My sister in law has settled really well at Portcullis House and that is mainly due to the care and attention of the staff!

I was apprehensive about her going into residential care but she is so happy it was obviously the right decision

Staff were very good and friendly, Although seemed very slow to get emails back and seemed to of had to chase for information regarding payment etc which was left 2 days before we were due to drop off my mum. Cannot fault cleanliness at all. I have a few concerns regarding some things that were promised such as entertainment which were told was a regular thing during the assessment at home and would be during my mums stay which in fact there was none. Was told residents were put to bed at 6pm which seems awful early but that could be down to not having enough staff night times which is understandable from a safety point of view.

Mum has been in the home for a couple of months now, and I have visited twice. On both occasions, the care I have witnessed is exceptional, from dedicated caring staff. The facilities are the best they can be, but clean and comfortable. I believe the staff are working to the best of their ability with Mum's dementia condition.

My brother has been at Portcullis House for some time now. I live a long way away, and because of his particular issue, I don't see him or speak to him. But I always find the staff very considerate and friendly, and they let me know how my brother is doing.

My father has been a resident at Porticullis House for 5 years. His care throughout the period has been excellent. He considers Porticullis his home and has built trusting relationships with a number of staff members. He has been happy and content with his care needs being met appropriately on a daily basis. Recently, staff members have been very helpful in respect of supporting and informing a Care Act assessment around my father, future care and how it will be financed.

Mum had become very lonely living alone and she was isolated due to declining mobility. Dementia and Alzheimers was also taking hold. Despite my brother and I's best efforts to keep her in her own home (we did not live nearby) she was no longer safe or happy.
After living in the same house for over 60 years, we were concerned that mum would not settle into a care home. We need not have been concerned as mum settled into life at Portcullis House very quickly. She enjoys the companionship, activities, food and regular hot drinks and sweets treats. She is always clean and tidy. Portcullis House is 'homely' and comfortable. When the weather is bright, mum enjoys sitting in the conservatory where she watches the birds (as she previously did in her own home).

I have only ever seen staff be kind and courteous to mum (and to the other residents and to me). We are so pleased that we chose Portcullis House for mum. It is a huge relief to us that mum is safe, warm, well fed and happy.

We are so pleased that she feels settled and at home with us, and is able to continue doing the things she loves. I recently enjoyed Christmas Day with my Dad at Portcullis House. It was a privilege to be included in the home's festivities. The skilled and dedicated staff worked tirelessly to ensure the residents enjoyed a special and joyous day. There were thoughtful gifts for everyone and a wonderful, traditional Christmas lunch with all the trimmings.

The calm and nurturing ethos of the home shone through as it does each and every day.

My 96 years old mother had to move into care in 2024 as she was no longer safe in her own home. Thanks to the care, compassion and professionalism of all staff she settled in very quickly. Staff take time to understand and meet her needs. All residents are treated as individuals, with respect and dignity. Varied and stimulating activities are provided but residents have a choice to join in. Visitors and dogs are welcome. A homely atmosphere prevails with lots of care, laughter and kindness.

Overall Experience
In my experience, Portcullis appears to be a good, well-run care home with friendly, caring and helpful staff. My only minor observations are:-
1 - The overall accommodation is a little cramped and my Brother's room is not ensuite. His previous room, in a different care home with the same company, was ensuite.
2 - When phoning residents there appears to be nowhere private to have a conversation given the range constraints of the mobile handset used by the residents.

3 - Management responses to emails can be slow and on the odd occasion, unanswered.

I came here as a new resident at Portcullis House in September 2023 - long enough to obtain a balanced picture of life here. While nowhere is perfect, Portcullis House offers an experience in the day-to-day running of the home which is very good, going a long way to achieving such an aim.

I find all of the staff are friendly and helpful and efficient and calm. The food here is of a high standard taking into account the scale of catering required. As I am here for life I am happy to be part of the community, knowing that they are doing their best for me.

Portcullis House is welcoming and with no unpleasant smells. The staff are caring, sympathetic and very understanding of the residents. It is a lovely homely atmosphere. My brother's room is light and airy and kept spotlessly clean. I am always greeted with friendliness and any concerns about my brother are sympathetically addressed. I feel happy in the knowledge that my beloved brother is being well cared for.

A welcoming friendly care home where you feel part of the family and the staff know the residents, their likes and dislikes. Carers passing an open door will always converse with residents and nothing is too much trouble. Fresh flowers appear in rooms and pet dogs accompany some staff making a welcome visit to the residents. Even lambs visited early in the years! Good food, good homely care and when a parent says "I like it here" and they do 'look after my mum so well - it is the right place' you know they are happy and content.
