  • Westerley Christian Care Home, Woodhall Spa
Westerley Woodhall had a major refurbishment in March 2024, adding three additional rooms, each equipped with en-suite bathrooms with showers and finished to an exceptional standard.

The Broadway, Woodhall Spa is home to Westerley Christian Care Home. Woodhall Spa is a large village located on the Southern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. It is built in and surrounded by trees which shelter it from East coast winds. Woodhall Spa is midway between Lincoln, with its old Cathedral, Roman ruins and modern shopping centre and Boston, an attractive market town. Skegness and the East Coast are only a short journey away.

Residents are actively encouraged to pursue their own hobbies and interests, both within the home and locally. Residents are encouraged to share in daily family prayers, where possible, but this is not obligatory. Prayers are held each weekday in the mornings and Holy Communion is celebrated monthly.

All rooms are fitted with a call bell and are equipped to recognised standards for residents living with a disability. Residents rooms come with telephones included in the fees and all rooms are equipped with a TV aerial socket and broadband ports, in addition to Wi-Fi available around the home.

Accommodation is provided in single en-suite rooms, however there are 2 double room available for married couples. Residents rooms are located on the ground, first and second floors, all accessible by passenger lift. Westerley provides a spacious dining room and two lounges, one of which has television facilities, and is fitted with a loop system for those with hearing difficulties. The other is a sun lounge, which has a southerly aspect and views over the gardens.

Residents can enjoy the extensive, sheltered gardens, offering the opportunity for relaxation and lawn games.

I visit the home on a regular basis. I find the staff to always be very friendly and welcoming, as well as incredibly helpful and supportive. The managers and the staff have improved this home through their hard work and a love of their vocation, with all the staff seeming to work well and supportively
together. The residents are always happy and are well cared for both collectively and individually in every way, and always speak very highly of the care and support that they are given. I absolutely love the home for its character, cleanliness and layout, as well as the many activities that are provided for the residents, from parties, celebrations, trips, and visits. I am also encouraged by its Christian ethos with devotions every day for the residents providing an important support for those no longer able to go to church.
As and when I reach old age it would be my first choice home from all the that homes I visit. I would recommend this home to everyone.

Westerley is a really homely care home. The carers work very hard and have shown nothing but kindness towards my mum. I am a frequent visitor and have seen first-hand the respectful care they offer to all.
New managers have made positive enhancements and have always answered any questions I have in
an honest and transparent way.
I feel the whole Westerley team truly care for my mum.

Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5
My experience of this home is limited to a weeks respite care but I am familiar with two other care homes so can make a relative assessment. The strength of this home is that the staff are the best caring team I have encountered and the new managers really dedicated to improvements all round following
on advice CQC report 2 years or so ago. My disappointment lasted to the other residents, a dozen or so very old ladies wo are no longer able (or liking) to socialise, but this appears to be fairly typical of care homes these days. Room facilities, meals and activities are thoughtfully planned and changes remarkably low. The Christian origins of this home continue to be important.
Reply from Simon Lee, CEO at Westerley Christian Care Home

Many thanks for your review and kind words for the caring nature of our home and staff. I am pleased that the positive changes have been recognised since the previous CQC rating some time ago and that the home now has a CQC 'Good' rating. We enjoyed having you stay with us and hope that if you need further respite in future you would like to come back.

Following the change of management, the visit seemed to have a better feel/connection with us. It seemed that the home was better organised, however, my mother has expressed she is not happy about being put to bed so late, so maybe some improvement here would help. The present manager seems to be more
on the ball with getting things sorted for the residents.

I appreciate the daily devotions greatly, also the activities. It is a shame so many residents are deaf, normal conversation, especially at meals is impossible.
Lunch, the main meal of the day, is unable to be properly enjoyed in my case, one at my table grumbles and moans as she eats. Another with
eyes closed mainly 'eats' precariously, should residents like these be sat apart.

My mother, who is frail, reserved, dementia and anxiety sufferer has lived at Westerley for one year. We have found management, carers and all assistants helpful and incredibly kind and supportive and my mother's individual needs are met. I feel mother would not be cared for better or be happier anywhere
else. The atmosphere of Westerley is friendly and welcoming and to visit at any time is a bonus. Thank you Westerley.

The room is spacious and very home like with personal belongings on display. It certainly doesn’t feel like a care home but rather more personal. The carers could not be more ‘caring’. They work tirelessly to make sure life is as comfortable as possible. They are always busy but always find time to
have a chat and a laugh. Their dedication to the job is incredible. The facilities and activities available are comprehensive and everyone is made aware of what activities are available and encouraged to become involved especially keep fit exercises which can be standing or sitting and as involved as you want.
I am bedbound but still encouraged to move limbs where possible and not lie static in one position for long. In conclusion, the Home is not what I expected, it is comfortable, friendly and now feels like home.

I spent four weeks in respite care following a fall at home. The staff at every level were kind and thoughtful and the general atmosphere at the home was very welcoming. I found the morning session of 'devotion' a lovely start to the day. That was followed by a morning session in the activities room
which gave mental and physical exercise and also gave an opportunity to integrate with other residents, which was very beneficial.

I really cannot speak highly enough of Westerley. My relative has been living there for just over three years. She is thriving in the care and attention she receives and is stronger and happier than when she first went in there from hospital, following a stroke. The facilities are ideal and homely.
All the staff are amazing and do all they can to help, often going over and above to do what they can. Everyone is treated as an individual.

My father has been in Westerley for 5 years this August. The care given to him has been of a very high standard. We have seen him deteriorate over the years and they have altered his care accordingly, he has become more demanding but they have given it with good grace, even when under severe pressure
due to the ongoing Covid pandemic. To manage to keep all of the residents to be Covid free throughout should be applauded, my father had a fall and unfortunately had to be checked over at Lincoln County, having been treated very quickly he was then stuck there for hours waiting for transport, on arrival back he was quarantined (to not scare the residents, was his remark) tested and freed after a negative test. My father thoroughly enjoys the activities organised by the home (so much so if I happen to ring before they have finished he tells me to ring back!) and used to enjoy their trips to The Tea House, sadly not to be at the moment.

Mum has been in a care home for three years with respite before then for three years. She is in her 98th year. Mum has dementia but now in bed continually, nursing care is amazing. I am a retired health professional and have been in many units. This is the best caring attitude, very personal.

After the initial settling in period, my mother is extremely happy in Westerley. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Residents have a very good quality of life; they have a choice about their care. The meals are very good. There are activities every weekday morning, and residents are able to
be taken to the local Chapel; if they wish to attend. Devotions are held every weekday morning before activities begin; residents are free to choose if they want to attend.

The management and staff are excellent and all the accommodation is extremely clean and always free from odours often associated with many homes. My mother-in-law relishes daily devotions and the opportunity to visit the local chapel. She is happy, well-fed, warm and enjoys the companionship and calls
it her home.

The moment I stepped into Westerley Christian Care Home I felt like I had been given a warm hug. It was Christmas Eve, yes Christmas Eve, when I phoned to view the home. I was told that I was welcome at any time, exactly what an emotional and anxious niece wanted to hear. This last Saturday 22nd February
my aunt said how very happy she was and it was the best decision she had made in a long time. I thought I had chosen well on her behalf and my husband and I have not been disappointed. Thank you to the management and each and every staff member.

My Mother has been at Westerley for the last year. When she first arrived, she was very unwell, but with the home’s good care; her health is more stable and Mummy now feels very settled and loved in the home.
I visit most days, often bringing our little dog and we are both made extremely welcome -
the home is well run, peaceful and the staff, who are very kind, always let me know quickly if there are any concerns.
The food is excellent, Mummy enjoys all her meals, and the kitchen staff diligently cater for Mummy’s gluten allergy.
The home’s Christian ethos is important to Mummy, who though not well enough now to get to devotions, is always included in Holy Communion.
Last Spring/Summer Mummy and I enjoyed gentle strolls in the garden.
I am very thankful that Mummy is being cared for by the staff at Westerley Christian Care Home.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.710)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.710) out of 10 for Westerley Christian Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.475 for Westerley Christian Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (34 Excellents x 5) + (19 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 59 Ratings = 4.475
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.235 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Westerley Christian Care Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 34 registered maximum number of service users is 6.8. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 6.8 = 0.735
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
