On arrival we were warmly welcomed by the manager and his staff. A tour of the home was given, we were also introduced to catering and laundry staff. It certainly gave us a feeling that this home included ALL members of staff. My brother was treated with kindness and we, as a family, were assured on
numerous occasions that all his complex needs would be professionally catered for. On numerous visits he has been clean, well dressed and has told me he really enjoys the food/drinks/social activities and it is 'like a hotel'. Such comments after his previous experiences has only reinforced the fact that we, as a family, made the right decision in choosing Carmel Lodge as he 'forever home'.
Reply from Faye Archer, Regional Director at Carmel Lodge Care Home

My husband was a resident at Carmel Lodge Care Home from 21.06.2024 until his death on 13.12.2024. From the day he arrived the staff treated him with great respect, dignity, interest and humour. After having 3 weeks in hospital, he improved dramatically, mentally and physically under their care. Sadly
at the beginning of December he had another major vascular incident. Their palliative end of life care was amazing, going above and beyond what was necessary. My heartfelt thanks go to the manager and all his staff for ensuring my husbands end of life was peaceful and dignified. Thank you.

My mother is very settled at the home and benefits from the routine and calm, caring help. This has helped her anxiety. The staff are very competent and caring. This includes the ancillary staff. I am kept informed appropriately as to my mother's health and care needs and what is happening in the home.
There are opportunities for her to have her hair done, which she appreciates and other services such as chiropody and eye testing. The activities offered are entertaining in part for her - she is unlikely due to her condition and nature to join in all these.

I visit my Mother on a weekly basis and have always found her to be clean and content, more importantly, she had her own clothes on.

Although my husband has only been a resident for a short time, I have been very pleased with the care and attention he has received from the lovely, sensitive staff. The overall ethos stems from the excellent manager and her co-manager. This is reflected throughout all aspects of the care home. Because
of this I can now relax, knowing he is in capable and experienced care.

My Mother is cared for with dignity and understanding. Good range of activities and care taken to ensure diet and fluid intake monitored. Wonderful staff.

My father-in-law is a resident at the above care home, the home is very welcoming, clean, and secure. It was a sad day for all the family when we had to make the heartbreaking decision to place him in a home, but it was not healthy and from a safeguarding issue to have him at home with the mother-in-law
as they both had different needs. The staff are friendly, professional, courteous, informative, and genuinely care for all in their care. I would like to extend my gratitude and thanks for looking after our father-in-law so well and he looks happy and content.

My mother has had two falls in as many months - should softer flooring be installed to prevent this?
Overall, 80% of the staff are very caring and look after my mother very well. They are all very patient and the younger members of staff are very good.

The home itself is very good and staff are wonderful, easy to speak to and just get along with, from reception and upwards. I think they try their best to help residents as best they can, even when it seems they're short-staffed you can see that at times. We have all gone through difficult times, like
Covid, and I thought all staff showed their conviction to their work.

My father has been treated with the utmost kindness and respect since he moved into the home. He settled in quickly and seemed happy and settled from the start. The staff are all very caring and compassionate and the overall standard of care is excellent. He really seems to enjoy the companionship of
the other residents, often believing that he is on holiday - which can only be a good thing! I am especially grateful to the deputy matron, who goes above and beyond in her care. Thank you.

Made to feel welcome by all staff. You can feel the atmosphere as soon as you walk in the place, it's friendly and relaxing somehow at the same time. Nothing seems too much trouble from top to bottom and Mum looks good every time I visit! Care, food, etc. are excellent.

On our diamond anniversary, the staff at Carmel Lodge Care Home went to the trouble of entertaining my husband, myself and my sister to a tasting lunch. There were flowers, balloons etc.
But it was the kindness shown which pleased me. The staff are wonderful, all of them.

Being asked to comment on things I don't know about e.g. food and drink, activities.
Surprised the home does not have decaffeinated tea and coffee, caffeine is a stimulant and with thirty-six residents at least some of them will react badly to the caffeine. I personally cannot get to sleep until 2
or 3 am if I have caffeine. I use supermarket decaffeinated tea bags.
Reply from Jackie Hirst, Marketing at Carmel Lodge Care Home

Thank you for your feedback, going forward we will ensure decaffeinated tea bags are ordered.

Carmel Lodge Care Home is a well-run home, clean and had a calming atmosphere even in these strange times with the pandemic.
The staff have continued to treat my mum with great care and affection, which she responds to even now that Alzheimer's has got a great hold on her.
I cannot fault the care
and attention Mum has received over the last 4 years and would highly recommend Carmel Lodge.

We were initially anxious about putting our dad into a care home but we needed some respite care. From our first contact with Carmel Lodge to the day our dad left, we were very pleased with the care our dad received. All the staff were extremely friendly and caring to both our dad and ourselves. Dad
enjoyed the food and said they made a decent cup of coffee!

My mum was placed at Carmel Lodge via social services after a prolonged stay in the hospital, so I didn't get a chance to view the home or facilities beforehand, and there was no visiting due to Covid. However, when I was eventually allowed to visit, I was very impressed by the level of care my mum
is receiving. Your staff are amazing, nothing is too much, and this applies to management all the way through to your maintenance staff. My only reservation is that the bedrooms are very tired looking, I have tried to make her room better with bedding and pictures, but the chairs are a bit grubby. That said, I believe this is to be addressed in the coming months.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.364)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.364) out of 10 for Carmel Lodge Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.564 for Carmel Lodge Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (61 Excellents x 5) + (26 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 94 Ratings = 4.564
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Carmel Lodge Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 36 registered maximum number of service users is 7.2, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
