The Limes Retirement Home is a privately-owned care home that is ideal for a wide range of care needs, including dementia care and palliative care.

The Limes is in the small village of Mellis, close to the Norfolk Suffolk border. The sleepy village and the home is surrounded by lush green common land. The home has a large, well maintained garden with flower beds, seating areas and animals, such as chickens, for the residents to enjoy.

The 18th century house has been modernised throughout including new extensions and outdoor cottages and expresses a homely, warm and welcoming feel. The home offers a large and airy lounge with a separate dining room. The on-site kitchen provides fresh meals throughout the day which are prepared by fully trained kitchen staff. Dietary requirements are happily met if needed.

The home also has a fully equipped hairdressing salon where a hairdresser attends regularly. A range of entertainment is also provided and residents are encouraged to engage in hobbies.

The accommodation consists of 26 single en-suite rooms which are all tastefully decorated. All rooms come fully furnished although residents are encouraged to bring their own possessions to make the rooms feel like home. All rooms have a phone line and TV point installed. The Limes also offer six cottages that have their own bedrooms, shower rooms, living area and kitchen area. These are suited to independent individuals who would prefer supported living. Care packages are also available on these cottages.

Workers are trained in many complex needs and take pride in a compassionate service, with residents feeling involved in decision-making and able to pursue numerous activities and personal interests. Staff are available 24 hours a day to assist the residents. Quality assurance and firm recruitment processes are in place to ensure the team continues to meet high standards.

The Limes is located in a country setting and has adequate parking and a lovely, well cared for garden. It has a very low turnover of staff, which in itself says a lot. During Covid-19, the staff and managers have operated Covid secure practices and have managed to stay free of the virus. It is a warm,
friendly care home that looks after my relative extremely well.
Reply from Kathy Beckford, Manager at The Limes Retirement HomeThank you for your review and kind words, it has been a difficult time but everyone has pulled together and managed to keep the residents safe and happy, I am lucky to have such a great team.

If only we had known about The Limes when my mother-in-law needed 24hr care. The staff are friendly and caring. Many of them have worked at The Limes for years. The residents are very well looked after and treated as individuals. We really can't fault any aspect of my mothers care. Thank you to all
the staff at The Limes.

My husband moved into The Limes Retirement Home in August after his Alzheimers began to deteriorate rapidly. He was made very welcome, his needs and preferences were soon learned by the staff, and he has settled in well. The staff quickly become known to me, and I am always greeted warmly on my almost
daily visit. My husband enjoys many of the activities, especially visiting musicians and minibus trips. I feel he is safe and well-cared, for and that he has benefitted from the buzz of the people around him, so there has been an improvement in his spirit. He enjoys his visitors and usually has something to talk about.

My father moved into The Limes 2 months ago and settled in very quickly. He clearly enjoys and benefits from the friendly, homely atmosphere, and the activities provide welcome variety and stimulation. It has been a joy to see Dad engrossed in arts and crafts and armchair Zumba. He is enthusiastic about
the minibus trips and entertainment, especially when it involves music. In recent years, Alzheimer’s has affected Dad’s characteristic sense of humour, but we have been delighted to notice this returning at The Limes. Gardening has always played a major role in Dad’s life so the garden here is a big plus and it is lovely that he can stroll around it whenever he wishes. The environment feels relaxed but safe, and the staff treat the residents with kindness and dignity. Dad has a lovely bright room and enjoys the company of others in the spacious lounge. He clearly looks forward to the home-cooked meals with pleasure. We are most grateful to the manager and staff for all they do!

Having looked at 5-6 care homes in the area that would be suitable for my 90-year-old mother, who has Alzheimer's, my husband and I decided that The Limes was the best home we had seen. It is a clean and friendly environment offering weekly entertainment and activities for the residents. The garden
is lovely, and the mini-bus offering frequent trips out is a real bonus, enjoyed by my mother as her mind does not allow her to concentrate on the other activities she used to enjoy. The staff are very caring and helpful. Communication is excellent, with any issues being quickly addressed. My mother has presented some challenges, but these have been resolved and, since moving to The Limes at the end of May, she is now settled and happy. She is certainly well looked after. This gives me peace of mind, for which I thank the manager and her team.

I have always found the management and care workers at The Limes approachable, conscientious, caring and efficient. My mother is treated with dignity and kindness. The staff contact our doctors' surgery whenever my mother's health raises concerns. The activities provided for the residents are varied,
encouraging fitness, mental stimulation, group participation. It was heartening for me to see my mother joining in with craft making and getting satisfaction from doing so.
I find The Limes a happy community and being able to visit my mother at any time is comforting. Refreshments are offered to visitors at the same time as the residents, enhancing the feeling of homeliness. The decision to place my mother in a residential home was extremely difficult, but her deteriorating health deemed it necessary; the care given by The Limes' staff is of such high order that I am confident she could not be in a better place.

My mum has been in The Limes for a few months and is very happy and settled which makes it much easier for her family.
The staff are so good with mum, she's 93 years old but the care they give her is so good, nothing too much trouble.

The Limes Retirement Home is a very friendly place for my Dad to be cared for. He is happy and content and enjoys the homely environment, especially the meal times when all food is cooked fresh on the premises. I would certainly recommend this home to anyone with a loved one who needs 24-hour care.

Nice home with friendly and caring staff.
New lounge has made a noticeable difference giving a larger, brighter, more spacious area for residents to relax.
My Mother finds the meals very much to her liking and enjoys the entertainment.
Her room whilst slightly dated is ideal as she feels more relaxed
and at home in this type of environment. She has previously been in a more modern Care home and found that rather cold and less welcoming.

I have been very pleased with the care that my father has received at The Limes during the time he has been there.
There is a good ambience, the staff are all very friendly and the management is good.
I do think there could be more combined activities for the residents such as playing cards or board
games which would stimulate them especially now there is more space following the extension of the lounge.
All in all, I have few complaints about the care home and would recommend it to anyone else.

My mother has been a resident at The Lines for approximately four years. She has dementia and is 94 and unable to write a review. The staff are lovely. They are patient, kind, caring I compassionate and hard working. The physical environment is very pleasant when my mother needed to move to a larger
ground floor room because her physical health level deteriorated a room was found very quickly. Following a long stay in hospital, she has received help from the staff sufficiently to walk again with their help.

My father moved into The Limes two weeks after the death of my mother. It was a huge change for him but the staff were so kind and welcoming and he very soon felt at home. They have bent over backwards to help him feel happy. What we particularly like is the way the staff make us, his family, feel so
welcome too - always offering to make us cups of tea and making us feel involved in his care. We are over the moon at the service he receives and wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Limes to anyone.

We had the difficult decision to find a suitable home for dad in 2012 after he broke his hip and was left unable to walk and, was then diagnosed with dementia. We chose The Limes Retirement Home and I feel this was the right place for him. The staff were welcoming and friendly from the start. They have
made dads stay there as enjoyable as it could be and have shown him genuine affection. They are always helpful and try to deal with any concerns and requests promptly and professionally.
The home itself is not a modern building but is clean, tidy, well decorated and maintained.
Dads health has unfortunately deteriorated significantly recently but the staff do their best to make our visits as relaxed and easy as possible.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.495)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.495) out of 10 for The Limes Retirement Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 11 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.720 for The Limes Retirement Home is calculated as follows: ( (102 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 132 Ratings = 4.72
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.775 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Limes Retirement Home is based on 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 = 3.775
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 26 registered maximum number of service users is 5.2, which has been reached with 11 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
