There is a dedicated and highly trained Care Team whose compassion and skill make Donnington House a real HOME where frequent recommendation and positive feedback are regularly enjoyed.
Carers understand that for many the prospect of a move to a Residential Home can be a daunting one. To help dispel any concerns, carers offer free a 'Familiarisation Day' to prospective residents (so long as capacity allows) - where a prospective resident may spend a day at the home with a family member or friend.
It is the desire to ensure that all who come into contact with Bluebell House leave with an overwhelmingly positive impression of the home.

Yes, I know an awful lot of work, thought and planning has gone into celebrating his 100th Birthday later this year - he's going to be spoilt rotten! Yes, the gardens have been transformed, amazing work from our maintenance man! The addition of the lift to the second floor, and the improvements that this has made to the entrance hallway are, indeed, amazing, better than we had even thought they would be in fact! I am 3 hours away and it is difficult for me to visit, but I try to call most days. I estimate that 2 of 3 attempts to call the phone is not answered (50% during the week, 75% at weekends). It is frustrating as, when I do get through, Mum is often asleep, given her condition, so there are few chances to speak. She says she is very lonely, I think she receives personal care, food, but would benefit from more company.

I know we have corresponded previously with regards to the funding of your mother's care and your refusal to acknowledge receipt of the care home contract and fee rate that was agreed with you upon placing your mum at the home. I only have limited words with which to reply here. In brief - your mum is paying £1,387.37 pw. Specialist equipment not supplied by NHS / OT's does incure an extra cost which has to go on the care fee. Pneumonia is, sadly, a common illness - especially in the elderly. Your mum had Covid once towards the end of the pandemic - she did not require hospitalisation. All team members are paid sick pay and should not work if unwell. We have a very active activities schedule in Bluebell House. I'm sorry about the phone not being answered. Mostly, of course, I'm sorry to learn that your mum has entered an EOL stage. I know our team will continue to ensure she is well cared for. Kindest regards.

Any problems were easily solved, and everything to help Mum recover after a fall had been done. As a family, we can not thank them enough. I will be putting in a complaint about this nursing home. They took my mum knowing all her problems with dementia saying they could cope within 3 months. They gave her a month to move because they can't cope. The matron was never available when we needed a chat, always put on to an assistant. My dad put money in their coffers for mum to have her hair cut and to see a chiropodist but that never happened either. Now as Mum broke a TV they are trying to make my dad pay for a new one, way over the odds. I was also told that dad could visit any time. That was a lie as he was turned away at least twice because they hadn't booked him in when I know we did. I will be taking this to CQC and head office.

As was discussed at that time it's really important at the pre-admission stage that all information relating to an individual's care needs are disclosed. On occasions such information is withheld for fear that a desired placement will refuse the admission. Sadly, the most likely outcome is that the placement very quickly breaks down as it's not suitable for the resident or the care home. Our Care Home Manager at Bluebell House, and her Deputy Manager and Care Team, are excellent and always available. You have raised a number of other issues but we have only a limited number of characters to reply. I'll sign off by saying that we do not feel your complaints are justified and that the care provided to your Mum was excellent. You are, of course, most welcome to take a complaint to the CQC and we will assist them with any information that they may request. We hope your Mum settles in well at her new Care Home. I cannot thank the staff enough for the amazing care they have given to my mother and the support they have shown the whole family. They go above and beyond their duties making sure that Mum is about to communicate through video calls to ourselves abroad. Mum is always well dressed and her interests addressed, in particular with her joy of playing the piano. I cannot recommend this home enough. We have been so lucky. Mum is very happy.

Dad having to go into care was an extremely emotional time, however, he has been at Bluebell House for over a year now and although it has been a tough time for all due to the pandemic, throughout it all the care he has received has been kind and professional. Whenever I ring for an update the carers are always happy to fill me in on how dad is getting on and book me in visits. I feel the carers know dad’s personality and character and genuinely care about him. Dad is a wonderful man who deserves the best and I feel he is certainly getting that at Bluebell House.

Good morning Joanna. Thank you for leaving this really lovely and personal review of your experience with our care team and care home at Bluebell House in Westward Ho! North Devon. It's always really nice when people recognise the importance of our care teams in this way - they are - of course - at work but, whilst working in a highly regulated and formalised care environment - they nonetheless create an atmosphere that is homely and person focussed. That's some achievement and, as you say, it's the result of treating people, well, as people! Thank you also for recognising that the home is well managed, there is, indeed, a mountain of administration behind the scenes and the home manager and her management team have this all well under control. All staff have been supportive, dedicated, caring and above all seem to care deeply for Dad which is reflected in their interaction with Dad and their collective knowledge of his needs, well being and behaviours from whomever I speak to when I call to check-in. Doesn't matter who I speak to, they all seem well aware of Dad and how he is progressing. A recent spate of non attended falls has been monitored closely and responded to with total professionalism and care, providing Dad with the safest possible environment for his needs.

I came to Bluebell in 2019 as Deputy Manager and then in 2020 became the Registered Manager of Bluebell House. It is a wonderful home and is a home with a heart. Our residents are our family members.
