I am always disappointed with communication. Mum has a hearing aid I have spoken/emailed carers, nursing staff and the manager to explain that I have had to either replace/clean/or put the battery in the right way around on every visit. The problem is supposed to be addressed but is still ongoing. Mum has £30 per week spare, she likes 'pull up' pads during the day but needs more absorbent pads in bed. The pull-ups were being used inappropriately and 3 months worth were used in 6 weeks. The problem was communication again as grass-root staff were unaware.

Reply from Chris Perks, Quality Assurance Manager at Ferndene Care Home

We are all shocked and saddened to hear of your experience with our home including the manager who was unaware you felt this way. As a company we always encourage relatives of loved ones to contact the home if they have any concerns and we apologise if you felt you couldn’t do this. I understand...

Difficult to review due to lockdown but it appears the staff have done an excellent job. Well done to all.

Reply from Chris Perks, Quality Assurance Manager at Ferndene Care Home

Many thanks for taking the time to leave us a view. We understand that it has been very difficult for families to visit their loved ones due to the lockdown restrictions however, we hope now with the easing and new visiting protocols we have put into place you are able to visit loved ones.

I have found the home clean, rooms are very nice with their own toilet and sink facilities. The room is a good size and allowed to have personal items in there, to make it homely. Staff very friendly, pleasant, well mannered and most of all, caring. Activities are put on for residents daily which keeps them happy and their mind stimulated. Hairdresser every week, once Covid19 restrictions are lifted. There is also a chiropodist and at good prices too. I would definitely recommend it.

I have already recommended to 2 friends from carers support group. I have closely monitored everything and have been looking to find a fault and can honestly say I can't find any. If I had to go in to care this would be the place I would choose. The staff have even looked after me.

Although my mum was only in Ferndene a very short time the personal care and attention to her from the team was superb. The team also supported my dad and other members of the family at mum's end of life.

Ferndene Care Home is now a wonderful care home. My mum is so well looked after, everyone who works in Ferndene Care Home is amazing, they are all very good at their jobs and that goes for everyone that works there. I can now go on holiday and not worry before the takeover of Ferndene Care Home it was bad everyone was complaining. Now its 100% I think all the staff are all so happy and always do an amazing job.

Mum was taken to Ferndene when she was very low. Her husband had just died, she couldn't stay at home but didn't accept/understand why.
She was angry and upset.
Staff, two members in particular, were fantastic and dealt with her outbursts in a calm and compassionate manner.

Due to the distance from family, (150-mile round trip), she moved after approximately 5 weeks to be closer to family.

I visit the home once a week and find most of the carers brilliant but there are a few I find don't know the meaning of care. The management have worked very hard in the last 6 months to turn the home around and I can see she's made lots of improvements, and on speaking to the manager I do think she has lots of ideas to bring the home up to great standards. The nurse in charge is an absolute godsend to the home and is always willing to listen to concerns and reassure you that every need will be met and always is when checked on.

My Mum has been at the care home for two and half years and in that time has had three Managers with latest Manager taken the post over in November of last year. Since the new Manager has come I have seen significant improvements in the home with the standard of care, only so much can be obtained in six months. The Manager cares passionately for the residents and families, her door is always open and will listen to what a family members concerns are and acts on them. I do feel that the home is turning a corner but still has some way to go before it can reach the status of excellent. I do feel that one of the nurses goes above and beyond her job role who can always be relied upon to get things done in a professional manner and a caring way.

Ferndale is quite simply the best home in this area. My sister and I visited so many and Ferndene far outshone the rest. My mother, who has mixed dementia, severe arthritis and scoliosis, is very happy there. All the staff are professional and have that personal touch. The home is managed impeccably. There are lots of activities which cater for all residents and the food is very good. I would give Ferndene five stars!

Overall Experience

When I called to view Ferndene I was greeted warmly by a bubbly member of staff who showed me round with enthusiasm. The facilities were better than I recalled when visiting residents several years earlier. The entrance area is particularly welcoming. My mother enjoyed engaging with the activities during her short stay. Unfortunately, she did not like her room and was determined that she would not allow it to be made homely. Despite the best efforts of the staff to settle her, she decided to return to her own home, where she struggles on.

Melanie Killelay
Melanie KillelayJob Title:Home managerJoined: 2024

My care journey began in April 1990 when I started my first role as a night carer. I quickly realised how much I enjoyed working in the sector and knew it was the career path I wanted to follow. I progressed into a Senior Carer role and later had the opportunity to step into management when covering for a Manager who had left. I enjoyed the challenge and decided to gain the relevant qualifications to become a Registered Manager, successfully securing the role. I have worked as a Registered Manager since then, mainly within older people’s services, with some experience in learning disability care.

I was inspired to work in care by a desire to provide high-quality support and to make a real difference to people’s lives. What I enjoy most is knowing that the care we provide can have a positive impact on residents and their well-being every day.

My key area of expertise is older people’s services, where I have built extensive experience over many years in care and management.

My approach to supporting residents, families, and my team is to be approachable and supportive at all times. I enjoy sharing my experience with my team and take pride in developing staff so they can deliver high-quality, person-centred care.

I am passionate about ensuring residents are able to live the life they choose in a safe and caring environment, and that families feel confident, involved, and part of our “care family.” I also have a strong passion for delivering high-quality end-of-life care, ensuring residents’ wishes are respected and that they and their families receive compassionate support throughout. Outside of work, I am a busy mum of two wonderful boys who keep me on my toes. I have raised them to always show respect and kindness to others, values I strongly believe in. I also believe that while life can be challenging at times, it helps build strength and resilience.
