My mother moved into Highfield House on 4th January. She is suffering from dementia combined with a series of falls, no longer safe to live on her own. I was SO lucky to have Highfield House recommended to me by one of her carers. What a lovely place!. Much more a home from home than I thought possible.
Kind attentive staff who have helped me as much as my mum. She is struggling with the change but I have every confidence in the staff and owners. They keep me updated in everything in between visits. I cannot fault the care given.

My mother in law has been a resident at Highfield House for over 4 years. The home provides a warm friendly environment. The food is all home cooked and of an excellent standard. Residents are able to chose from a varied menu and all individual dietary needs are catered for. Hygiene across the home
is of he highest level.
She is looked after by professional caring staff who show her great love and understanding. She is encouraged to maintain her mobility and to achieve tasks independently but offered support when required whilst at all times protecting her dignity.
In addition the home offers many activities and outings which enable her to remain social in the home and wider community.
The home has an excellent relationship with external professionals. When Mary was admitted to hospital recently a comprehensive care package was taken with her so the hospital staff had extensive knowledge of her medical and physical needs.
Mary's care at Highfield House is exceptional. Nothing is ever too much trouble for management or staff. Communication with family is ongoing so we are always up to date with Mary's current health and wellbeing.

My mother spent 7 very happy years at Highfields until her death in March 2015. From the moment she set foot in the home until the day she died I cannot fault or commend sufficiently the level of care, comfort and kindness she received. Even though it is a residential home, during her final illness
they were determined to nurse her and ensure she ended her days at the home even though it was enormously demanding on the owners and staff. They are wonderful, compassionate and kind people who really understand the meaning of care. The home is bright, comfortable and genuinely feels like someone's home. Our family is profoundly grateful to the Manager and her staff for enabling my mother to enjoy her last years in comfort and to die peacefully in her own bed. We cannot thank them enough and would recommend Highfields to anyone who is looking for a happy and caring environment for a much loved parent.

  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.827 for Highfield House Residential Care Home Ltd is calculated as follows: ( (159 Excellents x 5) + (31 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 191 Ratings = 4.827
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Highfield House Residential Care Home Ltd is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 22 registered maximum number of service users is 4.4, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 2012

From a young age, I knew that my career would be caring for others, and I have worked in social care for 37 years, as I am passionate about ensuring that people receive the care and support they need and want in their everyday lives, as well as serving the community generally.

I studied for 3 years alongside working with the Open University, gaining the Diploma in Health and Social Welfar,e then attended Strode College, gaining an Advanced Certificate in Therapeutic Counselling. My second Diploma, in Leadership for Health and Social Care, was achieved in 2013 whilst working at Highfield House.

I am very lucky to have been approached to work at Highfield House initially as a Care Manager, and then in 2017, I became the Registered Manager for the home. Highfield House is a fantastic place to work with an amazing team of experienced staff, many of whom have been here many years, and I could not be prouder of the excellent care that is continuously provided to every resident.

Providing good quality End-Of-Life Care for people and their loved ones is a particular passion of mine, and I am thrilled to have been recently enrolled on the Somerset Spiritual Care End-of-Life Strategy Group. This will involve working closely with other professionals who are passionate about improving and normalising this area of end-of-life care across the country, to ensure that every aspect of the person's needs and wishes are cared for.
