At Burford House Care Home, continuous learning is at the heart of everything we do. As part of our commitment to achieving an Outstanding CQC rating, we have introduced our innovative Wednesday Workshops programme. This is a team-led training initiative designed to promote learning, confidence, collaboration and excellence in care.
These weekly workshops provide a unique opportunity for team members from all departments to share knowledge and discuss best practice. Moreover, they inspire one another through engaging and interactive learning sessions. Empowering Staff Through Shared Learning
Unlike traditional training programmes, our Wednesday Workshops are driven by the interests and experiences of our team members. Staff identify hot topics, emerging issues within the home, and areas where additional knowledge could benefit residents and colleagues alike.
Sessions are delivered using a variety of methods including: • Informal drop-in learning sessions • Interactive discussions • Presentations and slideshows • Practical demonstrations • Question-and-answer activities • Case studies and reflective practice exercises • This flexible approach ensures learning remains engaging, relevant and accessible for everyone.
"Our workshops give every member of the team a voice. Staff are encouraged to share their expertise, experiences and ideas, creating a culture where learning comes from every level of the organisation," said the Management Team at Burford House.
Building Confidence and Developing Future Leaders
One of the greatest successes of the Wednesday Workshops has been the confidence they have built among staff members.
Employees who may never have considered leading a training session are now confidently presenting to colleagues and facilitating discussions. They are also sharing valuable insights from their own experiences. This not only develops presentation and leadership skills, but also encourages healthy competition and professional pride across the home.
The initiative reflects key Outstanding CQC principles, including: • Ensuring staff feel engaged, valued, confident and inspired to grow, driving innovation and continuous improvement. • Recognising the continuing development of staff skills, competence and knowledge as integral to delivering high-quality care. • Supporting staff to use transferable skills and share good practice. • Creating systems that actively embed learning to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for residents.
Real Examples of Staff-Led Learning
The variety of workshop topics demonstrates the wealth of knowledge and commitment within our team.
Clinical Excellence Through Reflective Practice Esrat, one of our Care Practitioners, independently completed a detailed case study involving a resident she had been supporting. During her workshop session, she shared her findings with colleagues. She highlighted how changes in practice had positively impacted the resident's wellbeing.
The session encouraged clinical reflection, strengthened person-centred care approaches and demonstrated how evidence-based learning can directly improve outcomes for residents.
Understanding Risk and Dementia Care Charles, one of our Night Healthcare Assistants, heard about an extreme incident involving violence on a dementia unit that had been reported in the media. Recognising the learning opportunity, he developed a workshop exploring risk assessments and early intervention strategies. He also addressed the importance of understanding individual resident behaviours. His session sparked valuable discussion among colleagues and reinforced the importance of proactive observation and person-centred dementia care.
Evidencing a Culture of Continuous Improvement Each workshop produces tangible evidence of learning and development. Staff create their own learning resources, which may include: • Presentations • Discussion topics • Learning handouts • Question sheets • Case studies • Practical demonstrations Attendance is recorded through signed registers, and all workshop materials are stored within the home's CQC evidence folder on the V-drive. This creates a comprehensive record of continuous learning and improvement. Most importantly, staff members are enthusiastic and confident when discussing the initiative with visitors, professionals and inspectors. As a result, they demonstrate the positive impact the programme has had on workplace culture.
Supporting Outstanding Outcomes for Residents
The ultimate goal of the Wednesday Workshops is not simply staff development. Instead, it is about improving the lives of the people we support.
By creating opportunities for staff to share knowledge, challenge thinking and learn from one another, Burford House Care Home is strengthening its culture of excellence. Therefore, residents receive the highest quality, person-centred care possible.
"Our team members are our greatest asset. By investing in their development and encouraging them to lead learning, we are creating a stronger, more knowledgeable workforce that continually strives to improve outcomes for our residents."
As Burford House continues its journey towards Outstanding, the Wednesday Workshops stand as a shining example of innovation, engagement and a genuine commitment to excellence in care.
