Great facilities, but more importantly, what fabulous staff - friendly, caring, considerate and thoughtful. Mum was happy and well cared for, treated as a friend and with courtesy and respect. We can't thank you enough.

My mum was in The Herons for over ten years. In that time she was very well looked after - she had suffered a stroke so needed some help.
In all aspects of caring for her, The Herons did a really good job. Meal, wellbeing, social activities were all cared for.
Security is a concern, and whilst at
The Herons, I always knew my Mum was in a safe and secure environment.
Reply from Jennifer Martindale, Home Manager at The HeronsThank you for your lovely review of The Herons. It was a pleasure to look after your Mum who enjoyed joining in activities and also played the piano for our church services. It means a lot to the staff team at The Herons to read such a lovely review.

This is the second time I have been involved with placing a family member at The Herons and both at fairly short notice. On this occasion, my mother-in-law was looking for urgent respite care and the home was able to assist almost immediately, even accepting her into the evening on a Friday. As we live
in Canada we were enormously relieved to know that our relative is being looked after in a happy and caring environment while we are out of the country. The staff are so friendly and helpful at all levels, from the manager down and nothing is too much trouble. The food is very well received by my mother-in-law, which is always a good sign. There are many daily activities which are changed up to maintain variety. Laundry seems to be done and returned to the rightful owner every weekday (I know from other experience it can be a lottery as to whose clothes you might get). They also bring in regular assistance like a manicurist, chiropodist and hairdresser. I cannot speak too highly of them.
Reply from Jennifer Martindale, Home Manager at The HeronsThank you for your lovely review. At The Herons, we are always happy to help whenever possible. We have a lovely team who all contribute to help our residents feel at home when they arrive and throughout their stay.

My husband goes to The Herons while I have respite from my caring.
He always goes happily.
The staff are very kind and understand his needs.
He was recently there for a week for me to have respite and when he came home he was happy and told me all that he had been doing.
I then, this week, fell
ill and had to go to hospital urgently.
I phoned the home who said they would do anything to help.
My husband went back, and they told me not to worry and it didn't matter how long he would need to stay.
They offered to fetch him and then when he came home they brought him back.
Wonderful care home and staff.
Reply from Jennifer Martindale, Home Manager at The HeronsI am really pleased that your husband has enjoyed his stay at The Herons and that we were able to be of assistance to you.

At The Herons we take pride in the care and support we give to residents regardless of their length of stay with us. To receive a review such as this gives us great pleasure. We support the residents to remain as independent as possible whilst assisting when needed.

I have 2 aged aunts living in The Herons who have been there 9 and 3 years respectively.

Cleanliness: the home is well maintained and always kept to a very high standard, both in the individual rooms and in the restaurant and public rooms.

Food: Of a very high standard and variety.

Care: Excellent

individual and collective care.

Communication: Now that there is a 'front of house' communication with the home is much better.

Staff: Always friendly and willing to help both residents and relatives alike.

My mother has been at The Herons for 6 years and in that time, she has been very well looked after. Over time, her faculties have decreased so her level of care has increased. The staff at the home treat her as a family member, joking with her and even when she runs out of things eg. sweets, buy them
for her out of their own money. Whenever I visit, I am always made welcome. The communication with the home is very good.

In conclusion, I am very impressed with the facilities and staff and would not consider ever moving my mum to another care home.

Reply from Jennifer Martindale, Home Manager at The HeronsThe staff team at The Herons always strives to produce a high standard of care and create a family atmosphere. We would like to thank you for your wonderful comments, I will share them with all the staff team at The Herons.

My mother stayed at The Herons for the last twenty months of her life. She was very happy and so appreciative of all the love, care, kindness and friendliness of the staff. They made her feel very much at home. She had a lovely room with an en-suite bathroom. The lounge and dining room are very pleasant.
As my mother grew increasingly frail, the staff attended very well to her growing needs. There was a very good liaison with the local Doctor's surgery and the community nurse. The chaplain visited regularly and even made a visit to the hospital when my mother was very ill. My mother enjoyed the activities. These helped her keep active and socialise with others. The staff made a very big effort in the summer to put on a "Day At the Seaside" creating a fun and happy atmosphere. Similarly, in the Christmas season, there were some very enjoyable celebratory moments. The garden is very pleasant with a little summer-house and my mother loved going around the garden in her wheel-chair.
Reply from Jennifer Martindale, Home Manager at The HeronsThank you very much for your wonderful comments about The Herons staff. I have passed on your comments to all the staff. We would all like to say it was a pleasure to help your Mum whilst in our care over the last twenty months. The team at The Herons takes great pride in the standard of care and support we give to our residents.

Staff/carers patient, kind, helpful, encouraging and always find time to talk/listen. Mum visited friends before she became a resident. Residents have their own things, eg furniture to make it feel like home. Rooms kept clean and air throughout the Home smells clean and fresh. If they don't want the
meal of the day they will be found an alternative that they would like. Any queries are answered in the office if they don't know they get back to you. Regular activities each week (exercises, entertainment, sing-a-longs, quizzes and more). Residents get monthly Newsletter with times and dates and newsy information. Regular meetings for anyone who do/don't like something and they do their best to put it right. Can't believe Herons only got "Good" rating. I know lot of older people who live locally that Herons will be their first choice if/when they need a Home.
Reply from Jenny Martindale, Home Manager at The HeronsThank you very much for your lovely comments about The Herons. It is always lovely to hear positive comments from family and friends of residents which always makes the staff feel appreciated for the excellent work that they do.

Our family cannot praise and thank you enough for the care shown to my 98-year-old father in his final days.
Throughout his stay there approximately 10 months, he was very well looked after in a spotlessly clean and comfortable surroundings. During his final days, he was treated with dignity and loving
care until he slipped peacefully away. We couldn't have asked for anything more.

MHA has a great strength in it's staff. They are friendly, attentive and competent and make efforts to provide a comfortable and supportive environment. There is clearly a great deal of pressure on them as the home is essentially understaffed. Nonetheless they maintain a positive attitude and treat residents
with care and consideration. As a purpose-built facility, it provides a good standard of accommodation and communal areas. Overall I am very satisfied and believe my mother has a good quality of life.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.803)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.803) out of 10 for The Herons is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.803 for The Herons is calculated as follows: ( (189 Excellents x 5) + (42 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 233 Ratings = 4.803
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Herons is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 39 registered maximum number of service users is 7.8, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Loren Rosebery is the Home Manager at MHA The Herons and has been part of the MHA family since 2018. After five years as Deputy Manager at Moorland House, Loren took on the role of Home Manager and, in 2024, brought her experience and passion for care to The Herons.

With a career in care spanning over 15 years, Loren began as a domiciliary care assistant before progressing through roles in assisted living, home care management, and staff training. Although she spent time delivering qualifications in Health and Social Care, she soon realised her heart remained in hands-on residential care. She completed her Level 5 Diploma in Health and Social Care Management in 2017 and plans to further her development with a Level 7 qualification.

Loren is passionate about creating a home where residents are supported to live later life well through high-quality, person-centred care delivered with dignity, respect, and warmth. For Loren, managing a home is about more than overseeing care—it’s about nurturing an environment where people feel safe, valued, and truly part of a family.

At The Herons, Loren leads a dedicated team that builds genuine relationships with residents and their loved ones. Together, they foster a homely, welcoming atmosphere where every individual is known for who they are—not just for their care needs, but for what matters most to them.
