There is a dedicated and highly trained Care Team whose compassion and skill make Donnington House a real HOME where frequent recommendation and positive feedback are regularly enjoyed.
Carers understand that for many the prospect of a move to a Residential Home can be a daunting one. To help dispel any concerns, carers offer free a 'Familiarisation Day' to prospective residents (so long as capacity allows) - where a prospective resident may spend a day at the home with a family member or friend.

Although generally the home has a homely feel and doesn't feel clinical or over modern, the rooms and bathrooms are a bit tired and need updating although not uncomfortable for dad. I also think the building is generally looking a bit tired and in need of a lick of paint and a bit of updating. The garden at the back is difficult to use despite the time spent on it and again is looking a bit scruffy at the moment which is a shame. The cost has risen by £1000 per month in the last 18 months and I think a bit more money should be spent on upkeep. I do feel that they could keep us more informed about what is happening with dad sometimes I am surprised when I find something out inadvertently that I think they should have at least made a call or messaged about.

Good morning. Thank you for this feedback - its nice to read that the care team are very caring and supportive and understand your dads needs well. I note what you say about the building and rooms - but that's not to say I agree:) - Bluebell House is a home - we have an ongoing programme of maintenance and renewal and I'm always struck by how clean, tidy and fresh it is when I visit. With regards to the garden, we are just emerging from a very wet winter - most gardens and outside areas I see are still in the process of being tidied up and made ready for the summer - with Bluebell no different. Care fees have indeed risen in the past 18 months - across the industry and in line with (and probably a bit behind) inflation. With regards to information - please do let the Care Home Managers know how often you would like to be update and for what reasons. We had started a search for a permanent home prior to this, but we did not need to continue our search when his placement became permanent. Dad is very settled at the home and is well looked after. We were very apprehensive about putting him in a home, but I knew that he would be safe in Bluebells as I worked with Kathy a few years back, so I knew I could trust her management and her staff. I question the recent communal room changes as this has caused distress to my mother. Was it necessary for this change to be made? Who does it benefit? The new view is lovely so why are the chairs facing the opposite way? There appears to be sufficient seating for the residents but not visitors....
On a positive note the care staff show that they have got to know the people they look after, including my mother, which I find very reassuring, plus they have got to know us as well. The laundry service and food is very good and the home is tidy.

Good afternoon EH. Thank you for taking the time to leave this review of your experience with our Care Team and Care Home at Bluebell House in Westward Ho! The Care Team have, at their choice, recently changed the way in which communal areas are used - this was done with prior discussion with residents and the care team. Feedback to date has been very positive. That being said, it is of concern that you feel that this has caused distress to your mum. Speaking to the Care Home Manager I am advised that your mum is now taking part in more communal activities, is interacting with more residents and is displaying no signs of distress or confusion. Noting what you say about visitor seating - we always see it as a positive when communal areas are busy with residents happy to leave their rooms and join in socially. Sometimes this will mean that there is limited seating space but we are fortunate to have a number of lounge areas that can be used. Kindest regards, Nathan.

The Care Team have, indeed, recently changed the layout of communal areas, and this has generally been really well received - do please talk to the manager about your concerns regarding visitor seating. I'm really sad to read about your experience with the food. I know our food provision across all of our homes is excellent. The problem appears to be related to how the food is being plated up / presented. This is a really important aspect of any meal and our teams have had training in this - it looks like we may need to retrain / monitor this a bit more at Bluebell House. We very much enjoyed attending the Family Fun Day. It was lovely to celebrate the 100th birthday of one of the residents. We appreciated the thought and care that had been put into making it a memorable day for him. As family, we are heartened to see how much my mother-in-law enjoyed the programme...
We have also appreciated the patient way my mother-in-law is gently encouraged to engage with other residents through the activities put on week by week. A big highlight earlier this year has been the change of room so that she now has a glorious view of the sea and coast that she loves and knows so well. It is also noticeable on recent trips that the intrusive sound of the call alarms seems to have been reduced, making for a calmer atmosphere in the home.

Yes, we've had lots and lots of really positive feedback about the Family Fun Day/100th Birthday celebrations. The care teams at Bluebell House and another home (next door) work really hard and certainly know how to put on an event! It's lovely to read how happy your mother-in-law is at Bluebell House and how she is encouraged to join in and enjoy events. And yes, the upgraded call bell system is indeed far far better, far more homely and relaxed whilst residents are still, of course, able to summon assistance just as before. He has a room with a view to the sea and enjoys sitting looking out. He provides the quizzes when asked for the residents, although does find it hard to write now. Due to his spinal condition he finds it uncomfortable spending time in the lounge therefore does not meet as many people as he wishes. It is a shame there are a lack of volunteer people who come round and spend time with the residents as stimulation is a real must and the staff don't have the time, although they are excellent, they have all the residents to care for. It is a very caring home.

Hello. Thank you for taking the time to post this really lovely feedback relating to your experience with our care team and care home at Bluebell House. It's lovely to read that our care team are very friendly. We've just completed a thorough upgrade of the food provision at Bluebell House where we have engaged with an industry expert provider. We are seeing fantastic results with more residents coming to the dining room for their meals, residents eating more and a general lift in mental and physical wellness. Bluebell has an activity coordinator and extensive activities schedule. We welcome volunteers and encourage them where possible - though any such individuals would need to have an enhanced CRB check and sign a Volunteer Contract. Thank you again for your kind feedback and it's lovely to read that your dad enjoys his sea views and the food. And our thanks to him for providing the quizzes for residents' activities. I came to Bluebell in 2019 as Deputy Manager and then in 2020 became the Registered Manager of Bluebell House. It is a wonderful home and is a home with a heart. Our residents are our family members.
Older Person Care, Dementia, Mental Health Condition, Physical Disability, Visual / Hearing Impairment are the registered (by the Care Quality Commission) categories of Care.
There are 30 Single Rooms and 3 Couples/Companion Rooms.
Own Furniture if required, Pet Friendly (or by arrangement), Close to Local shops, Near Public Transport, Minibus or other transport, Lift, Stairlift, Wheelchair Access, Gardens, Phone Point in own room, Television point in own room are some of the Facilities & Services.
