We were lucky to get a vacancy at Acorn House for Mum for when we wanted. They were quick to respond to my enquiry before they even knew the dates we wanted. They made the whole process easy. When I went to see the room I got the impression of a cheerful atmosphere throughout the whole place. Mum was
apprehensive as she had never done a respite stay anywhere. On the day I dropped Mum off, we went to her room. It was warm and cosy without being stifling hot and had ample storage. They took Mum for her lunch in the dining room and she settled immediately. Mum really enjoyed her stay and had settled, joining in, interacting, fully occupied. She enjoyed the morning 'pampering'. She would look forward to staying again if possible.

The home is run to a high standard. Management and staff work hard to keep the home running smoothly in these hard times. Visitors and relatives are always greeted with a welcoming smile and always kept up to date with news and views of the home. Great job, well done.

I think Acorn House is a lovely, clean and comfortable care home. The management staff are friendly and efficient. Mum is happy to stay there which makes my respite breaks far less stressful. I can leave her without having any worry and know she will be cared for. Mum mentioned that her bed was very
uncomfortable and she doesn't like the meals at lunchtime, otherwise no complaints.
Reply from Jackie Hirst, Marketing at Acorn House Care CentreThank you for your review, I would just like to address the comments raised regarding the menu. I am very sorry to hear your mum did not enjoy our lunchtime menu, our menus are decided by the residents who reside here at Acorn House, we hold regular resident meetings of which they can raise any issues or requests at that time. We can also offer alternatives on request and I can only apologise if this was not offered to you at the time of your mum's stay. I have introduced a daily menu into the home and I have now requested this be displayed in bedrooms and around the home for people to see. I would also like to apologise about your mum's bed, if I would have known at the time, I could have offered a more comfortable bed or mattress. I am very sorry if your mum was in any distress at night due to this. Thank you for your feedback, I am always looking to improve on our home. We will look forward to seeing you again in the future.

My mother has been a resident of Acorn House for 6 years. She has always been treated with great respect, care, and dignity. I have found all staff to be friendly, approachable, and caring. The meals are all homecooked with fresh ingredients, and there is a varied menu, and individual needs catered
for. My mother has just celebrated her 104th birthday and I cannot thank the staff enough for all their care and attention.

The staff at Acorn continue to do a sterling job with my now bedbound mother. Excellent all-round care means I have full confidence in my mum's wellbeing. Has been particularly helpful and proactive during the pandemic.

Very happy. Whenever we call our Dad is always dressed and smart. The staff are always helpful and friendly in what I imagine can be a very difficult job at times. I can't praise them enough. The food always looks good and is freshly cooked. Acorn House have helped my dad over the 3 years he has lived
there and I will always be grateful for what they do.

Under the lockdown circumstances, it is difficult to visit. She has only been in the home since July 2020, having said that the home has kept her very safe and free from Covid which is something in itself.

Overall I feel my wife is in caring hands. Her looks and demeanour are usually good and although she cannot relate so to me seems to be reasonably content and happy with her surroundings. The staff are always attentive and caringly kind to her, even when my wife who has dementia is not in the friendliest
of moods. It is satisfying to feel she is being well looked after.

In all aspects, care is excellent, caring and far beyond what we expected. Home is welcoming and clearly treats residents as individuals. They show patience, professionalism and a great deal of humanity and good humour. I have no faults that I can find. Apart from my handwriting obviously.

My most recent visit was on the 16th July 2020 when I went to visit my Dad who has vascular brain disease. He has been in Acorn House Care Centre, Blackburn since before the COVID-19 lockdown at the end of February and his physical well being has improved dramatically since being looked after by the
excellent staff and carers. My Dad was well turned out and had a tan from sitting in the garden at the home. His mental health has not deteriorated since being in the home at all but he is missing being able to go out and about, especially for lunches as that was something we did together every week. I can't thank the staff enough or praise them enough for all their hard work and thoughtfulness, especially during this pandemic. Thankfully, no-one in the home, staff or residents, have contracted COVID-19 because if the vigilance of the staff and the families.

My mum stayed here for almost two weeks for some respite care after experiencing a major depressive episode during the Covid-19 Pandemic. I will state to be fair that this was not the correct placement to meet her needs and was more the hospital discharge team wanting to free up a bed, which nowadays
seems to be more important than the patient's needs.
Mum deteriorated after one and a half weeks. She was at the top of the building behind a key code lock on the stairs, she was with other clients with Dementia, definitely not the correct placement when you've scored as severe depression and anxiety. They had put Mum's purse in the medication safe and I was told they didn't know how much money was inside but it was "bulging". The money had not been counted and recorded by their staff, so we are unsure if she had more than the 54 pound that was in it when we picked it up. Mum ended up back in hospital and was severely dehydrated.
Reply from Jackie Hallewell, Marketing at Acorn House Care CentreThank you for your feedback and please be reassured that we use all comments to improve our Service. A full investigation has been carried out and we are more than happy to discuss this with you in person.
I would like to clarify the locked door you make reference to, is a door that opens directly on to a stairwell; therefore for health and safety requirements, there is an electronic keypad in place.

My dad stayed with you for a couple of weeks so that mum could have some much-needed respite. Thank you, she has been able to relax and re-energise. Dad was something of a reluctant guest but the staff have been patient and innovating providing a calendar to count down to going home day. He appears
to have connected with some residents and staff despite his dementia. His room was pleasant and the home warm and welcoming.
Now that mum has got dad home and attended to him we assumed he would have soaked in a bubble bath a couple of times during his stay with you, at least! But now we aren't so sure he was even washed. His head smells sour and greasy and plaster on his foot is still there wrinkled and stuck with sock fluff.
Perhaps we didn't have enough discussion about personal care prior to his stay. This is just an observation.

My dad is happy at Acorn House. The staff are very approachable and understanding. The staff attend to all dads medical needs and contact the doctor when needed. Dad has fallen out of bed several times and we are waiting for equipment to attach to the bed.
Dad is happy at Acorn House and on occasions,
the staff have gone beyond their duties to meet my dad's needs. I.e getting his Saturday newspaper taking him across the road.
Reply from Jackie Hallewell, Marketing at Acorn House Care CentreThank you for your kind review. As you are aware the equipment that was on order is already in situ but if you have any more problems, please do not hesitate to let me know.

I have experienced warmth and helpful advice from the staff at Acorn House. My grandad settled in really quite quickly. They are good at adapting to his different routines. I know that he gets up relatively late, however, when he goes down to the dining room at about 10 am, they seem to and have been
very kind by asking what he wants for breakfast.
He enjoys the company of the staff and I know he appreciates this immensely. My grandad would soon complain if he wasn't happy so we know he is being well looked after.
Thank you all so much at Acorn House.

My father in law came to Acorn House in October. When he arrived he had not been taking his medication correctly (diabetic) and had not been eating properly hence an ulcer had developed on his heel. His temperament was not good either. Within a couple of months he had improved tremendously and now he
is doing really well. Medically no ulcer or trace of, he is happy and content. This is down to the whole team at Acorn. He is fed wonderful meals with some treats made by the cook to suit his diabetes. The nursing and care staff are happy and will do what they can to please we are lucky to have them there.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.671)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.671) out of 10 for Acorn House Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.771 for Acorn House Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (148 Excellents x 5) + (37 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 188 Ratings = 4.771
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Acorn House Care Centre is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 32 registered maximum number of service users is 6.4, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
