  • The Poplars, Market Rasen
The Poplars offers compassionate, individualised residential and dementia care. Located close to the centre of the small, vibrant market town of Market Rasen in Lincolnshire, the home’s new, specialist dementia 11 bedroom household, with additional living, dining and communal areas, opened in April 2017.

The residents' well-being and comfort is the prime focus. This means that responding to their individual needs is top priority, so the home is very proud to have received an 'outstanding' rating in this category in the recent CQC (Care Quality Commission) inspection (November 2016).

Care charity and provider The Orders of St John Care Trust are respected in the care sector for a flexible range of care provision, making the most of voluntary sector contributions in order to help vulnerable adults achieve a more dignified lifestyle.

Carers respect clients from all backgrounds, support an active and fulfilling lifestyle, and a nutritious diet, while maintaining strong local links.

Since I arrived at The Poplars I have found the Poplars to be very well run and organised. The food is excellent and the staff out of their way to provide alternate choice of food if requested. Activities are frequent, inclusive and well run. Christmas activities entertainment and food were outstanding.
The staff are very good, patient, caring, attentive and friendly. My only criticism is that my room is extremely small.

My Dad uses the Poplars for restbite care. He is always well looked after by everyone. All the staff are lovely, they make him feel at home and my mind is at ease knowing he is well cared for.
Nothing is too much trouble.

My husband came into respite care here at The Poplars for 2 weeks, after a hospital discharge to recuperate and gain strength. His care has been excellent, we couldn't have asked for or found better. He was well cared for 24 hours, his meals were excellent, alongside his personal care. We are both
happy with every aspect of his stay. The staff are amazing, friendly and really made my husband and myself very welcome. We wouldn't hesitate to use this care home in the future.

Review based on two weeks respite care only.
The general atmosphere was welcoming, the accommodation was very clean and the vast majority of staff very caring and helpful.
The meals were varied and well cooked. As I was recovering from major surgery, I sometimes could not manage to eat puddings,
but was pleased to be offered simpler alternatives such as yogurt.
The only criticism of my care would be that a couple of the night staff were very slow to respond to the call when I felt very unwell, and when I went to find someone, the carer was asleep.
Reply from Anna Jennings, On Behalf of The Team at The PoplarsThank you for taking the time to write your review, and for your compliments to the kitchen team. We would also like to thank you for your feedback that falls short of the experience we would normally expect for our residents, and please be reassured that we are investigating your concern.

My father spent a few weeks here after hospital treatment. The process was made accessible to us from the outset as there was a room available at short notice, but also flexibility due to uncertainty around hospital discharge that lasted several days.
At the care home, staff were attentive, and offered
care sensitively to someone who was somewhat reluctant to be cared for. This helped dad to retain dignity and independence, aided his recuperation, while also helping us to understand his ongoing needs.
Food and environment are good. Activities helped with mobility and regaining strength and coordination - who knew that playing balloon games could be such a workout?!
The atmosphere leading up to Christmas was of course warm and friendly. And finally, discharge was also flexible due to uncertainties around getting enablement kit fitted at home.
The only downside was that the room was a bit tired, but was available short term while awaiting upgrade.

My mother was extremely fortunate to spend the last few months of her life at The Poplars. From the moment you are welcomed at the door, you can feel the level of care and professionalism of every member of staff that you meet. There is a warm, welcoming feel, and all of the residents appear content
and comfortable with the staff and well cared for. Staff went above and beyond to ensure my mother enjoyed her final birthday, and when it came to the final stages of her life, they all excelled in the care and support that they offered not only to my mother but to myself and her close friend. The whole team should be proud of the positive effect they have on so many people, thank you.

I needed to report that my sister had been upset by some ‘noisy’ people who she thought had come to see her. She has dementia so I spoke to the Home Manager (by email) who immediately responded and said a large group had visited today and she would ensure a smaller group would visit next time. I am
so reassured by her caring and concerned attitude and her immediate action. The staff at The Poplars are so helpful, kind and reassuring and my sister is very happy and well looked after. Thank you.

Christmas was always going to be difficult as I am now on my own, my husband has been a resident for over a year and suffers with dementia, but being at the home made it as good as it could be.
The home was beautifully decorated by the staff and the residents. Father Christmas came with personalised
gifts. Christmas dinner was lovely.
Had a lovely time with my husband, staff and other residents who I have come to know, thank you.

The level of care, compassion and professionalism demonstrated by the entire team was truly remarkable.
Quality of care: exceeded our expectations. They tailored their services to meet my mother's specific needs as her dementia progressed.
Support and communication: staff consistently communicated
with us. This transparency gave us peace of mind.
Well-being and dignity: they ensured that her emotional and physical well-being were a top priority.
Health and safety: reassured us that my mother was in a secure and well-maintained environment.
Emotional support: went above and beyond in offering emotional support to both my mother and our family.
I know many of the carers work extremely long hours but their team of caregivers not only took care of her physical needs but also provided companionship and emotional comfort at all times during their shifts; thank you to you all for playing a vital role in making my mother's final days as comfortable and dignified as possible.

My mother sadly passed away at The Poplars in October 2023, having spent the last year of her life as a resident. With Mum’s mental and physical health deteriorating through this period, due to Alzheimer’s disease, she was cared for with love and compassion by the many staff at The Poplars who came
into daily contact with her. Behavioural changes caused by Mum’s illness meant that at times she was difficult to look after but as a family, we were always impressed by the skill and good humour with which the carers treated her and cared for her. When Mum finally died, the support provided by the duty staff at The Poplars was simply exemplary - I can’t thank those who were present enough. I recommend The Poplars as a care home without reservation - the staff are caring and skilled and the home is run to the highest standards by an experienced management team.

Mum has been a resident at The Poplars for many years so I have gained experience of all aspects of ‘home life’.
Her initial worries and fears at her change of circumstances have been managed with kindness, caring, professionalism and good humour. From the manager to the housekeeping staff, there is
a great team spirit and the well-being of each resident is handled with specific regard to that resident's needs. Activities are scheduled to engage and promote independence where possible. December is a month that Mum usually finds quite challenging. The decorations, the different look to the lounges with the trees and lights and the atmosphere of jolly celebration can be overwhelming for residents with dementia but this year she was settled and enjoyed the music and the interactions with her carers. I don’t feel that she could be better cared for at any other home and really appreciate the low turnover of staff so she has familiar faces every day. Thanks to the manager, you’re a positive force!

More than a month has passed since my aunt died at The Poplars, Market Rasen. I was deeply touched by how much love and care was shown to her by the staff. In those last few days, so many popped in to say goodbye and to share happy memories. They took wonderful care of me too, with sandwiches and never-ending
cups of tea. All I had to concentrate on was being with my aunt, everything else was seamlessly looked after. It was a sad time, but the experience also renewed my faith in the kindness of people. Thank you.

I would like to say how helpful all the staff at The Poplars were when my son-in-law died from a serious cancer. They all seemed to understand everything that I was experiencing and I was very appreciative of their comfort both during his illness and especially after he passed away and also at the time
of the funeral. This was also appreciated by my daughter and her family. This is a very happy care home, with plenty of activities to keep us going and the freedom to take part if we want to.

My wife suffers from Parkinson's Disease and had a stay in the Poplars in July/August 2020. She has since been at home with me as her sole carer, however in July 2021, her Parkinson's came back and she was unable to walk or move. In desperation, I contacted the Poplars, regarding getting my wife in
for some respite care. They were brilliant, the lady in Admin, confirmed immediately that they had a room for her and she could be admitted as soon as I could get her to the home. She had wonderful care from all the staff, who were like old friends from her last visit. We could not fault any area of my wife's care. The home is well managed and maintained, the food is very good, even with fish and chips in paper from the local 'Chippy' on a Friday. The Poplars has a well deserved, high reputation in the town. I cannot thank all the staff enough for the way they looked after my wife, in our time of need and would have no hesitation in recommending this Care Home to anyone who is looking for one.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.359)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.359) out of 10 for The Poplars is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.777 for The Poplars is calculated as follows: ( (83 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 103 Ratings = 4.777
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.582 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Poplars is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.7
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 51 registered maximum number of service users is 10.2. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 10.2 = 0.882
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2026

I've worked in the caring industry for over 18 years, in a wide range of sectors. I have experience in working with individuals with mental health, learning disabilities, and elderly care.

I started my career as a care assistant and worked my way up to home manager. Alongside that, I have also achieved my level 2 and 3 in health and social care, and have more recently completed my level 4 lead practitioner qualification. Furthermore, I enjoy learning and developing my skills, and I am always keen to do additional training.

I chose to work in the care sector, as I particularly enjoy working with the elderly. I love hearing their stories, sharing a moment of reminiscence, or even having a good old dance. Likewise, I also enjoy problem-solving and ensuring that, as a team, we are delivering and striving for high-quality care.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and spoiling my grandchildren is my favourite thing to do. We enjoy going to the cinema, spending time on the beach, or travelling further afield to visit family.

I'm often found reading when at home, as it helps me to unwind, and my favourite genre is a good crime novel, which keeps me engaged and hooked on a twist. I also enjoy true stories of any kind and getting lost in the story.
