Since being at Norwood House last November 2022, my mother has settled down very well. We were asked to find my mum somewhere else from her last care home, as they couldn’t cope with her violent outbursts! Since being at Norwood, she has not had any violent outbursts, she has had a few confused and
upsetting episodes but these have been dealt with, with care and humility. She is very happy there and all the staff from the care staff, cleaners, cooks and everybody else are absolutely fantastic and treat my mum with care and compassion all day, every day. We as a family feel so lucky to have found this wonderful home for Mum after having not a very good experience with the last home. Mum settled in quickly with help from the staff and has made some new friends. We are always kept in the loop when anything needs discussing and the manager's door is always open if we have any concerns. Mum's dementia/Alzheimer’s is dealt with with great compassion and care. Thank you all.

Mum has been in the home for the past eighteen months. During that time, I have been extremely impressed with the care that has been given. Although Mum can be a difficult resident, this has not in any way affected the care she receives, which is always polite, respectful and thoughtful! The facilities
are excellent and the home is maintained to a very high standard. I cannot praise the staff highly enough for all they have done and continue to do.

I visited my sister on Wednesday 22nd November 2017 in Norwood House.
I met the general manager and many of the staff, all of whom were friendly and helpful. My sister was in good form and seemed happy and relaxed. The home was clean and what I saw of the food residents had was well presented and excellent.
The staff were very attentive to residents during the lunchtime. My sister's room is big, bright with views and access to well kept gardens.
I am happy with the care she is getting in Norwood House.

I am frankly amazed at the patience and empathy shown by staff to all the residents despite some challenging behaviour patterns. I have never seen a resident treated with anything less than the utmost respect. There are always new initiatives to keep residents engaged and active. The food is always
of a high standard and the themed days are a treat and keep residents in touch with the passing seasons. I was impressed with some of the innovations recently introduced - especially the highly detail individual care plan drawn up for my mother and shared with me (although, as a former educator, I am aware that, sometimes, important points can be lost in a mass of detail).
I have always been welcomed when I visit and the staff always make special provision when my mother receives visits from her great grandchildren - and they never seem to mind the mess they leave behind them! A very welcoming environment.

This is our Mother's third care home due to us moving to Suffolk. We feel that this is the best home that she has been in, she is very content, they have varied amount of activities which my mother is able to join in. This is the first home where the activity staff have not been involved in the care
of residents as well as providing activities. Our main criticism would be around communication with relatives one example would be updating relatives with changes or outcomes after a doctors visit. We feel this is improving but needs more improvement. Issues raised in the last CQC report highlighted some areas of concern such as care plans and record keeping which we agreed with.
The newly appointed manager has implemented changes which included more staff, changes to routines, open coffee morning for relatives, where issues can be raised and a monthly newsletter with dates for activities and social events.
Overall we feel happy about out Mother's care.

My concerns are.
1. We have lost a lot of good staff recently. As this is my mums home I like to feel like family are looking after her. With the high turnover of staff, they don't seem to know the individual residents likes and dislikes.
2. I don't like to see staff standing around chatting to each
other.
I would rather see staff sitting with the residents and talking to them, a little chat makes their day.
3. The food is always very nice, but I know my mum would rather have the old fashioned food.
When my mum first came to Norwood House we filled out a form with all her likes and dislikes, but that doesn't seem to of been taken notice of. Why ask us to fill in the form if you are not going to take notice.
Also, I have noticed she and several others always pull the skin off the potatoes, so why not peel them.

I do feel happy about my mum being at Norwood House, just a few small things I feel could be improved to help make the home even better.

Reply from Gareth Nixon-Moss, Director at Norwood HouseIt is always disappointing to hear of concerns, however, "small" they may be, especially if they are raised for the first time via Social media sites. We have an open door policy, managers on duty every day and wish to support all our residents, guests and their families. We do not recognise any "good" staff that may have left. We place staff training very high and expect them all to meet our standards - some do some do not. We also carry out regular satisfaction surveys and tailor our services including our restaurant/meals to take account of our residents' requests. We have taken onboard the comments regarding potatoes and will address any individual needs.

Always happy and welcoming environment. My aunt is extremely content at Norwood. The care and food are excellent. There is real love and joy between staff and residents even when some can be difficult. Only issues I find are that my aunt's hair at times looks as if it needs a bit of TLC but I know there
have been problems with that, and the fact that she has dementia means that even if I ask for some specific help for her she usually denies she needs it when asked which makes it very difficult for the staff.
Reply from Gareth Nixon-Moss, Director at Norwood HouseWe are all pleased the hard work from the staff is recognised. As those involved with Dementia will know, it is the skill of the staff to encourage those in our care to participate in those everyday tasks which we would otherwise take for granted.

From my experience of my relative being at Norwood House for the last 18 months, he has always been treated with care, consideration and compassion by the staff dealing with him and I have seen them give similar care to others. Accommodation is always warm and clean and food is of restaurant standard
with a huge variety and portions to match.
Reply from Gareth Nixon-Moss, Director at Norwood HouseIt is always a pleasure to hear that the hard work our team puts into making every day special for all our residents guests is recognised and appreciated. It is particularly pleasing to read that our aims to provide a "restaurant" experience is valued. It helps to ensure those living with Dementia can still enjoy the finer qualities of life.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.546)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.546) out of 10 for Norwood House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.571 for Norwood House is calculated as follows: ( (178 Excellents x 5) + (45 Goods x 4) + (24 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 252 Ratings = 4.571
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Norwood House is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 71 registered maximum number of service users is 14.2, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
