9.5 The Poplars has a Review Score of 9.5 (9.488)

The Review Score of 9.5 (maximum of 10) for The Poplars is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 15 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for The Poplars in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.704 for The Poplars is calculated as follows: ( (131 Excellents x 5) + (43 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 179 Ratings = 4.704

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

The 4.784 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Poplars is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 10.2 positive Reviews (51 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 8 Reviews ÷ 10.2 Target = 0.784

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

The care I received during my week's stay was nothing short of outstanding. Everyone even down to the handyman was friendly and welcoming. The care staff are genuine and made me feel very welcome, safe and nothing was too much trouble. They tended to my every need and helped back on my feet following a fall.
Myself and my husband who was visiting on one particular afternoon enjoyed some entertainment organised by the activities lady. My husband commented that you would need to go far to match the afternoon as it was superb. Staff members got up and danced and the singer was brilliant.
I have never had to go into respite before but I know if I had to again then it would be The Poplars I would choose. I couldn't thank them enough. Hats off to all at The Poplars, they are truly amazing. THANK YOU.

I had my sister in this home for 7 years, having brought her down from Scotland until she passed away. The staff looked after her with dignity all the time.
I feel the home needs a gardener to finish the place off and parking more for visitors and staff. It's kept tidy and smart, I know there is building that's been going on but it will be a lot smarter a year ago, we know the place but strangers don't.

Maxine Kennedy, Home Manager at The Poplars responded to this review on 21 Jul 2017:

Thank you for taking the time to submit a review. I am happy to advise that as part of our planned maintenance programme we are currently working on a proposed plan to increase the car parking from 15-27 spaces. The plan also includes for bark mulch and low-level planting to improve the appearance and tidiness our grounds.

My mum has lived at The Poplars for nearly a year. She is very well looked after in terms of her own cleanliness/hygiene, her rooms cleanliness, the quality of the food served and the staff who care for her.
The Poplars is very well managed and the carers are always polite, respectful and well turned out. The provision of entertainment, hairdresser, chiropodist district nurse and trips out is excellent. All of the staff including the caretaker, laundry/housekeeping and catering are excellent.

My mother recently moved into the new wing at the home. My wife and I were impressed with the care taken to ascertain her needs and requirements. All the staff seem very friendly and supportive.
The quality and facilities in the new wing are excellent.
So we consider my mum is in a very safe and secure place, which is meeting her needs.

I have been impressed by the friendliness of every one of the staff, and by their professionalism. Nothing is too much trouble for them. The Home Manager in particular has been extremely helpful whenever I have had a query or a question. I have not been around at mealtimes or when they are carrying out personal care for my dad so cannot comment. However, from what I have witnessed, for example when I asked if someone could bathe dad's eyes, this was done promptly.
During my career in health care I visited many care homes. In my opinion the overall standard of care, professionalism and friendliness of The Poplars puts it up there with the best.

My mum received outstanding care in what sadly provided to be the last month of her life. At The Poplars, she was treated as a person, not a case and everything was done to meet her wishes and ensure her comfort.
The manager showed great empathy both with mum and with my sister/me as next of kin, even visiting us in hospital.

I have been very impressed by this care home. There are so many bad reports about homes but I have nothing but praise for this establishment. Mum's room is small but sufficient to manoeuvre and clean and tidy. It is well furnished and modern. My main praise is for the staff team - from top to toe - I hesitate to say 'bottom' because all team members work very well together to create a lovely caring, supportive and safe environment for residents. Mealtimes are sociable and staff take care to make sure everyone's needs are catered for. Overall a not unpleasant experience for Mum.

Staff- excellent (professional, always kind)
Food- excellent
Gardens- excellent
Room- sufficient. Not having dementia but having lung problems, 24hr heating and locked windows was a big problem. Shame no en-suite bathroom!
Bathroom facilities- very clean.

Mum has been at The Poplars since March and has benefited greatly with the attention and care she gets, and has gone up 2 sizes which isn't a bad thing! Just before Christmas she developed a chest infection and then pneumonia and had to stay in hospital for 4 days. The staff were all very supportive during this time as were the rest of her new 'family' and it was lovely to see how pleased everyone was to see her when she came home on Christmas Eve. obviously she wasn't well enough to go to our usual family gathering but my brother and I went in the morning to the Christmas spirit well and truly flowing! There was a lovely family atmosphere and everyone was offered a tipple and hot mince-pie. Santa handed out presents and all the staff including some not on duty joined in the festivities. I was able to have lunch with Mum and friends before leaving in the afternoon.
I would also like to say how impressed I was with the time and effort that went into decorating the lounges and other areas, and all the social events that went on in the run up to both Christmas and New Year! It really did feel like home!

-The staff are always willing and happy to discuss the health and welfare of my mother.
-They have a real concern that she is comfortable, happy, confident within her abilities and feels cared for.
-The staff work hard to provide a variety (with trips out and indoor activities) and interest for the residents and my mother is enjoying these.
-She is recognised as an individual with a previous life, interests and a family.

When I last saw my mother 6 months ago she was in a very confused and depressed mental state following a stroke. This visit, from where I live, I found her cheerful, alert and much more sociable than I have seen her in decades. I credit the amazingly kind, sensitive staff of Poplars for this turnaround and particularly the Manager, who is clearly a superior leader and sets a tone of humor, compassion and encouragement for residents to be their best, within the confines of their physical and mental abilities. My mother feels safe, cared for as a person and able to contribute to the welfare of others not as capable as her. Thank you to the Manager and all the staff.

The staff at The Poplars have looked after my father for the past 1yr 10months, he has been taken care with 1st class service, caring and respect despite being in the later stages of Alzheimer's. During the last week of my father's life the family had to make a decision to move him or leave him where he lived at The Poplars. We chose to keep him in The Poplars. All the staff kept us informed about his health, they also cared for the family and treated him with respect during his time. I am very grateful I was informed of his deterioration and this enabled our family to be with dad as he passed away. They also cared for our needs.
