The Parkland House team work so hard to provide the highest possible standard of care and they are thrilled to be recognised for their work by the CQC, and to be rated ‘outstanding’ in four areas: – caring, responsive, effective and well-led (June 2019).

Parkland House is located close to the city centre on the western outskirts of Exeter. Parkland supports 52 individuals, many of whom live with dementia. The home boasts beautiful lounges with a terrace overlooking the landscaped garden. The gardens feature easy access paths, a greenhouse, raised beds and sensory features throughout.

The staff at the home assist residents with a variety of different activities including massage, gardening, knitting and trips out into the local community to the seaside and local garden centre. The home (outside of the pandemic) also receives regular visits from entertainers, the local donkey sanctuary, and local church groups.

The home has also been accredited by 'the Eden alternative' - a philosophy that ensures that those living in a home do not face loneliness, boredom or sense of helplessness.

The staff go all out to make sure my mum is cared for. They give help when she needs it but will let her do as much as she can manage herself. It is a happy care home. The carers always have a smile on their faces and nothing is too much trouble for them. I would highly recommend Parkland House.
Reply from Louise Arnold, Managing Director at Parkland HouseThank you so much for your glowing review of Parkland House. I agree that the staff are smiling noticed even behind the face masks and are all passionate about supporting those living at Parkland House.

My Mother was moved to Parkland House during the Covid pandemic therefore my wife and I were unable to visit and get a feel for the place nor meet the staff, as you can imagine this was very unsettling. We relied on telephone conversations to find out how Mum's health was and how she was settling in.
Each time we phoned, we found the staff extremely helpful, most kind and informative. Restricted visits, adhering to Government guidelines, have been handled with empathy. Mum always looks clean and very well cared for. She was recently most unwell, feared to be at the end of her life. We were kept up to date with the situation and our time spent with her on what we thought was going to be our last visit was handled with dignity. We cannot praise the staff of Parkland House enough.
Reply from Louise Arnold, Managing Director at Parkland HouseThank you so much for your review. We understand that moving into a care home at any time is a difficult decision and clearly during the pandemic you have put so much trust in our staff team. We are so pleased that our staff have shown their care, compassion to your mum, you and your wife.

Mum has been at Parkland House since November 2019; she is really well cared for in lovely surroundings by kind and thoughtful staff. The home is very clean, there are activities for her to do, and in the summer she particularly enjoys the garden. She's able to potter about and get involved with lots
of things and I know that she is safe and happy. This last year has been so difficult as we've not been able to visit as normal, but we have kept in touch through video calls, carefully arranged outside visits last summer and now face to face visits with all the safety procedures. This has all been managed well despite the extra time and effort that's required to manage all types of contact and keep residents safe; I was delighted when I could finally hold Mum's hand again earlier this month. I'm so pleased that Mum came to Parkland House, I really can't fault it - Mum is treated with dignity and as an individual with likes and dislikes all catered for. I'm grateful to everyone there.
Reply from Louise Arnold, Managing Director at Parkland HouseThank you so much for your review and for supporting Parkland through the pandemic. We know that visiting has been a constant challenge and I am delighted you are back to holding hands. We are looking forward to warmer weather to enjoy the garden and hope you will be able to do this with your mum.

My parents were residents at Parkland House from 2014, and I visited unannounced on a weekly basis. I cannot praise the staff too highly, for their unfailing kindness in their care and the way in which they respect the dignity of each individual. Never once did I see something that could cause concern,
and it was very apparent that just interacting with the residents and giving of their time to them was the most important job. It is incredibly hard to have to relinquish care of loved ones to other people, and not a decision that can be taken lightly, but I know now that in choosing Parklands it was the best I could have done for Mum and Dad.

Knowing my mum was very safe and being looked after so well was a huge comfort to me. Mum had Dementia and the staff were amazing with her.
She passed at the home and the palliative care she received was first class. A wonderful home with great staff. 10/10.

I just wanted to let you know how grateful the whole family is for the love and exceptional care shown to my mum.
Mum was a resident there for over five years and although in the last stage of her life she had severe dementia she was always treated with great love and respect.
Mum loved living in
Parkland, being someone who loved her food she was extremely happy as the food is amazing, having actually sampled it myself!
All the staff were so good at looking after Mum, always treating Mum with such kindness and playing her favourite Tom Jones music for her, even when they must have heard Delilah a hundred times or more!
The manager is exceptional, always available for a chat and I would now consider her as a friend.
She runs an amazing team who are always smiling and friendly to residents and visitors. Everything always running smoothly and efficiently.
The CQC rating of Outstanding is well deserved. Thank you Parkland House.

It was the hardest decision of my life to put my mother into care. However, choosing Parkland House turned out to be my best decision. The warmth, kindness and care shown to residents and visitors alike, from our very first visit, was second to none. The efforts made to include everyone in activities
and special occasions was brilliant. I have lovely memories of Mum singing along on music day and shaking her maracas! As Mum slowly declined, and eventually slept peacefully away, I could never fault their attention to detail.

Parkland House carers were always friendly. Was impressed that the carers knew immediately who I was by name and who I had come to visit. Mum was safe and well cared for which put my mind so much at rest and I could visit Mum as her daughter and not her carer (which I had been for years before she came
to live at Parklands). The home always smelt nice on entering, was welcome and warm. I would recommend Parkland Home to anyone who has to make the difficult decision to place their relative in a care home.

Mum became unable to look after herself just before Christmas and we were so grateful that Parkland House was able to find a place for her at very short notice. She had previously been a resident at Parkland House but with excellent care had recovered enough to be able to go home for 12 months. The
kind and caring staff made her so welcome and she has settled very well. Although this has been a difficult time for our mum and the family we have every confidence in the staff and manager at Parkland House and it's great relief to us to know that she is being so well looked after.

It was an awful day in November 2017 when my dad had to go into a home with his dementia. The help we got from Parkland House made us both feel as if people did care! The management and staff could not do enough to help us through a difficult time. His room was perfect and had access to a wonderful
garden. We can't thank everyone enough as this has allowed us to bring dad home for a period of quality time with his family before it's too late.
Many thanks.

A very well appointed care home with excellent facilities and a great weekly calendar of events that all residents can enjoy. It also serves meals and snacks of a high standard that appeal to even the hardest to please! Perhaps most importantly though the team were so very welcoming to dad. Friendly
and caring in their approach at all times and I felt very confident in entrusting him to their very safe hands.
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Parkland House to others as the quality of care that I observed was always of the highest quality.

The staff and carers treated my mother with great tenderness and warmth. For them, it is more than a job, it is a real concern for the well-being of the residents. Recent improvements to the common areas and gardens have created a very nice space for the residents and really without going over the top.
The care at Parklands House is as good as it gets and all the staff are to be commended.

The home was in my view excellent in every way. My mother was treated with dignity at all times by caring and committed staff. Her room was always clean and fresh as was mum herself. The activities were plentiful and greatly enjoyed by all the residents. I could not have asked for more from them - every
query or concern was dealt with on contact. A big thanks to all at 'Parkland House' Exeter, that gave my mother a last few happy years. 'It's just like home here' - So what more can be said to that?

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.404)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.404) out of 10 for Parkland House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 10 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.692 for Parkland House is calculated as follows: ( (87 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 117 Ratings = 4.692
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.712 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Parkland House is based on 10 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.75
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 52 registered maximum number of service users is 10.4. 10 Positive Reviews ÷ 10.4 = 0.962
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Embarking on a career in the care sector has been one of the most rewarding and transformative experiences of my life. I am proud of what I have achieved in the last 32 years, starting from the beginning as a care assistant to becoming a registered manager. This journey has been filled with numerous challenges, learning opportunities, and the profound joy of making a difference in the lives of individuals with learning disabilities and individuals in elderly care.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role as a registered manager is the opportunity to mentor and support other care assistants. I strive to create a culture of continuous learning and professional development, encouraging my team to pursue their own career aspirations within the care sector. Witnessing their growth and success brings me immense pride and satisfaction.
To those considering a career in the care sector, I offer this advice: approach your work with compassion, dedication, and an open heart. The rewards of making a positive impact on the lives of others are immeasurable. Be willing to learn, adapt, and collaborate with others. Your journey in the care sector can be as fulfilling and transformative as mine has been.

When not at work, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, enjoying days out and watching my 2 beautiful grandchildren, who are 2 and 4 years of age grow and develop.
