for veterans and their families.

One of those is home manager Andrew Green, himself a veteran, having served with the Royal Corps of Transport in Northern Ireland at the height of the troubles there. Andrew explained his passion for supporting veterans in our community. “I know only too well the difficulty of transitioning from the Army to civilian life.

The Armed Forces is one big family and I believe the older you become, you reminisce and crave the old feelings of belonging and camaraderie even more. That is why in my position as the home’s manager, I feel passionate about creating a place where our veterans - and of course all our residents, feel safe and loved, with a great sense of belonging to our community.”

The VFF is a collaboration between Armed Forces charities Royal Star & Garter, Royal British Legion and NHS Veterans’ Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA).

Kathryn Glass is the VFF Project Lead at Royal Star & Garter and responsible for supporting and assessing care homes going through the scheme. She said: “We’re delighted that Sanctuary Care’s Brambles Residential Care Home has achieved VFF?status. This is a great commitment to their continuous improvement?in the delivery of person-centred care for veteran residents and their partners.”
