Abbeyfield Friars Mead Care Home is a warm, homely community in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, offering residential and respite care for older people. They support people to live with dignity, choice, and as much independence as possible, with 24-hour care tailored to individual needs, routines, and preferences. Friars Mead is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and is rated Good (February 2020).

Everyday living, comfortably arranged: the home has 26 bedrooms, each with an en-suite wet room. One room can accommodate a couple, so they are registered for up to 27 occupants. Room 26 is the designated respite room, supporting planned short stays and, where appropriate, recovery following hospital admission.
Food, companionship, and meaningful days: home-cooked meals are prepared on site, with choice at every mealtime and support as required. Activities and gentle daily engagement are available to suit interests and energy levels, encouraging confidence, connection, and enjoyment. Residents and guests can relax in communal and quieter areas, with supported access to the garden and outdoor spaces.

Respite care: from day one, they agree on what matters to you - goals for the stay, the support you need (mobility, medication arrangements, personal care), and how they will review this if needs change. Respite offers reassurance to families and carers through clear communication (with consent and in line with privacy expectations). Friars Mead is a care home without nursing; where nursing input is needed, support is planned with relevant community health professionals as part of assessment and ongoing review. If you would like to discuss a stay or arrange a visit, they will guide you through the process and what day-to-day support can look like.

Visiting

  • Visitors are welcome daily, including evenings, with flexible visiting to support family life and individual routines.
On arrival, visitors are asked to sign in, follow current infection prevention measures, and respect the privacy and dignity of all residents. If a resident is unwell, the team may suggest shorter visits or alternative arrangements to support recovery and protect others.

Children are welcome when supervised by an adult, and visits can take place in communal areas or the resident’s room, depending on preference and what is happening in the home at the time. Where a quieter environment is needed, the team will help identify a suitable space.
If a planned visit needs to change due to care needs, emergencies, or an outbreak control measure, the team will explain the reason and support alternative options wherever possible.

Parking

  • Parking for visitors is available on site, close to the home, subject to availability. A small number of spaces are typically used for short-stay visitor parking, so visitors may be asked to park considerately and avoid blocking driveways, access routes, or delivery areas.
Where onsite spaces are full, there is usually additional on-street parking nearby. Visitors are encouraged to allow a few extra minutes at busy times and to follow local signage and restrictions.
If a visitor requires step-free access or needs to be dropped off close to the entrance, this can be accommodated to support safe arrival and departure.

My Mum has been in Friars Mead for 5 months and I know that I made the right choice for her. Mum is totally blind and needed to feel safe in a smaller environment, so with only 25/26 rooms, Friars Mead seemed perfect for her. I have continued to be impressed with the high level of care and attention
that she has received. Settling Mum into the care home when she had previously been living independently was quite a challenge with her disability, but I can honestly say that the staff have been great in their dealings with her. In the early days when I needed something to make life easier for her nothing was ever too much trouble. There are lots of well-run activities. The food is excellent and I say this from first-hand experience having eaten there with Mum on a couple of occasions. I would have no hesitation in recommending this well-run care home to others looking to place their loved ones somewhere safe where they will be treated with the love and respect that they deserve.
Reply from Ricardo Da Silva Freitas, Manager at Abbeyfield Friars MeadDear Jane, we appreciate the kind words and your view and experience of our care home. I would truly want nothing more than to keep your Mum happy and safe for times to come. Thank you for your trust in us as Friars Mead.

One of the main reasons for choosing Friars Mead was that it seemed very friendly, and almost 'home away from home'. My mother has been at the home for 16 months now and those initial impressions were absolutely correct. The staff, in all departments, are excellent, and I have seen them treat residents
with a kind, calm and dignified manner without exception. They always know where my Mum is and how she is feeling whenever I visit. There have been a growing number of events and activities that are all very well planned and enjoyed by all. The food is tasty and menus varied. The management of the threat of covid was/is extremely impressive. I would have no hesitation in recommending Friars Mead.
Reply from Ricardo Da Silva Freitas, Registered Manager at Abbeyfield Friars MeadI would like to thank you Jeremy for taking the time to review and comment on our care home Friars Mead. We are always here to help and create a safe, enjoyable, home-from-home environment. Thank you!

My mother has been at Friars Mead for nearly 4 years now. Overall she has and remains to be happy there. My first impression when I initially went there was a feeling of friendliness and cleanliness. My previous experience of walking into other homes was the smell of stale urine and this was not the
case at Friars Mead! The staff are very caring there and I am happy knowing that my mother is being cared for at a good standard. There has been a change of management over the last few months, which like any organisation has had its issues. This has stabilised and some changes are starting to make a difference now to the day-to-day running. From my point of view, I would always recommend Friars Mead for value and the level of care.
Reply from Ricardo Da Silva Freitas, Registered Service Manager at Abbeyfield Friars MeadDear Simon, thank you for your kind words and support. We hope to keep striving to improve and make Friars Mead a care home where the residents are home and happy. Thank you.

Overall Experience 1.0 out of 5
Management communication with residents and staff is poor. Room standard was not to a good standard. Lighting not good enough for comfortable reading. In the bathroom, the WC would not flush properly and the washbasin was cracked. No hot water in the early mornings or evenings. No tables were provided
for meals. Only seating was two heavy chairs without reading lights and situated apart so that both residents could only see TV screens at 45 degree angles. TV and control did not function properly together. For the first few days, we did not have tables to eat off, just plates or trays on our knees. Hot food generally arrived lukewarm.
My wife had been told during our show round about three weeks before our stay that assistance would be available to bath. Assistance was not available until halfway through the week. The manager did not respond to the request (passed on by staff) for a meeting to discuss requests, until day five of the week (two days before we left). Toilet flush was repaired on day five. The manager did not appear to realise we had been requesting improvements. The staff were very pleasant and helpful at all times but did not appear to be acquainted with the details we had provided on forms given to us by the manager after our walk round about three weeks earlier.
I should add that I had come straight from Day Surgery at the Hospital. We had booked in for one week respite care. Friars Mead said I would need to quarantine - OK. We had requested separate rooms, expecting my wife could join the other residents for meals and social activities, which she did for the day I was in hospital. Instead, we were allocated a twin bedroom which had apparently not been used for some time. The facilities were not as described when we were shown round the home about three weeks before. The review, therefore, relates our experiences for respite care. It was very expensive for the facilities we actually experienced. Friars Mead was obviously not set up for respite care, with little thought to what was needed or checking that facilities were working properly.
Reply from Julie Hutchins, Manager at Abbeyfield Friars MeadSorry to hear that you have not had a positive experience with us, however even sadder that many of these issues were not addressed at the time. Clearly it was mis-understood what facilities and services we were providing. If we had been more aware of your concerns at the time they could have been quickly rectified or explained and I am sure your stay would have been a better experience as it is with other residents. Moving from one’s home into a care home can be a timely and emotional process - to fully settle it takes all parties time to adapt to new facilities, procedures and needs etc. One week respite care cannot paint the perfect picture of a full and normal service – especially when quarantine in a room is required. We have obviously addressed all the matters raised in your review directly with you both and I believe we have been fair in accepting some criticisms along with reducing your bill as a goodwill gesture. We continue to evaluate all feedback and work on our procedures and communication.

It has been an extremely unusual year with Covid. However, my father and all the residents were kept healthy and safe, which meant there were no losses due to the pandemic. Life was very difficult for my father as he often felt isolated, especially when confined to his bedroom, as he is a very social
person, but I understand the reasons for this. A pod was set up for visitors as soon as allowed, and it is great that he is allowed out and about again. Thank you to all the staff at Friars Mead for keeping him safe.
Reply from Julie Hutchins, Manager at Abbeyfield Friars MeadThank you, Maureen, for your feedback. The pandemic certainly hit everybody hard, but it has certainly been a difficult time for residents in a care home, and especially for their families. It means a lot to the staff at Friars Mead to know that their hard work is appreciated and that both residents and families are happy and safe.

Friars Mead is a very friendly and caring care home. Communications have always been excellent with the manager and all the staff. We have been happy with the policies and procedures during covid which has been very difficult for everyone but so please that the residents were kept safe, felt like an
extended family.

I cannot fault the facilities or staff at Friars Mead. My uncle was going through a very difficult time emotionally during his stay, however, the staff were caring and compassionate (even when he was being unpleasant).
The staff went above and beyond on numerous occasions. My uncle stated that Friars
Mead should be used as a benchmark for excellence in care homes. I and the rest of the family, agree with him. My uncle is doing incredibly well these days.

During the time my mother has been a resident, for nearly two years now, I have continually been impressed by the care she has received. As her needs have increased, the staff have responded with sensitivity, consulting with me as necessary to ensure she experiences the best quality of life in her older
age. She is encouraged to reach her full potential, at the same time being allowed to have control over whatever level of independence, or care, she feels she needs. Efforts are made to provide a range of stimulating activities for the residents, which must surely be a challenge! All the staff deserve a high commendation for their kindness and care. As a relative, I am always greeted with a friendly face and warmly welcomed. I have full confidence that my mother is in good hands at all times. Thank you.

Mum was so well looked after during her respite stay at Friars Mead. The staff are caring and attentive and even though mum was only there for 3 weeks respite I know it helped her to recover from her stay in hospital. Karoline and her staff were always so welcoming to mum's family and her visitors during

We are very lucky to have found a room at this Abbeyfield Care Home for the following reasons;
The staff work hand in hand to make it feel like 'home'.
It never smells unpleasant in any way which is difficult to achieve. The standard of hygiene is very high.
The staff are always smiling and cheerful.
They also have staff that have been there for over 15 years.
There are plenty of activities organised.
The level of personal care my mother gets is very high.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.741)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.741) out of 10 for Abbeyfield Friars Mead is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.841 for Abbeyfield Friars Mead is calculated as follows: ( (161 Excellents x 5) + (26 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 189 Ratings = 4.841
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Abbeyfield Friars Mead is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 27 registered maximum number of service users is 5.4, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
