I found the staff were very helpful and friendly and wishing to ensure I was happy with them all. They all quickly remembered me and my name when I was often looking at their name tag they all had. They were quick to ensure they were available to answer any questions I had. They also enquired of me if there was anything more they could do to make sure Heather, my wife was comfortable and happy there. Questions were asked about Heather and the sort of things she had pleasure from. There often seemed to be things going on in the home to involve all staying there. The rooms table chairs etc where kept clean and I often observed carers ensuring that that happened.

I was comforted that Heather was being well personally cared for and that staff seemed to make sure that was part of their daily tasks, without it in anyway being a chore. If I rang up for any reason there was always some one promptly to answer my call.

Westwood only has about 16 patients all of which seemed to me to have differing aspects to their dementia. but all respected and helped and understood. this is most important to the patient I feel. Staff were always readily available to help or advise when ever I visited the home and where interested to learn things about their patients that may help them in looking after ones relatives. Seemed a happy environment and in the good weather a garden to be enjoyed and offer a little walk round for all. Drinks of tea etc always available and in the warm weather ice lollies and ice cream to help patients get liquid on board. All staff seemed genuinely happy and very willing to spend time with individuals as need arose, never ever any excuse from staff to be back in a few minutes. The attention was there and willingly given to make patients as happy and content as they could.

From mum arriving at the home, staff have made us feel welcome and valued. At all times mum is cared for with respect, dignity and treated with exceptional care. Nothing is too much trouble and you soon feel.part of the family. Staff are approachable and always keep you fully updated of any medical treatment needed. They provide excellent daily activities making sure everyone, no matter what their personal circumstances or needs are encouraged to join in and take part. Staff are always available to take time out to chat and give reassurance. I know I can leave mum in safe hands where her individual needs will be met. I highly recommend this home.

From our initial enquiries we were treated with respect and empathy. The journey was made easier by our meetings with managers and careers who listened to our questions and if they couldn't answer immediately found out for us. All contact was dealt with promptly. The activities for Christmas were engaging and upbeat. It's very early days but I feel that should I have any concerns they will be dealt with quickly and efficiently.

Mum was only at Abbey Lea for a matter of weeks, but during her stay she was happy and well cared for, and enjoyed chatting with the staff and being amongst the other residents.

On her death, the staff were excellent. They were professional, caring, respectful and kind. I couldn't have asked for more.

My family member was resident for two years and at first the overall care including staff and management was very good but has rapidly gone downhill (in particular management) who treated my family member very badly and lied about giving a separate downstairs room needed due to mobility issues as they insisted she could only share a room with another resident at the full price with barely any privacy or security. The carers were lovely and so helpful but unfortunately our relationship with the management was untenable so we had to move my family member to another care home which is much nicer and has many more advantages thankfully eg a single room, more privacy and fit for purpose which Westwood Care Home is not, decor also much better and with welcoming staff. I would definitely not recommend Westwood Care Home at all unfortunately.

Reply from Helen Thompson, Director at Westwood

We are sorry you feel dissatisfied with Westwood's care for your Mother. Older care homes like ours often have a mix of single and larger shared rooms, carefully allocated based on needs, preferences and mobility. Shared rooms can sometimes be better situated for a resident with the added benefit...

Our lovely mum unfortunately was only at Westwood for a short time, but during her stay she was shown so much compassion, sensitivity towards her care and needs. The staff always warmly spoke to mum when they entered her room, helping her to know of their presence and informed her what care was going to be carried out. As a family we always recieved a warm welcome, staff communicated with us every step of the way and on Mum's final day they were very supportive, which we were truly grateful for, can't thank them enough. While searching for a suitable care home for our Mum and reading loads of reviews, which is a huge responsibility, plus all the emotional feelings attached with this decision making. Westwood gained less stars for their decor being dated, I can honestly say I would take their OUTSTANDING care over scuffed wallpaper any day. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a new home or home for their loved ones. Keep up your fantastic work. Thanks again.

Westwood Care home is a truly warm friendly home from home environment. The staff are fabulous and the management care! They do their best in difficult Financial Times to raise money for lots of entertainment and activities for the residents who always look happy what ever time of day one visits.

Westwood took Mum with no notice as an emergency placement in March 2024. It was during a very stressful time for Mum and the family. The staff were fantastic in helping Mum to settle in her totally new environment and Mum enjoyed the stimulation of staff and making new friends. The staff are so patient letting Mum help with cleaning, tidying and other household tasks! These kind interactions have helped Mum to develop lovely bonds with the staff improving Mum's communication and reducing her stress and anxiety. Nothing is ever too much trouble. Residents are given food and drink on an individual basis, when required, such as sleeping late. Mum also enjoys lunch and supper eating with her friends. The home is flexible and works around family requests, nothing is too much trouble. I am grateful for everything they patiently do (or not do, if Mum chooses!) as she is as happy and content as she can be at Westwood. I always feel welcome when visiting. It's a lovely caring home.

First-class care is always given to my mum. All the staff are kind, caring and show compassion towards the residents. Mum is very content at Abbey Lea, all her needs at met, they go over and above to support mum. Her room is always clean, comfortable and warm. There are always activities which are adapted for Mum as she is constantly in bed. The food menu always has a good selection of choice.
The home is very welcoming to relatives/visitors and the staff keep the relatives updated if they have any concerns. Nothing is ever a problem at any time day or night. I would definitely recommend Abbey Lea to anyone.

My Mum has been a resident in Westwood Care Home since January 2020. The care she has received in that time has been excellent, during COVID I had no concerns as I was regularly updated by the manager. The food is always excellent and well planned with plenty of variety. There is always regular entertainment for the residents with residents families encouraged to attend. Residents' families are always made welcome by the staff, a legacy from the previous manager who was the manager of the home for 21 years. Some of the staff go above and beyond in their care for every resident. The home is badly in need of the decor updating, but the care is the most important thing and I would recommend Westwood Care Home to anybody.

Abbey Lea Care Home has a reputation locally of being one of the best care homes in the area. There is a friendly, caring atmosphere and staff support the residents and families visiting. The activities available are wide from fitness classes, animals visiting, bingo, music etc. to celebrating birthdays etc. My relative's room was immaculate, warm and homely. She was very happy there. My mother is a resident at Abbey Lea and I live far away so am unable to visit her frequently. I didn't really want her to be in a care home so was very apprehensive the first time I visited her. To my absolute delight, she was thriving there. She was happy, safe and joining in all the great activities they have daily. This was a complete 180 from when she was living alone as she was so depressed, confused and isolated. The staff there are all so dedicated to their jobs and genuinely care about each and every resident so it really is more like a big family. All of the staff including management interact positively with the residents every day and are always finding ways to make Abbey Lea as warm, happy and homely as it can be. I would not want my loved one to be anywhere else and I know she wouldn't either. It really is a lovely place. Well done to all.

My very good friend's dementia took hold quite rapidly and despite being confused with his new living situation, he warmed to the staff at Abbey Lea immediately as they helped him to settle into his new home. We both found the whole care team, including management, to be very helpful, understanding and kind. It can be a rare thing to find kindness and care wrapped up in professionalism and humility. Abbey Lea very quickly began to know my friend well; his likes and dislikes, his sense of humour, his love of nature and being outdoors, his favourite foods (cooking all homemade) and which tipple he likes at a party! They have many activities on offer throughout the year and always try to think about what all the residents might enjoy. I have seen the staff first-hand encouraging residents to socialise with one another and also take the time to sit and chat with them. It makes me happy to know that my friend is well cared for and as happy as he can be at Abbey Lea. Thank you all.

Both my parents have been living in Westwood Care Home since the summer.
Dad was admitted first and settled extremely quickly. At home, prior to moving into Westwood, he would spend most days sleeping. He suffers from dementia and therefore now requires around-the-clock care. Dad’s quality of life has vastly improved. It is very rare to see him sleeping and his mobility has improved significantly. The meals in Westwood are made to suit each resident’s needs and Dad has always loved his food. He is very happy and always smiling. The staff have been amazing with his care.
Mum suffered a nasty fall and was left unable to walk when admitted to Westwood. After leaving hospital she had practically given up on life. She wasn’t eating and was mentally and physically in a bad place. Her turnaround has been remarkable. The staff have encouraged her to eat and she is now much stronger. She is happy and comfortable within her new surroundings.

I could not ask for more. Thank you to everyone.

At Westwood, all the staff are really professional, caring and dedicated to making the resident's lives as easy, interesting and comfortable as possible. They all go the extra mile to make sure that everyone is looked after and that nothing is too much trouble even in difficult circumstances.
The food is well cooked and delicious with a varied choice.
The decor is a bit dated in the public areas and some of the rooms but they seem to be doing them up as and when possible.

I would definitely recommend Westwood to anyone looking for compassionate and caring staff.
