The staff is always helpful and polite. Appear very responsive to my Mum's needs. The facility always clean and tidy. Have generally kept me up to date through the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately have not been able to video call due to IT issues at the facility.

I visited my mother during the Coronavirus lockdown and was very pleased to find the home was calm and relaxed, with no sign of stress among staff or residents. It felt the same as usual, which was a real achievement, given the very difficult circumstances.

During the six years that my wife has been resident at Carmel Lodge, she has been cared for with unfailing professionalism, kindness and affection. She is well-fed, comfortable and responds to some of the activities, in so far as her severe stage dementia permits. I cannot believe that her care could
be provided any better.

My cousin appears to have settled in very well at Carmel Lodge Care Home and seems at ease with staff and other residents. She enjoys the company and the environment in general and is friendly and helpful to other residents. There is a sense to me that she feels at home.
She has told me on several
occasions that she enjoys the food and eating communally in the dining room and speaks highly of the care and catering staff.

I feel that my mum is extremely well cared for with understanding and affection, even though she can sometimes be a little difficult due to her dementia. I appreciate the continuity of staff, which is very important to her since she has now been in Carmel Lodge for over three years. In the past, I did
express concerns over cleanliness in the home, but this problem appears to have been completely overcome.

Dad's Alzheimers had degenerated rapidly at the end of 2017. As this was my business' busiest time I was desperate to get him somewhere safe, quickly. The staff came to visit us in his house and we discussed the possibility of respite care, leading to a permanent stay if all went well.

Luckily

there was a room available and within a week Dad was able to move in. He settled in very well and seemed to relax hugely from the relief of knowing that he was somewhere safe (he'd taken to wandering in the dark).

From the outset, the staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. He's been there for 2 1/2 months now and this has not changed. There's an open door policy for visitors (with the exception of mealtimes) and Dad's needs are perfectly catered for by specialist dementia care staff. He is really happy and gets on well with the other residents. The couple of times I've taken him out (to hospital appointments) he's quite happy to return to the safety of the place he now lives.

Mum now appears to be very settled now after some upset initially. She has gained a little weight and is taking her medications as prescribed.
She is engaging in a variety of activities and enjoying socialising.
We are kept informed by the home as to how she is whenever we call.
We are satisfied
with how she has settled now.

Mum initially went for respite and is now there permanently. It's not perfect but after viewing several others we decided it was the best home we'd visited. The staff are what makes the place really - friendly and approachable and easy to talk to about anything. The food is good and the rooms are very
pleasant and kept clean.
Varying stages of dementia can sometimes be problematic.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.364)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.364) out of 10 for Carmel Lodge Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.564 for Carmel Lodge Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (61 Excellents x 5) + (26 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 94 Ratings = 4.564
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Carmel Lodge Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 36 registered maximum number of service users is 7.2, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
