Whitegates is a leading not-for-profit care home in Hastings. One of the most established homes in the area, Whitegates was once a Tea House welcoming visitors and is now a 21-bed countryside residence offering person-centred residential and respite care in a warm, homely setting.

As part of Greensleeves Care, a leading UK care charity, Whitegates puts people before profit. Residents receive award-winning care starting with longer trial stays to ease the move into care, along with peace of mind provided by Greensleeves’ 'Home for Life' funding assurance, which ensures no resident is ever asked to leave if funds run out.

Located in rural Westfield near Hastings and Rye, and surrounded by extensive grounds, the home offers peaceful countryside living. The 21 spacious, fully furnished bedrooms feature ensuite wet rooms, with a small number of larger twin rooms for couples or companions wishing to live together. Residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms with photos, ornaments, and small furniture to create comfort and familiarity.

A daily programme of activities and social events helps residents stay active and engaged, whether trying new pursuits or continuing familiar hobbies. Both indoor and outdoor options promote wellbeing and nurture friendships over shared interests.

Mealtimes are central to life at Whitegates. In-house chefs cater to individual tastes and dietary needs, while summer barbeques and al fresco dining on the sun-filled patio add variety and enjoyment.

The long-standing care team brings years of experience and a strong community spirit. Alongside the experienced the Family Liaison Manager, the team is always available to answer questions, provide guidance, and welcome visitors. Families are encouraged to contact Whitegates for advice or to arrange a visit, with the team ready to support them every step of the way.

My mother was resident at Whitegates from 2017 until she died there on 8th April. I wanted to say how completely marvellous all the staff were with my mother who was a reluctant resident. During the last four weeks of her life, when she was returned from hospital with an undiagnosed fracture, they were
so kind and caring and I would include every member of the homes community. They were also caring towards my brother and myself and made a difficult situation easier to bear. The accommodation at Whitegates was so good as well as was Mum's food and the endless cups of tea willingly provided to us when we visited.
The home is cheery; there is a wonderful entertainments team. All in all, really, ten out of ten.

My mother was a resident of Whitegates for the past three years but recently died. I wish to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the management and staff at Whitegates for all the care, sympathy and sheer professionalism they exhibited - especially during my mothers final weeks. Whitegates is well
managed and one has the impression that quality of care is given priority over any profit motive. The layout and rooms are of high quality and the standard of equipment is generally sound. I have nothing but respect for the outstanding staff who demonstrated their value over and over again. My mother did not like being institutionalized and, with her dementia worsening, would often make this clear to all. She was however still treated with absolute understanding, kindness and good humour. I am so grateful.

My mother was in Whitegates Care Home for approximately one and a half years at the age of 93-94, with early stages of dementia. After a short respite stay she agreed to move into a very nice, sunny room with French doors onto the garden. She enjoyed the daily activities, from flower arranging to bingo,
plus visits by local children and friendly pets, and outings to local places of interest. The atmosphere is of a country hotel, helped by the scale of the place - 21 rooms, and the friendly, helpful staff and carers who look after the residents as though they are in their own home. Thank you to you all.

The staff at Whitegates have been very caring and helped my mother settle after a difficult time having two brain operations and losing her husband. It was a very upsetting time. But they persevered and were very patient and now she is very happy and settled. It's such a welcoming place, the whole family,
including her great-grandchildren, enjoy visiting. We can't thank them enough.

My mother was wonderfully happy at Whitegates for her final years. All the staff were so attentive and friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. There were plenty of activities that kept her busy, even if she didn't feel inclined to join in due to lack of vision, she still enjoyed listening
to the goings-on around her. My mother always enjoyed her food and the meals were varied and always very tasty. The daily glass of sherry was always very welcome.
For anyone trying to decide about a care home, I would encourage them to visit Whitegates to see what they think. My initial one was that it is more like a country hotel with a friendly environment and, I have to say, my views did not change. A wonderful place.

My aunt's association with Whitegates goes back 10 years. During that time she received care of the highest quality from a loving and dedicated staff. There was always a warm welcome and a ready cup of tea for myself when I visited. Both her rooms were attractive, light, cheerful and pleasantly furnished.

This is my second visit. Last summer I had an emergency operation to deal with a twisted bowel and was lucky to survive! After several months in hospital, I wanted a 'bridge' between that environment and home and spent three weeks here.
It was ideal for this purpose. The setting was more like a small
country house hotel and the staff were superb. I was very nervous about managing the stoma bag and my time here gave me much greater confidence.
After a second operation to remove the bag, I had no hesitation in coming back and I remain very happy with the service provided.

I am so grateful to the staff and management of Whitegates for the way they looked after my mum, they were so friendly, sincere and attentive, she enjoyed wonderful food and peace and quiet and looked so much better when we collected her.

This stay has given her an idea of what it is like to be in

a retiremenet home and she informs me that she would be happy to return any time as it is so 'homely there'. My thanks to you all.

Everything about Whitegates is beautiful. The residents have a quality experience and I believe this to be reflected in the fees. Uncle is an extremely difficult man and has found fault throughout his life, although even he has trouble finding fault here. Relatives are always included in activities
should they want to be. There is a very positive ambience when entering the premises which is continued through to the individual rooms and the caring staff.

Dad went to stay at Whitegates Retirement Home when my sister and I were both on holiday. The care he received was 5-star. The staff were wonderful, the rooms comfortable and he really enjoyed the food and the entertainment. One of the things I really noticed was that the staff took time to interact
with the residents and seemed to be genuinely interested and caring. While dad was at Whitegates Retirement Home, he became very poorly and was admitted to hospital. Upon discharge, he returned to the home to convalesce for 10 days and we visited daily. We felt he was incredibly well cared for and all his needs met.

She has been really well looked after, she has eaten well, looks amazing, is calm, but also has been occupied every day.
Dad has been to visit on many occasions and joins mum for lunch, and he has been made very welcome.
We have really felt mum

I was very happy to leave my mother in the care of Whitegates Retirement Home knowing that she would be safe and well looked after for a very busy period in our lives. The staff are very caring, friendly and considerate. In general, the care home is very homely in so much as it does not overwhelm you
with a feeling of being too clinical. All the patients seem to be very happy to be here. The home itself is very relaxing and situated in a lovely environment.

Current Review Score: 9.0 (9.017)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (9.017) out of 10 for Whitegates is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.809 for Whitegates is calculated as follows: ( (38 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 47 Ratings = 4.809
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.208 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Whitegates is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 24 registered maximum number of service users is 4.8. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 4.8 = 0.833
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
