Sharnbrook House

from H T (Daughter of Resident) published on 19 September 2025
Submitted via Website • Report
Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My father has recently moved to Sharnbrook House from another care home, and sadly I also have experience of yet another care home in the area since my mother was cared for with dementia before she died. Whilst it is early days, I asked to post a review since I am so pleased with how my dad is doing
since moving. He has received excellent medical and nursing attention through the interventions of the Sharnbrook House senior team, who have carried out dedicated care to improve his general health and multiple ailments. With significant improvement in his health, he is slowly putting on some weight due to a better diet and great atmosphere in the dining room, and is generally cleaner and well-groomed. He is in the early stages of dementia, making him irascible to say the least at times, but I have witnessed the staff being gentle, kind, and caring with him at all times, and usually with an injection of humour!
Reply from Ali Hrisca, Home Manager at Sharnbrook House

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
I am very impressed with Tickford Abbey in many ways. I have experienced care homes in the past, but Tickford Abbey is more than a care home. I've never seen so many activities, all very well organised and so varied. Dad is always busy doing something, where as before he was bored and lonely. It has
brought him back to life in so many ways. The staff interaction is also appreciated as dad really enjoys this. He has become sociable again. It is also a relief to see him eating well again. The meals are so good, I often joke with him that he's in a 5* hotel. A huge thanks to the staff of Tickford Abbey as it is the people who make a care home and you are all appreciated. Not only do you take care of dad well, but your support for the family also helps on this difficult journey for everyone. Thank you!

Kingston House

Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5
My mum has, within 2 weeks of being here settled in really well. The staff have been so attentive and kind and kept her busy.
They have thought about who she may get on with and sat her near them at meal times. They have made sure she has been kept busy doing quizzes, knit and natter, has been out
in the mini bus for a coffee and much more.
We can visit any time and have very quickly been made to feel part of the family.
We had a very useful meeting with the manager and visiting doctor after a week or 2, that helped iron out small details to help my mum settle better and put our mind at rest how she is when we are not there.
She has got her smile back and we can relax as she is in safe, caring hands.
Reply from Elizabeth Clark, Home Manager at Kingston House

My mum went to Rose Cottage after being discharged from hospital on a palliative care plan. The care at the home was so good that mum lived there for just over 2 years. Throughout this time mum was looked after with great care, even though at times she could be very tricky and quite a forceful character.
The staff always treated her with compassion and dignity, always engaging with both her and myself. I can't thank all the staff enough for the care they gave my mum, especially towards the end when she became very poorly. During this sad period, the couple of days I spent with my mum were made more bearable by the staff allowing me to be with her at all times, nothing was too much trouble for them. I cherish the 2 extra years I had with my mum due to the wonderful care all staff at Rose Cottage gave her, I will especially remember sitting by the pond with mum having a cup of team and cake.

Over all Kingston House is a very welcoming friendly atmosphere, with lots of smiles. Lovely to see such a range of activities going on within the home. You can see all the departments with in the home doing what's best for the all the residents. There are at times concerns, which do get dealt with.
Communication between home and family there is room for improvement.

My contact with Lavender Fields has been for the past 3 years. In the past 2 years there has been several temp managers. I have seen several members of staff arrive and depart during this period. 3 months ago a new manager was appointed. It now appears that a period of stability has commenced which
is reassuring especially with the closure of a home nearby. I would like to thank all of the staff at the home who always have been so kind and considerate for my relative despite the changes and challenges it is really appreciated. I just hope that the senior management recognise and support their fantastic staff.

Good, communication was not very good but is improving. Because husband cannot work often left on his own in dining room. Think sometimes he should be first dealt with, as because of his dementia (Lewy body) he imagines all sorts of things like being attacked. Also lastly is talking about standing up
because he has waited long time this is dangerous as he would fall, behind the dementia he is intelligent man and will ultimately try to do it one day.

Since my recent appointment as manager for Kingston House I have made this a priority, so it's great to hear it's proving effective. To offer some reassurance around mealtime transitions, the team regularly risk assesses the needs of all to ensure their safety at these key points in the day. I am pleased you and I have a meeting in the diary to discuss your concerns and I look forward to resolving these for you.

On discharge from hospital after a major operation, I had ten days convalescence respite at Kingston House. Without exception all the staff were kind, caring and respectful, not only to me but to all the residents they dealt with. I felt that nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The food was
brilliant- good home cooked food every day. There was a choice of food at every meal and even extra snacks and drinks were available. Special food requests were met if at all possible. My room was good and one or two initial omissions were very soon put right. I would thoroughly recommend Kingstone House.

My mother has been in Lavender Fields for nearly five years and we have not had any complaints about her care. The staff on her floor have all been caring to her and friendly with us. There seems to have been a lot of problems in setting a permanent head of the home but hopefully the latest will be
good. There have also been some problems with paying the bills but they seem to be satisfactory now.

The Orchards

My father lived at the Orchards for nearly 3 years. He was very well looked after, both medically and socially. On a couple of occasions when he was acutely ill staff dealt with it promptly and our family was keep well informed.
All the staff were lovely and there was a good staffing level. The activities
team were great and included him as often as possible even when he was in a wheelchair. The rooms were spacious and clean, and the food was good, with regular snacks and drinks as well as the meals. Visitors were always welcome and often offered tea and cakes.
During his final illness he was cared for with compassion and the family were allowed to stay with him day and night. They provided a care basket with necessities such as toothbrush, toothpaste and toiletries for us when we stayed unexpectedly.
Staff really took the trouble to get to know him and individualise his care.
As a retired GP I have extensive experience of care homes in East Anglia and this must be one of the best
Reply from Elaine Cole, General Home Manager at The Orchards

Thank you so much for sharing such a heartfelt and thoughtful reflection on your father's time at The Orchards. We are truly honoured to have been entrusted with his care over the past three years, and it means a great deal to know that both he and your family felt supported and respected.Your kind words about the attentiveness of our staff, and the efforts of our activities team are deeply appreciated. We are especially touched by your recognition of the compassion shown during his final days and the small gestures-like the care basket-that helped make a difficult time more bearable. It's always our aim to provide not just professional care, but a sense of comfort, dignity, and personal connection.

I have visited many care homes over the years (in a professional capacity) and I can honestly say that Arden House is one of the very best. It is spotlessly clean, well staffed and well managed. Food, activities and medical supervision are all of a high standard. I have no worries at all about the level
of care my mum in receiving.

My cousin was extremely well cared for in the time that she was a resident. I live in Australia and only saw her a couple of times, but when I phoned, they always were able to bring her to the phone. Problem in having a response from the manager at the time, but the workers were excellent.

My 1st time used respite care, I really like the care plan arrange. I would recommend anyone who is thinking of using respite care package, you should do it, because it gave you the opportunity to rest a bit from looking after your love one for a long time. You still can visit your love one at the care
home at anytime. I would do it again, if I need a break.

Having chosen this home above all others 3 years ago for my beloved mum when she was no longer safe to live in her own home due to Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, I continue to rate Speirs House as excellent. All the stuff that actually really matters, they absolutely excel at. The care, the professionalism,
the efforts to provide a sense of home for each of their residents, the respect and the consideration for complex human needs - the list goes on. I've experienced nothing but kindness, and creative solutions to help with mum's unpredictable ups and downs. They love her, and for that, I love them. Genuinely top down, really well supported person centred care - the staff are happy and constant, and this translates to a lovely environment for mum to have the best quality of life that she can have. Excellent manager, excellent staff, excellent building and grounds.
