The home was rated ‘outstanding’ by the CQC in November 2019, and its unique environment is tailored to residents’ interests. There’s everything from a pub and cinema, to a sweet shop and even a real farm, complete with a miniature pony, pigs, goats, chickens and more.

We feel very happy that our mum is in Broadwater Lodge; the staff are lovely, there are always activities to keep Mum entertained and there's never a dull moment. The grounds are lovely and there is even a mini farm! On occasions I think communication could be improved, but this is a minor point. Mum
is safe, very well looked after and is kept stimulated!

I have been at Broadwater Lodge for one month and I am very pleased with the care. The staff and carers are fantastic, I have been well looked after and am warm and well fed. I do not live with any cognitive impairment, but it has been a great help to reduce my stress living here whilst finding my new
flat.

A home-from-home feel to this care home. A great deal of care, time and thought to individuals is seen when visiting. Friendly, helpful and homely atmosphere and plenty of relevant activities for each resident. Clean, tidy and lovely setting. Mum is very happy and settled there.

Mum very quickly thought of Broadwater Lodge as her home despite never wanting to go into residential care. This was a great relief to all the family. Mum adores all the animals that visit and live there which also makes it very different from other places of care.

All staff are extremely helpful, friendly and very caring. Lots of activities for residents to join in with, all calender events ie: Halloween, Christmas etc. celebrated. Food very good. Overall, a lovely place for residents. Always called when there is a problem with my relative.

Broadwater Lodge is a friendly homely environment, my brother is very well looked after. The cleanliness of the place is first class. The staff are very friendly and efficient in their job. The staff are first class. The food is excellent and the whole ethos of the place is first class. My brother made
an improvement in the first two weeks there. Please praise all the staff for the way they look after the residents and treat the visitors. We always feel welcome. The residents are always happy and look well cared for. The food is very good and it is nice to see videos of the residents taking part in the activities. They are all treated with dignity.

My dear friend, I have known for 50years + and was devastated when she got Dementia -why? I can honestly say, I was so happy to see her happy and cared for in a wonderful place, showing ingenuity resourcefulness, genuine concern and above all happy. (The farm is just marvellous) Fantastic team.

Clothes do seem to get lost in the ward despite more labels though.

With regard to laundry, I do apologise for the issues your father has experienced. I would like to assure you we have looked into this and I’m pleased to say that since your review, we have put new measures in place to reduce the risk of clothes going missing. This includes ensuring that residents’ rooms are locked when unoccupied to avoid clothing being moved.
In addition we are considering the purchase of a new and more robust labelling machine for residents’ clothes. We have also recently employed a new laundry assistant, who has designed a new system or organising the laundry, which will reduce lost items. Thank you again for taking the time to provide your feedback and kind words, and of course please do contact the home manager or any other members of the senior team at the home if there is anything else we can help with now or in the future.

The most friendly, caring, welcoming care home one could wish for. Having worked in care work ourselves and having had a son with a learning disability, we are not without experience as both carers and providers. Broadwater Lodge left me reassured after my husband was moved from another home and enabled
me to recover from a breakdown and to make some important decisions. Thank you from both of us.

On arrival, you are greeted by a friendly staff member. All staff speak to you as you pass. The main lounges and corridors are all clean with various activities/displays appropriate for the residents. Residents are free to wander wherever they want within the home and its gardens which are also well
maintained. The care staff are happy to give updates on the resident's welfare/behaviour on asking. You are made to feel welcome and make yourselves tea/coffee etc whilst there. Although my mother caused trouble when she first arrived they are sorting out medication to help her.

My mother is 100, very frail and has Alzheimer's. Staff show great patience in attempting to keep her able to move. She is always clean and well-dressed. Staff do try hard to involve her and talk to her, though her deafness makes this difficult. I have great respect for their kindness, patience and
care while doing a difficult job.


There is a pleasant, lively atmosphere and a willingness to go the extra mile. I am grateful that Mum is looked after so well.

My father in law was quite happy to be in the home and thought that the staff were very friendly and caring. He rarely complained about his situation which to us meant he was being treated well.
We were very happy with the level of care he received and with the feedback that was regularly given to
us.
We were especially grateful to the staff on duty the night he died, as we believe they went above and beyond the call of duty to make him comfortable and ease his fears.
I would not hesitate to recommend Broadwater Lodge.

My mum has been at Broadwater Lodge for nearly a year now and given all the circumstances, I don't think she could be in a better place. I am so relieved she is living in a safe and secure environment, with friendly staff that really do care and will always go that extra mile when necessary. They keep
me updated on my mum's health issues and her doctor is excellent. I have no hesitation in recommending.

My mum went into Broadwater Lodge after being in hospital for 3 months. My dad has followed, so it is lovely for them to be together. Everyone at "B" is so lovely and friendly and so caring. Nothing is too much trouble and for family, it is very scary to have to put your parents into a home. It is like
a home from home and with caring people, you realise they are being cared for and attended to for all their needs. Right through from management down to cleaners, everyone is part of the team that places everything together and they do everything they can physically do to help their residents.

Angela

Angela Bookham

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 1994

Angela Bookham started work at Broadwater Lodge in 1994 as a care worker and, after a spell at our sister home Jubilee House, returned as manager in early 2012.


As a child, I always wanted to be a nurse, but my mother strictly forbade it and insisted that, like my sister, I would take secretarial training. However, it wasn’t long before I decided to pursue my true calling and, at the age of 16, became a carer at an orphanage. I went on to join Broadwater Lodge in 1994 as a care worker, but was quickly promoted through the ranks to team leader and on to deputy manager. After a spell at our sister home, Jubilee House which is a few miles away, I returned to Broadwater Lodge as manager in 2012.


I really love this job and the opportunities it gives me to make a positive difference to people’s lives. I always strive to put myself in the shoes of residents. More and more people are being diagnosed with dementia, so this is an enormous issue which many of us will face at some point in life. I passionately believe in giving people the level of care and attention I would like to receive if I were in their place.


I’m really proud of the atmosphere we have created at Broadwater Lodge – I’d describe it as a ‘home from home’ and that’s often the first thing people say when they walk through the door. Indeed, one family based in Bournemouth was so impressed by Broadwater Lodge that they chose us over other homes closer to where they live.


Every day is different here, and that’s down to the work of our three excellent activity coordinators. They do a great job working with the residents, understanding what they want to do and coming up with new and exciting ideas. One of the best was a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party which we held for the Jubilee. I was new at the time, but was tremendously impressed by the imagination and dedication everyone showed in putting it together. It’s moments like those that make Broadwater Lodge a very special place to be.


Angela celebrates 20 years of service
Broadwater Lodge’s very popular home manager Angela Bookham reached a very important milestone. She has been providing quality and expert care to her residents for 20 years.
