My 1st time used respite care, I really like the care plan arrange. I would recommend anyone who is thinking of using respite care package, you should do it, because it gave you the opportunity to rest a bit from looking after your love one for a long time. You still can visit your love one at the care
home at anytime. I would do it again, if I need a break.

Having chosen this home above all others 3 years ago for my beloved mum when she was no longer safe to live in her own home due to Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, I continue to rate Speirs House as excellent. All the stuff that actually really matters, they absolutely excel at. The care, the professionalism,
the efforts to provide a sense of home for each of their residents, the respect and the consideration for complex human needs - the list goes on. I've experienced nothing but kindness, and creative solutions to help with mum's unpredictable ups and downs. They love her, and for that, I love them. Genuinely top down, really well supported person centred care - the staff are happy and constant, and this translates to a lovely environment for mum to have the best quality of life that she can have. Excellent manager, excellent staff, excellent building and grounds.

Torkington House
Looked after my late mother for 15 Months, in time my had dementia and was slowly declining. The team looked after my Mum 24/7.
It was nice when I closed the door I knew she was safe and well cared for. They dressed here and kept her appearance and hair just as she went into home
a very smart Lady.
Above the care for my mother , they were also looking after me, Teas coffee biscuits and the odd cheeky bowl of chips.

Garden parties, trips to park and theatre where
All part of months plan, which you received by email every weekly.

Most of all, the care team where kind gentle
And always there to help, you couldn't ask for much more.

My final email to the management at Torkington says it all -

Dear Manager,

Thanks for your condolences. However, I particularly wanted to drop you a personal note to express my thanks and gratitude for the care that you and your Team have given my wife over the past five years. There are many

care homes to choose from but we were fortunate to find Torkington. The standard of care my wife received has been exemplary and the staff have shown themselves to be compassionate and genuinely concerned for the welfare of the residents in their charge. Hard though it has been to be separated from my wife these past years she could not have been in better hands.

Lastly, I have to say a special thanks to all the staff who cared for my wife (and me!) last week. Their support made my wife's last days as easy as possible and I was touched by their genuine affection for my wife.

Thanks again and my best wishes to you and your staff.

Best,

Reply from Esperanza Guidaven, Deputy Manager at Torkington House

Thank you so much for your heartfelt message as it means a lot to all of us here at Torkington. We will share this to the whole team. We are truly honoured to have had the opportunity to care for your wife over the past five years and it is rewarding to hear that our efforts brought you comfort knowing that she is in good hands. Our team always strives to provide not only professional care but also genuine compassion. It was a privilege to support your wife in her final days, and to be there for you as well during this difficult time. Your recognition of the staff's dedication and affection is a reminder of why we do what we do. Please accept our sincere condolences once again, and our best wishes for peace and healing in the days ahead.

My uncle came into Speirs House initially as a respite patient. Manager saw his needs to be admitted here as his condition was not favourable. He had a bed sore which was quite deep and staff at Speirs House did a sterling job of making sure it healed completely. He was taken outside in his chair for
some fresh air and he seemed a lot brighter and happier. His health was improving tremendously as all the staff at Speirs did their level best to give my uncle a good and respectful quality of life. They exercise their duty of care to the utmost. As a family, we are ever so grateful.

My partner has now been a Resident of Speirs House for nearly 2 and a half years. My partner took a little while to settle in a normal occurrence but now regards Speirs House as her home.
I visit regularly so I can see that the standard of care, facilities, cleanliness, activities etc remain at a high
standard.
The meetings of the Relatives Committee enable the Manager to communicate to us the regular, incremental improvements which are taking place.
I believe that my partner is well cared for in a safe and friendly environment.

Speirs House has excellent management which is shown by the cheerful staff, this is conveyed to the residents and creates a lovely warm atmosphere as soon as you entre the building. The facilities are very good but if not required her room is very comfortable with a nice outlook. Unfortunately my wife
cannot wash and dress herself but she is always fresh and smart when I visit. I enjoy being able to have lunch with her in the dining room annex. We had some use of the TV room to celebrate her 91st Birthday with 17 relatives. SH looks after my wife better than I could.

My mother stayed at Torkington House for a fortnight while work was being done on her house. Although her Alzheimer's meant she herself has no recollection of her time there, my brother and I were very happy with how content she seemed when we visited and when she came home. We were free to visit at
any time and the staff were always welcoming. They were cheerful and friendly but also clearly take their work very seriously and professionally. We will certainly use Torkington House again if/when the occasion arises.

Reply from Esperanza Guidaven, Deputy Manager at Torkington House

Thank you so much for your message. It really does mean a lot to us. We know that it was not an easy decision but we are so pleased to hear that your mum seemed content while she was here, and that you and your brother felt welcome when you visited. The team always tries to make Torkington House a warm, friendly place, so it's lovely to know that came across. We would be more than happy to look after your mum again if you ever need us in the future.

from Mark w (Son of Resident) published on 6 May 2025

The team at Torkington are very professional and engage with the residents at any opportunity, even if it's just to say hello. Things are done at the residents pace there is no pressure only encouragement. The environment is clean and well-kept and continually inspected for any issues that need rectifying.
Medical issues are dealt with swiftly, where I may have hesitated; they would be seeking medical advice and instigating remedial steps, and by catching things quickly avoid causing unnecessary distress. The activities are well planned and varied so that residents with differing abilities can participate. The activities manager is very proactive (and could give the Duracell bunny a run for the money), encouraging creative and practical session content. The use of technology to monitor residents, is impressive and reassuring, guaranteeing assistance will be there if needed.
I have witnessed such a marked improvement in my mother's overall wellbeing since being at Torkinton.

Thank you so much for your message and we appreciate you taking the time to share this - it really means a lot to all of us here. We are happy to see that there is a continues improvement in your mum's overall wellbeing since she's been with us. At the start there was a bit of uncertainty whether she will settle and will like the home but with your constant support and feedback, we slowly introduce the changes with her for her best interest. We do our best to keep things relaxed and at everyone's own pace, so it's great to know that's how it feels. And you're right about our activities coordinator - she is full of energy and always coming up with new ideas to meet the different care needs of the residents. I will make sure to pass your lovely feedback on to the team. Thank you again for your kind words.
