The Herons provides residential, dementia and short-stay care for up to 39 residents in a peaceful cul-de-sac setting in Toton, near Nottingham. Originally opened by the Duke of Gloucester and now part of the MHA family, the home is known for its friendly community feel, close links with local neighbours and its calm, homely atmosphere.

Bedrooms are en-suite and can be personalised to help residents feel settled and at ease. The garden is a cherished part of life at The Herons, with raised planters, accessible paths, and a sunny patio just outside the dining room—perfect for a morning cuppa or summer gathering.

Following a positive and highly praising recommendation of The Herons, I felt confident that the home and its staff would meet my father's changing needs. How blessed and relieved I feel that he has now become a permanent resident. A weight has been lifted from my shoulders knowing that he is safe,
happy, and well. When I visit I am pleased to see that my dad has company, is brighter, and stimulated by the varied planned activities. After living at the home for 2 months he is more settled than I had anticipated, always clean, smartly dressed, and certainly very well fed. Thank you to every member of the staff team who make The Herons such a happy place to be.

My father's recent respite stay led to him becoming a permanent resident. He has settled well and formed friendships. I love the fact that I am able to visit at any time. The staff are always warm and welcoming. I follow social media posts which enable me to see the great variety of fun activities on
offer.
Events provide an opportunity to gather with others e.g. the summer fair and the upcoming scarecrow festival. My father is treated with respect and love and I trust those who have chosen to care for him.

It seems as though I've been here forever. I think that my room is ideal. I suppose I'm lucky to have a ground floor room with an open outlook. I think the staff are very caring without being overpowering. The meals are of a good quality and sufficient in content to satisfy my appetite. The activities
have been chosen very sensibly to accord with people's ailments and limitations. The staff and other residents are of a friendly nature and this helped me settle very quickly into the environment provided.

We cannot thank The Herons enough for the excellent care that they provided for my mum, who lived at the home for nearly three years. The staff and residents become one big family, creating a positive and upbeat atmosphere. The end-of-life care my mum received in particular was more than we ever could
have hoped for; she was shown such love, dignity and affection. We would fully recommend The Herons to anyone who has a loved one in need of care.

I'm sorry it's taken a while to write this review; it's inexcusable because the care my mum received in the final months of her life was fantastic. From the manager through to every single staff member, caring for the residents is their absolute priority. I really can't praise The Herons enough. Most

Mum was only a resident in The Herons Care Home for just over a month during which time all the staff involved with looking after her were kind and attentive. When she passed away the staff were equally kind to us as a family. We will always be grateful for making her last few weeks as comfortable as

I have been very pleased with the care of the residents and the activities held to engage the residents mentally and physically. The volunteers have been particularly good with regard to the recent death of the Queen. The rooms are fabulous, meals are of a good standard and my father is always very
smart and clean looking.

Our aunt was a resident at The Herons for over two years. We spent some time looking at care homes before deciding on The Herons and never regretted our decision. The staff were always friendly and attentive, the home was kept clean and the food was of good quality. There was a variety of activities
and all opportunities for special events were celebrated. Our aunt chose not to take part in many of the daily activities but was always given the opportunity and she enjoyed her interaction with many of the staff. We were pleased with the way the home managed the covid situation ensuring adequate supplies of PPE and their attempts to protect the residents as well as possible. It was unfortunate that some residents did contract the virus but we appreciate it was a very difficult time for the staff to manage. Our aunt became ill and it was obvious that she had limited days to live during restricted visiting times. The staff allowed close family to visit for however long they wanted.

My mother-in-law was a resident at The Herons for 16 months until her death in February 2021. The staff did a wonderful job of helping her to cope with increasing infirmity and encouraging her independence which was really important to her and to us. She enjoyed doing a whole range of activities and
particularly appreciated the weekly church services. Her care always felt like teamwork between ourselves and the staff with her needs and wishes kept front and centre. During the lockdown, the staff went above and beyond to keep residents safe and keep their spirits up. Lockdown birthdays were still made special and a huge effort went into helping family and friends to stay in touch. The end-of-life care they provided was exceptional, she was looked after with dignity, professionalism and most importantly, a great deal of love. We were able to make visits and were also very well supported by that same love and care. We could not have asked for more and think that The Herons is a really exceptional care home.

My Dad lived at The Herons for 2 years, and he was extremely well cared for the whole time until he passed away last month.
The whole team are a credit to MHA, from the maintenance man to the carers to the management team. I got to know quite a few of the staff and they all gave me a friendly welcome
when I visited before the lockdown. Then during the lockdown, the communication from the team in the office is brilliant, they update the families on all the activities they are putting on for the residents, and send regular emails about any changes that are being put in place to ensure the care is maintained at the same high level.
The team give a real sense of being a family, nothing is too much trouble for their residents. And this has continued over the last few months even when they have been under a lot of pressure. They work very hard to make sure everyone is safe.
I can't thank them enough for the care they gave to my Dad.

Mum had dementia and came to live at The Herons just before lockdown. We, therefore, could not visit, but the home kept us up to date and we were able to speak to her on the phone at any time. Once visits were allowed, we were looked after wonderfully. By this time Mum was very poorly but was always
kept comfortable and cared for. Nothing was too much trouble. Sadly Mum passed away of old age. She could not have had better care and was always valued. As relatives, we were treated with compassion by all staff. The manager is an excellent manager. I have recommended The Herons to a friend, whose mother has moved in and is really enjoying the company and activities.

We viewed several care homes before selecting The Herons for an elderly relative. She came in for respite care and when the respite care period ended in August last year, she asked if she could stay and has been a resident here for nearly a year. The staff are caring and regularly go the extra mile
to help the residents and to make them both comfortable and happy. Although residents can choose to stay in their rooms, there is a full programme of activities run by the staff and several rooms where residents can socialise. The home is clean and our relative enjoys the food. The home is owned and run by Methodist Homes for the Aged. This is a Methodist charity and it has been apparent that the home is run for the benefit of the residents with no requirement to make a profit. This was demonstrated by the approach they took in the coronavirus outbreak. When other homes were complaining about the cost of PPE, The Herons had sufficient stock.

We were very impressed as a family by the care and compassion shown by The Herons, not only to my dad but to my sister and I as his life drew to a close.

From the outset, it is easy to see that The Herons is a first-class care home with excellent all-round facilities. However, the facilities alone do not make this the wonderful place that it is. This is down to the super-dedicated staff with their friendly, outstanding and caring manner. From our Dad
entering the home, late last year, to his passing away last month, we found the staff totally supportive of both him and our family. Their care for both Dad and the family was above and beyond and made his passing so much easier.

I can't thank everyone at The Herons enough for the loving kindness they showed mum. When mum was dying the care they showed was amazing. Mum died with dignity and surrounded by love. Money can't buy that dedication. Thank you all and God bless you. She called The Herons her home.

Loren

Loren Rosebery

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2018

Loren Rosebery is the Home Manager at MHA The Herons and has been part of the MHA family since 2018. After five years as Deputy Manager at Moorland House, Loren took on the role of Home Manager and, in 2024, brought her experience and passion for care to The Herons.


With a career in care spanning over 15 years, Loren began as a domiciliary care assistant before progressing through roles in assisted living, home care management, and staff training. Although she spent time delivering qualifications in Health and Social Care, she soon realised her heart remained in hands-on residential care. She completed her Level 5 Diploma in Health and Social Care Management in 2017 and plans to further her development with a Level 7 qualification.


Loren is passionate about creating a home where residents are supported to live later life well through high-quality, person-centred care delivered with dignity, respect, and warmth. For Loren, managing a home is about more than overseeing care—it’s about nurturing an environment where people feel safe, valued, and truly part of a family.
