Bluebell House Care Home is one of a group of ten Residential Care Homes owned and operated by the Stonehaven (Healthcare) Group in Devon and Cornwall. As with all homes in the group each Resident enjoys a very high standard of care in a 'home and family' focused environment.

Bluebell House offers 25 bedrooms (mostly single) where elderly people, elderly people with physical disability and elderly people with dementia, are expertly cared for.

There is a dedicated and highly trained Care Team whose compassion and skill make Donnington House a real HOME where frequent recommendation and positive feedback are regularly enjoyed.

Carers understand that for many the prospect of a move to a Residential Home can be a daunting one. To help dispel any concerns, carers offer free a 'Familiarisation Day' to prospective residents (so long as capacity allows) - where a prospective resident may spend a day at the home with a family member or friend.

It is the desire to ensure that all who come into contact with Bluebell House leave with an overwhelmingly positive impression of the home.

Come along and see for yourselves. You will always be most welcome.

Bluebell continues to provide excellent care and support for Mum. It's a pleasure to visit and I am always made to feel welcome. I see the same staff regularly who know Mum well, her likes and dislikes and accommodate her preferences accordingly. In particular Mum has been encouraged to participate
in the choir which has noticeably increased her confidence.

The home has been a lovely place for my grandma in the past 4 years. The staff clearly care a lot about her. They organised a lovely blessing for me and my new wife when my grandma couldn't make the wedding.

I have been visiting a resident for almost a year. He is very happy here and exceptionally looked after. All the staff are warm and welcoming and very attentive, and management is fantastic and always ready to listen should a concern arise. We were very apprehensive about putting him in a home, but
I knew that he would be safe in Bluebells as I worked with Kathy a few years back, so I knew I could trust her management and her staff. Overall, Bluebells is beyond expectations due to Kathy. Thank you all at Bluebells.

I question the recent communal room changes as this has caused distress to my mother. Was it necessary for this change to be made? Who does it benefit? The new view is lovely so why are the chairs facing the opposite way? There appears to be sufficient seating for the residents but not visitors.
I don't think being offered a wheelchair to sit on is appropriate. Nor is it fair to expect residents to leave the lounge and go to their room when a visitor comes to see them. Where is the inclusivity, socialisation etc.?
On a positive note the care staff show that they have got to know the people they look after, including my mother, which I find very reassuring, plus they have got to know us as well. The laundry service and food is very good and the home is tidy.
Reply from Nathan Stone, Director. at Bluebell House Care HomeGood afternoon EH. Thank you for taking the time to leave this review of your experience with our Care Team and Care Home at Bluebell House in Westward Ho! The Care Team have, at their choice, recently changed the way in which communal areas are used - this was done with prior discussion with residents and the care team. Feedback to date has been very positive. That being said, it is of concern that you feel that this has caused distress to your mum. Speaking to the Care Home Manager I am advised that your mum is now taking part in more communal activities, is interacting with more residents and is displaying no signs of distress or confusion. Noting what you say about visitor seating - we always see it as a positive when communal areas are busy with residents happy to leave their rooms and join in socially. Sometimes this will mean that there is limited seating space but we are fortunate to have a number of lounge areas that can be used. Kindest regards, Nathan.

My father in law has only been staying at Bluebell for a week so far.
Staff are friendly and helpful that we have seen so far.
Dad seems really happy and in his words had to much food to eat, which is a good thing.

Bluebell has a homely feeling about it. Feel that I can speak to the manager when needed. Activities offered for anyone wanting to join in. I am not sure re the new layout with Activities upstairs as no seating for visitors but I am sure this can be rectified. I do not think the food is as good as it
used to be, sometimes it looks like it's been prepared in a hurry and thrown on a plate.
Reply from Nathan Stone, Director. at Bluebell House Care HomeGood morning AB. Thank you for this generally positive feedback relating to your experience with our Care Team and Care Home at Bluebell House in Westward Ho! It's great to read that you feel Bluebell House has a homely feel, that the manager is always available and that good activities are offered. The Care Team have, indeed, recently changed the layout of communal areas, and this has generally been really well received - do please talk to the manager about your concerns regarding visitor seating. I'm really sad to read about your experience with the food. I know our food provision across all of our homes is excellent. The problem appears to be related to how the food is being plated up / presented. This is a really important aspect of any meal and our teams have had training in this - it looks like we may need to retrain / monitor this a bit more at Bluebell House. Please do discuss any concerns with the Registered Manager, Deputy Manager. Kindest regards, Nathan.

My Mum was referred to Bluebell House after recurrent hospital stays as her Alzheimer's Disease worsened, as It became increasingly difficult to manage her care needs at home by my 88 year old Dad, even with our support. Although It was upsetting for us to start with, accepting that her needs were too
challenging for my Dad to cope with, my Mum has settled in. She has a nice cozy room, and is taken care of by very caring members of staff. The food is hearty home cooked food..all the usual favourites! Fish and chips on a Friday! Always a pudding too. The staff make my Dad and I very welcome, we are always offered a hot drink or a cake too. We have made an effort to get to know everyone too. Mum always looks well presented, and has her nails done too! (Thank you!) I wanted to also mention Georgie who is in charge of activities, who is so kind and encouraging with my Mum, as are all the staff. They are very friendly and kind which is so important, and work very hard.
Reply from Nathan Stone, Director. at Bluebell House Care HomeGood afternoon Samantha. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this lovely and detailed 5 / 5 star review of your experience with our Care Team and Care Home at Bluebell House in Westward Ho! North Devon. It's lovely to read that your mum has settled in well, enjoys her room, the food and the attention of our care team. It's lovely to read how you and your Dad are always made to feel so welcome when you visit (as you most certainly will be!) - thank you for highlighting the amazing work that Georgie does. We have a great care team at Bluebell House and are very proud of all that they do. Your review will give a very reassuring insight into 'life in a care home' to people who may be at an earlier stage in the journey, just starting to consider the option and experiencing the natural worries and concerns that come with such a significant life change. I recently visited my mum with my brother last week and thought how lovely it was to see all the artwork displayed a round her day room that the residents had been involved with.
It was a sea theme. We could see how much time and effort have been put into these wonderful creations.
We also visited
on Bluebell house family day.
And it was lovely to hear the residence choir singing.
We could see a lot of hard work had gone into this wonderful day.

We placed Dad at Bluebell after a diagnosis of Alzheimer's and he needed 24 hour care after various hospital stays for falls and illnesses, and he has been there a year now. Despite his decline he seems very content there and has a lovely room with fantastic sea views. The staff are wonderful & I can't
praise them all enough! They gently encourage him to engage in activities and he is very much cared for in a kind and empathic way. He has made some friends & says he is looked after well (he thinks he is staying at a hotel!) he really enjoys the activities and loves the food!
After feeling so guilty at placing him we soon realised he was in the best place for him to be well taken care of, and we highly recommend Bluebell if you are in the same position as we were.
Thank you to all the Carers, management, cleaners and other staff there who are helping make dads final years the best they can be.
Reply from Nathan Stone, Director. at Bluebell House Care HomeGood afternoon AL. Thank you so much for taking the time to post this review. It's really lovely to read about your Dad's journey at Bluebell House - that he seems very content and that he has made friends. Thank you for highlighting the amazing work of our care team - all of them - front of house and back. And thank for for detailing your own experience - the guilt that many people feel towards having their loved ones move into a residential care setting - and the subsequent realisation that in almost all cases it is the best option to enable loved ones to be well cared for and supported to live as full and active a life as they can. For the third year running Bluebell House held its family day last Saturday 28th June. What a great event! The range of activities, events and entertainment on the day were exceptional and the day was so enjoyed by the residents and their families and friends. The hard work both in the preparation
and planning and on the day by the staff was phenomenal and a heartfelt thank you does not seem enough for the gratitude felt by those attending

Mum has been at Bluebell House for three years this September, and in that time the care has always been extremely good. The staff show endless patience and care, even when mum is being uncooperative. There are plenty of opporttunities for her to participate in numerous activities, some of which mum
enjoys! Mum's dementia is advancing but she is obviously happy and settled, and I am always grateful for the care and support that everyone at Bluebell House gives to mum and to me.

We are pleased with the care my grandma has received during her time at Bluebell House Care Home. The staff are always very attentive to her needs and she feels safe and secure there. The activities coordinator does a marvellous job and works really hard to engage all residents, including my grandma
(which is not always easy)! To ensure she is not spending too much time on her own.

Dad was placed into Bluebell House Care Home following a hospital admission.
After much soul searching, as a family, we decided it was in Dad's best interest to remain as a resident at Bluebell, self-funding (whilst he can).
I'm very happy to report we made the right decision, Dad is thriving.
Thanks
to the activities coordinator, Dad is happily involved in all things sociable, especially the choir where you would have found him proudly taking lead vocals at the family fun day.
I would also like to give a shoutout to the manager who I find to be very personable, approachable and efficient.
I would like to give a thank you to all carers, cleaners, cooks the odd-job man who Dad seems to have taken a shine to.
I pray Dad can continue going from strength to strength in your care.

We very much enjoyed attending the Family Fun Day. It was lovely to celebrate the 100th birthday of one of the residents. We appreciated the thought and care that had been put into making it a memorable day for him. As family, we are heartened to see how much my mother-in-law enjoyed the programme of
events - especially the musical items.
A big thank you to one particular member of staff who organised the Fun Day and all those who ably supported her in putting on the day. It was indeed fun!
We have also appreciated the patient way my mother-in-law is gently encouraged to engage with other residents through the activities put on week by week. A big highlight earlier this year has been the change of room so that she now has a glorious view of the sea and coast that she loves and knows so well. It is also noticeable on recent trips that the intrusive sound of the call alarms seems to have been reduced, making for a calmer atmosphere in the home.
Reply from Nathan Stone, Director. at Bluebell House Care HomeHello. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this very detailed and very positive review of your experience with our care team and care home at Bluebell House. Yes, we've had lots and lots of really positive feedback about the Family Fun Day/100th Birthday celebrations. The care teams at Bluebell House and another home (next door) work really hard and certainly know how to put on an event! It's lovely to read how happy your mother-in-law is at Bluebell House and how she is encouraged to join in and enjoy events. And yes, the upgraded call bell system is indeed far far better, far more homely and relaxed whilst residents are still, of course, able to summon assistance just as before. Thank you again for your kind words - I know our care teams will really appreciate them. Kindest regards.

The staff are very friendly. My dad has been with them 2 years now. The food has got much better, as my dad does like his food.
He has a room with a view to the sea and enjoys sitting looking out. He provides the quizzes when asked for the residents, although does find it hard to write now. Due to
his spinal condition he finds it uncomfortable spending time in the lounge therefore does not meet as many people as he wishes. It is a shame there are a lack of volunteer people who come round and spend time with the residents as stimulation is a real must and the staff don't have the time, although they are excellent, they have all the residents to care for. It is a very caring home.
Reply from Nathan Stone, Director. at Bluebell House Care HomeHello. It's lovely to read that our care team are very friendly. We've just completed a thorough upgrade of the food provision at Bluebell House where we have engaged with an industry expert provider. We are seeing fantastic results with more residents coming to the dining room for their meals, residents eating more and a general lift in mental and physical wellness. Bluebell has an activity coordinator and extensive activities schedule. We welcome volunteers and encourage them where possible - though any such individuals would need to have an enhanced CRB check and sign a Volunteer Contract. Thank you again for your kind feedback and it's lovely to read that your dad enjoys his sea views and the food. And our thanks to him for providing the quizzes for residents' activities. Bluebelle House has some great staff with caring and conscientious empathy with their residents. They do their upmost to enhance the lives of all the residents with a great activity schedule. Since my mum went into the care home, they have treated her wonderfully and kept me informed of how she's doing.

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
Mum continues to go from strength to strength with the care and support of the team at Bluebell House. There is always something happening and one staff member in particular works tirelessly to ensure all residents are involved in activities that bring joy and purpose to their days. In addition, another
staff member has been working hard to find appealing food options to increase Mum's variety of food choices too.

  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.721 for Bluebell House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (181 Excellents x 5) + (41 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 233 Ratings = 4.721
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Bluebell House Care Home is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 36 registered maximum number of service users is 7.2, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
