The house is very much a 'home' in the very personal sense. The ethos seems to be that the 'carers' are there at the invitation of the residents in order that each resident can maintain an independence and enjoyment of life. This is a residential home where the most detailed wishes, needs and preferences
of each resident are paramount. The management respond immediately to the slightest request or query. The ratio of carers to residents is high and therefore there is never a constant ringing of bells from residents needing assistance. The carers busy themselves, not with 'chores' but with being companions. I really appreciate the help my mother receives. As a visitor, one always offered tea, coffee cake and indeed to share in meals. The environment is tasteful with attention to details of the best quality, such as beautifully laid dining tables. Fresh flowers throughout add to the feeling of this being a place where people really care. It is just as Mummy's own home used to be!

Highfield House provided a room for my mother when she fell at home in late April. They were prepared to take her in at very short notice and late at night. The care she received there was excellent. All staff were very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. I would recommend it very highly.

My mother-in-law has been living at Highfield House for the last eight months and we cannot speak highly enough of her care. She thoroughly enjoys the attention she receives and it appears that nothing is too much trouble for the staff who have made every effort to engage her in the wide range of activities
they offer.

As a visitor, I am always made very welcome and I am kept informed either face to face or by email.

We think she is very lucky to have made her home at Highfield.

Highfield House is the most wonderful residential home and richly deserves all their accolades.
They made me feel at home straight away and every single member of staff could not have been nicer, kinder and more attentive.
They went out of their way to make sure I had everything I needed which was
much appreciated, especially the cup of Horlicks in the middle of the night.
I wish Highfield House and all the staff the very best for the future.

My mother resided at Highfield House for almost 7 years. I am an only child and live overseas. I was able to return twice a year. The attention, care, support, understanding and acceptance from everyone plus much laughter every day, resulted in all the staff BEING my mother's family. I will never
be able to express my deep gratitude for 7 years free of worry. Highfield House itself is warm, welcoming and very attractive. The garden is a haven and delight. The selection and training of all staff members is exemplary. The owners are to be highly commended for their outstanding commitment to providing the very best care for all Residents at Highfield House.

Wonderfully welcoming and supportive.
Whenever we come to visit there's a lovely family feel to the home. They offer great activities for when they want to get involved but also give them the space when they want it. They listen and respect the residents truly allowing them to make it a home from
home.
The staff are brilliant and manage to handle tricky family situations to ensure the residents are the focus and that all that need to are involved in the residents care.

Highfield House has been a brilliant residence for my grandmother. The staff are warm and dedicated, the facilities and accommodation are excellent. It rarely feels like a care home but a real home and it has consistently met the needs of my grandmother in a thoughtful and caring way.

My grandmother is currently staying at Highfield House and seems to be enjoying it thoroughly, the initial transition was difficult as she suffers from dementia and her medication was making her less stable on her feet. Since she has settled down she seems to be much happier and more mentally stable.
The carers allowed for her to keep her cat who she loves dearly and I think this helped her settle down as well. The staff at Highfield House are likeable, caring and attentive. I can't think of anywhere better for my grandmother to be.

The staff take the residents out for visits to local coffee shops, out for meals and other fun activities to keep them entertained and their days interesting and while my grandmother doesn't always remember the days out, she seems very happy.

I cannot praise everyone at Highfield House highly enough. It really is like home from home. A recent health problem for my mother has been dealt with, with kindness, consideration and a real determination to help her recover in the best possible way. Above and beyond the call of duty. We are able to
visit at any time without notice, spend as long as we want there and bring our labrador to visit my Ma which is a great delight for her.
The food is excellent and the birthday cake that was made for my mother's birthday was wonderful. Everyone goes out for coffee, lunch, dinner, trips to the garden centre, the seaside etc... they have people come in to entertain. If fit and able, you can come and go as you please. The most important thing is, that having looked after my mother myself for a number of years, I do not worry about her care at Highfield because I trust them, I know she is happy and the care she receives is exemplary.

Our great Aunt has been in Highfield House since 12th December 2013. Her individual needs, both physical, psychological and emotional have been catered for her admirably. She has now deteriorated both physically and mentally, but is till cheerful when we visit every 6 weeks.
We live 200 miles away,
and she is extremely deaf and unable to hear us when on the phone. This makes it difficult to communicate with her during the times we are not down at Castle Cary, Somerset.

After visiting Highfield House a year ago, meeting the owner and being shown round, we decided that this was the perfect place for our friend and she agreed. We looked no further and, a year later can say that our high expectations were exceeded. People we have met since, who have experience of the
home, have uniformly commented on the many excellent qualities of Highfield House.

The greatest strength of the home is the quality of the staff who are invariably kind, understanding, patient and willing to listen. They do all they can to ensure that each resident is treated with respect and helped to achieve a really good quality of life. The food is of a high standard and visitors are always offered refreshments when they arrive. The management is excellent and it is always easy to speak to one of the team. Whatever the issue, they give you plenty of time and display a remarkable understanding of residents' needs and show a great sense of humour.

The care my mother receives is excellent. The staff are not only efficient but extremely friendly and supportive towards the residents, they engage in conversations and encourage laughter. There are always lots of activities held in Highfield House and visits outside of the home for any residents
who want to go out is encouraged. Visitors are made welcome and discussions about their family members with all of the staff is never considered a nuisance. Highfield House has a very pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. The Managers run an exceptionally caring and efficient residential home.

The previous care home my father was in would not take him down the pub (his spiritual home), which he only confided in me once he was in hospital with no clean clothes and no money and he had to wait five days until my daughter and I went to visit him in hospital in Kent. No one from home visited him
so we decided to find him a new home in Somerset to be nearer family. The home I found for him was Highfield House and the difference was unbelievable. They would take him down to the pub any time he wanted and the pub would ring the home when he was ready to go back. There were mostly women in the home and it meant that in the pub he could chat to other men (he was very much a man's man). This in itself kept him going because he was enjoying life. His favourite dinner was liver and bacon. Once he had to go to hospital, and he missed it. When the Manager visited him in hospital, he was told it would be his first meal when he got back in the home - that's how caring they are. The care he received was second to none. Even when he was clearly dying, the owner put his records on for him to listen to. This home is more than any highly recommended.

  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.827 for Highfield House Residential Care Home Ltd is calculated as follows: ( (159 Excellents x 5) + (31 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 191 Ratings = 4.827
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Highfield House Residential Care Home Ltd is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 22 registered maximum number of service users is 4.4, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 2012

From a young age, I knew that my career would be caring for others, and I have worked in social care for 37 years, as I am passionate about ensuring that people receive the care and support they need and want in their everyday lives, as well as serving the community generally.

I studied for 3 years alongside working with the Open University, gaining the Diploma in Health and Social Welfar,e then attended Strode College, gaining an Advanced Certificate in Therapeutic Counselling. My second Diploma, in Leadership for Health and Social Care, was achieved in 2013 whilst working at Highfield House.

I am very lucky to have been approached to work at Highfield House initially as a Care Manager, and then in 2017, I became the Registered Manager for the home. Highfield House is a fantastic place to work with an amazing team of experienced staff, many of whom have been here many years, and I could not be prouder of the excellent care that is continuously provided to every resident.

Providing good quality End-Of-Life Care for people and their loved ones is a particular passion of mine, and I am thrilled to have been recently enrolled on the Somerset Spiritual Care End-of-Life Strategy Group. This will involve working closely with other professionals who are passionate about improving and normalising this area of end-of-life care across the country, to ensure that every aspect of the person's needs and wishes are cared for.
