The Parkland House team work so hard to provide the highest possible standard of care and they are thrilled to be recognised for their work by the CQC, and to be rated ‘outstanding’ in four areas: – caring, responsive, effective and well-led (June 2019).

Parkland House is located close to the city centre on the western outskirts of Exeter. Parkland supports 52 individuals, many of whom live with dementia. The home boasts beautiful lounges with a terrace overlooking the landscaped garden. The gardens feature easy access paths, a greenhouse, raised beds and sensory features throughout.

The staff at the home assist residents with a variety of different activities including massage, gardening, knitting and trips out into the local community to the seaside and local garden centre. The home (outside of the pandemic) also receives regular visits from entertainers, the local donkey sanctuary, and local church groups.

The home has also been accredited by 'the Eden alternative' - a philosophy that ensures that those living in a home do not face loneliness, boredom or sense of helplessness.

Mum has been in Parkland House now for just over a year after experiencing many difficulties living at home. In that year her general health and wellbeing has improved dramatically.
The care she receives at the home is wonderful and it is a great relief to me knowing Mum is so well cared for.

Dad was well looked after. His needs were met and his like of music appreciated. He always enjoyed his meals, his room was always clean, tidy and well cared for. The staff knew Dad and chatted to him when he walked around. They were always friendly and supportive when visiting.

Parkland looked after and cared for my wife, who had dementia, in a wonderful and caring way for six years.
Right up to the time when she passed away, their attention to her every need was fantastic.
I have nothing but praise for Parkland House.

My father had been at Parkland House for just over a year when he passed away very recently. He was always treated with dignity and care and the staff were calm and friendly. It was a huge relief to us as his family that Dad was being looked after so well. Even with certain Covid restrictions in place
for most of his stay, when we were allowed to visit we were always welcomed by warm and friendly staff. During his last days, they couldn't have done more for him and looked out for us too, in our fragile state. His room was always clean and tidy, he loved the food and enjoyed having people around to talk to. I'm going to miss visiting Parkland House. Choosing to put a parent into a care home is a very difficult and emotional decision. We could not look after Dad at home and we were very worried about making the move to residential care but Parkland House has been amazing and I would highly recommend this care home.
Reply from Stephen Arnold, Director at Parkland HouseThank you very much for taking the time to write a review, especially so soon after your loss. I'm really pleased Parkland House was a good choice for you and your family. The whole care team at Parkland will be so pleased to hear your feedback. We appreciate how difficult and emotional the decision is and we're glad your father enjoyed his time with us. Thank you again for writing a review. Thank you.

My uncle has settled in really well. I was worried after living on his own for so many years since his father died that he would struggle. The staff are very friendly and caring, they all know my uncle and think a lot of him. I’m pleased he is usually in the lounge when I come in and not on his own
in his room. His eyesight is very poor and I don’t think he realises the other residents have problems and doesn’t understand why they come into his room or want to touch him. It is sad he has had to go into a home, but overall I am very happy he is at Parkland and being looked after so well.

It is quite early days for us. But my mother seems to have settled into Parkland house well. Her new surroundings have been a huge change for her but the constant 24/7 care has helped her relax. And the kindness and compassion of all the staff have made a huge influence on her changed circumstances.
I got as much information about Parkland house beforehand, as I could from lots of different people and am so glad, as the information I gathered helped me make a hard decision. I'm so glad mother is now a resident here. There seem to be activities regularly which is lovely and helps her interact with other people around her.
Reply from Stephen Arnold, Director at Parkland HouseThank you very much for taking the time to write a review. We're really pleased that everything is going well so far. The whole team at Parklands will be delighted to hear the feedback. Thank you again, Stephen.

The Manager was very flexible as I had a difficult situation with home care, I was able to take my husband in and out when things at home were difficult.
The staff were very kind to me as well as my husband. The chef was very kind always trying to give my husband the food he liked and some of the staff
although busy, would pop in and chat with my husband.
I thank them all for helping at a very difficult time from the bottom of my heart.

My wife is 92-years-old and has been in residential care at Parkland House for approximately six and a half years; she suffers from long term Vascular Dementia, Muscular Degeneration and Glaucoma and is inconvenient and immobile. The care she receives at Parkland House is first class; the staff are
helpful, caring and courteous. She is always clean and dressed for visits. They also ensure she is helped with eating etc. The accommodation is very good and well maintained.

My friend is happy at Parklands House Care Home. I cannot answer all ratings, such as activities, I go to her room and do not see what goes on. Treated with dignity, how do I know, I am not always there!
What I observe is very satisfactory and I am happy with most duties they have to do.
The staff
do their best and it is always a pleasant place to visit.

Since my friend has been a resident at Parklands I have experienced nothing but good communication and facilitation of her care and my contact with her in this challenging COVID crisis tinted times. I recognize the staff are under extreme pressure to meet the government regulations and I see how hard
the management are working to honour the needs of all parties involved. I greatly appreciate the work they are doing, they are all clear and kind which is the best we can hope for. Keep up the great work Parklands.

The staff are always friendly, and I can see they care well for my mother. They make an effort to put in activities like baking, singing and ensuring there are books and newspapers as materials and more. They have a good understanding of dementia care, and I have seen so many improvements like silent
buzzers and making room door like front doors.

I was visiting my mother. We were put in Room 1 and it seemed very soulless as there were no pictures or ornaments. Could some plants or flowers be put in there to make it more homely. The reception and testing procedure is excellent and the staff as always were lovely.
Reply from Louise Arnold, Managing Director at Parkland HouseThank you for the review of Parkland House. I think you are referring to our visiting room which I agree is void of decorations but this was felt to be the best from an infection prevention point of view. I will look into whether we can make some improvements whilst still maintaining stringent infection prevention measures.

My Father has been in the home for just over two years. He has been very well looked after and has put on weight since he has been here. The staff are very kind and caring. The home had a great programme of events prior to Covid and hopefully, it will not be long before the entertainment can fully resume.
I would have no hesitation in recommending the home.

My parents have lived at Parkland House since 2017 and have received exemplary care. The staff are kind, compassionate, caring and responsive. They treat their residents as family and share the joy we have when we visit. The house is very clean and maintained with great care - it's always bright and
fresh when we visit. The staff all know my parents really well and go the extra mile to make special days really special. They are very understanding and keep us informed of any concerns they have. They have managed magnificently during the pandemic under extreme strain as we would have predicted. Before the pandemic we used to get lovely photos and just snippets of information to keep us in touch - it would be lovely to start receiving these again when pressures have eased.
Reply from Louise Arnold, Managing Director at Parkland HouseThank you so much for the wonderful review of Parkland House. We thank you and your family for all the support you provide to Parkland House. We look forward to continued celebrations with your parents.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.404)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.404) out of 10 for Parkland House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 10 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.692 for Parkland House is calculated as follows: ( (87 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 117 Ratings = 4.692
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.712 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Parkland House is based on 10 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.75
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 52 registered maximum number of service users is 10.4. 10 Positive Reviews ÷ 10.4 = 0.962
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Embarking on a career in the care sector has been one of the most rewarding and transformative experiences of my life. I am proud of what I have achieved in the last 32 years, starting from the beginning as a care assistant to becoming a registered manager. This journey has been filled with numerous challenges, learning opportunities, and the profound joy of making a difference in the lives of individuals with learning disabilities and individuals in elderly care.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role as a registered manager is the opportunity to mentor and support other care assistants. I strive to create a culture of continuous learning and professional development, encouraging my team to pursue their own career aspirations within the care sector. Witnessing their growth and success brings me immense pride and satisfaction.
To those considering a career in the care sector, I offer this advice: approach your work with compassion, dedication, and an open heart. The rewards of making a positive impact on the lives of others are immeasurable. Be willing to learn, adapt, and collaborate with others. Your journey in the care sector can be as fulfilling and transformative as mine has been.

When not at work, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, enjoying days out and watching my 2 beautiful grandchildren, who are 2 and 4 years of age grow and develop.
