My mother-in-law moved here in 2013 aged 103. Her care etc was just outstanding and she lived here up to October 2016, passing away aged 105. Due to the excellent care and due to health reasons, I had no hesitation in residing here myself and have been here since 1 May 2017 permanently.

I visited Romans initially on my own and was very pleased with what I viewed, so took my mother back for a viewing. We were greeted warmly and all the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. My mother has been at Roman's now for 6 weeks and loves it here. She has a much better quality of life
now as she has made lots of friends already and has settled really well, which makes me very happy to know she is being cared for so well. I would definitely recommend Romans for anyone looking for a placement for a loved one.

Very caring staff. Nice room with space. The staff spend time chatting to my Mum. A good hairdresser visits. Could be a few more activities for the more able residents.
Reply from V.Farmer, Registered Manager. at Romans Care HomeThank you for reviewing our home and posting your comments. We have so many activities that there is something every morning and nearly every afternoon except at weekends when this is predominantly at families request. Each resident receives an activities calendar at the beginning of every month listing the activities that will be provided including paid entertainment and visits to the local cafe.We are always happy to provide a copy for families via email if required. Updates can also be found on the dining room door and events and outings are always discussed at our every other month Residents and Family Meetings. We would welcome any suggestions that you would like to make.

Father originally stayed at Romans Care Home for respite care in July 2014 after an operation. He returned in November 2015 for permanent care following failing health and another stroke. Romans Care Home is a lovely home from home and it feels like it once you enter the house with its warm and friendly
atmosphere. The large lounge dining room and conservatory areas are bright and welcoming and the house is surrounded by beautiful gardens on all sides. The staff team are wonderful, carrying out at times demanding and difficult tasks with professional care and kindness.
Management keep in touch with us whenever any issues arise regarding father's health and care and we are always informed of any GP visits or other professional fathers needs, at times, can be many but we know he is well cared for by a great team of staff and for that we are very grateful.

Mum has been well looked after since moving to the Romans last year following a lengthy stay in hospital. She has moved from ground to second floor where it is much quieter. Although she had developed a mild fear of lifts (having been stuck in one a few yeas ago), this has not prevented her using the
lift to get down to the lounge/dining area which is great. The staff are always friendly when I visit and seem genuinely caring towards the residents. The care home is very clean and mum's room is cleaned regularly. As mum is quite disabled and has mobility issues she relies on staff to help her get ready in the mornings, although they do encourage her to do as much as he can for herself. If the doctor needs calling they are on to it straight away. I have scored 'food & drink' good, as there have been occasions where the family has observed meals that were not so good e.g prawn cocktail without any salad and other times where it has been excellent e.g. last Sunday's roast!

I have been impressed with the level of care on my visits to Romans. I have always been made to feel very welcome.
I have always found the staff to be helpful, friendly and very professional.
The high standard of communication is very important to me because I do not live nearby and rely on the
staff to keep me updated.
All standards of care at Romans is of the highest levels in all areas.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.549)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.549) out of 10 for Romans Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.649 for Romans Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (128 Excellents x 5) + (54 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 188 Ratings = 4.649
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Romans Care Home is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 registered maximum number of service users is 6, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 2018

I started working in care at 16 years old. I left for three years and returned as a Carer, then progressed as a Senior Carer, then a Care-Co-ordinator and then a Deputy at our sister home in Worthing. I moved to Romans in March 2018 as a Deputy and took on the role of Manager in December 2020.

I hold a Diploma in End of Life Care, and Level 5 in Management. I am most proud of the family community we have established at Romans. At the weekend I like to read, cross stitch and go for a peaceful coffee.

I have a Level 3 qualification, and I'm working towards a Level 5. My proudest achievements at work have been learning new aspects of managing a care home, and I enjoy looking after people and ensuring their needs are met. Outside of work I enjoy going to the gym, spending time with my grandchildren and watching horror films.

I have over 10 years of experience in care and have achieved both a Diploma Level 2 and Level 3 in Health and Social Care. I am also a TAQA Qualified Assessor.

Throughout my experience in care roles, I have undertaken many different qualifications and I am particularly interested in Dementia care. I participated in a course in London called Ladder To The Moon which was a person-centred learning course specifically about activities that can be carried out with individuals in the care home. This has been very beneficial to me in my job role. Whilst I am not at work, I like to go out walking and spending time with my family and friends.
