Mum now appears to be very settled now after some upset initially. She has gained a little weight and is taking her medications as prescribed.
She is engaging in a variety of activities and enjoying socialising.
We are kept informed by the home as to how she is whenever we call.

We are satisfied with how she has settled now.

Mum initially went for respite and is now there permanently. It's not perfect but after viewing several others we decided it was the best home we'd visited. The staff are what makes the place really - friendly and approachable and easy to talk to about anything. The food is good and the rooms are very pleasant and kept clean.

Varying stages of dementia can sometimes be problematic.

Mum has been at Carmel Lodge for just over one year. She says the staff are very kind and caring and this is my experience too.
They go out of their way to be helpful.
The home is always clean and smells fresh.
My mum has to have a pureed diet because of swallowing difficulties.
Although the food always smells good, I think there could be a bit more imagination used for mum's evening meal which often seems to be soup or scrambled egg.
The décor in the lounge is lovely and bright and fresh, having recently been decorated but the bedroom could do with 'freshening up' and the chairs in the lounge are too low for mum to get out of unassisted unless she is sat in the higher arm chair we brought in specially for her.
The backup services provided (hairdresser, chiropodist, doctor etc) are good.
I would welcome more reviews 1:1 of mum's progress and care.

I wish there could be a lot more activities provided for mum to join in with.

Dad has settled well. The home is inviting and the staff are caring. The home looks a little shabby at present and could do with upgrading, especially the décor.

The standard of cleanliness is fabulous and the cleaners work so hard to avoid all nasty smells. The chefs work hard but I feel they could provide better food (not their fault) but their budget appears limited.

I have reviewed Carmel Lodge approximately 3 months ago and my view has not changed. If every care home was excellent as this then the world would be a better place.

My husband has been here 4/5 months and I am so happy we found it. The care, food, facilities, activities cannot be faulted.

I had been looking after my wife with Alzheimer's for 5 years when I had to be admitted to hospital with a broken leg. In my absence, my daughters concluded that my wife would need to be admitted to a care home for respite care. They visited several homes and finally chose Carmel Lodge. In the event I was in hospital for 7 weeks and my wife's condition deteriorated and she had to stay in Carmel Lodge. Although I wish I could still look after her I am sure that my wife is in the right place. She is happy and content and gets all the loving care she needs. Our family had made the right choice for their wife and mother.

Mum has been at Carmel Lodge for 6 months. For the family, this has been a difficult time but knowing she is safe and confident she is being well cared for has made this time easier. The staff are lovely, everyone is known by name and treated with love and respect. Friends and family are always made welcome and encouraged to stay or share a meal. Mum has made friends and has gradually come to regard this as a home. Mum loves to keep busy and seeing her laughing or smiling whilst tap dancing or singing along reassures that we've made the right decision.

My mother has been in Carmel Lodge since August 2016.
I find the home very friendly and caring. Mum settled in from day 1 and continues to thrive. We have had a few changes the last few months though, the manager left unexpectedly which left me very concerned re my mother's care. We then had a temporary manager who came in to cover and she turned the home around in the space of 2 months. Upstairs was decorated, new chairs delivered, the cleaning had improved dramatically and the care was just as good.
We now have a new manager who has only been there a few weeks, so it's too soon to say how things will progress, she seems very nice, friendly and caring so hoping that everything now settles and we see some more improvements.

I can only go off my own experiences, but I am now very happy that mum is being taken care of very well and I can only speak highly of the home.

My husband was greeted by a friendly happy group of staff. After my previous experience it was wonderful to see staff smiling. He has had two strokes and is unhappy to be in care, however it is in my view the only answer. The manager and her staff are wonderful in the loving and professional way they treat these unfortunate patients, none of us want to find ourselves in a care home but a caring home is what I have found and for my husband and myself. I thank God for places like Carmel Lodge.

My Dad suffered vascular dementia and stayed at Carmel Lodge from October 2015 until April 2016 when he died peacefully in his room.

I visited my Dad almost daily, and at different times of the day so I think I have a good insight into the level of care provided at Carmel Lodge.

The staff were never less than absolutely outstanding. The love they give to all the residents is genuine and moving, and I struggle to find the superlatives to say how much I admire and am grateful to them for the difference they made to my Dad's last few months. The love and respect they put in to the Christmas Dinner will stay with me forever, and I will no doubt shed a tear each Christmas Day as I remember it for the rest of my life.

If you've not guessed yet, I think they are fabulous.

My mother celebrated her 100th birthday at Carmel. Staff and management went out of their way to ensure she had a great time and she certainly did. She has been at Carmel nearly two years and we are very pleased with the quality of care. As I live in Australia I can only visit occasionally.

It was a very difficult decision to place mum into care but the right one considering she was no longer safe in her own home due to the Alzheimer's. We placed mum at Carmel Lodge initially for respite care but very quickly realised that mum was improving sue to the fantastic treatment she was receiving. She now has a routine to her life and no longer struggling with dressing and other tasks. Thanks to the care she was receiving mum is very settled and our worries and concerns have greatly reduced.

Overall Experience

My mum stayed at Carmel Lodge for 2 weeks respite. The manager and the staff are wonderfully caring and welcoming. The atmosphere is relaxed, with a sense of calm, which is quite remarkable given that most of the residents are suffering with various stages of dementia. All the staff are cheerful and attentive, and they treated my mum with much kindness and respect, attending to her needs really well.

I would highly recommend Carmel Lodge to anyone.

Cost* I believe the weekly cost of care home in general is very expensive, so, comparatively speaking, this charge is fair.

My husband has been a resident at Carmel Lodge for the past three months. During this time my husband has received excellent care which is due to the dedication and professionalism of the staff and manager. They always have time to have a chat with him which has helped him settle in. Additionally the manager and staff have been very supportive to me offering reassurance at all times. Myself and my family feel very fortunate to have found such a lovely, well run care home for our loved one as he is very happy and content.
