Kings Court care home provides residential and respite care for older people. The team in County Durham takes pride in the high quality care they offer.

The lifestyle team organises activities, outings and events tailored to residents' needs and interests, and the home is also active in the close-knit community of Barnard Castle, taking part in local craft fairs as well as groups like the WI.

Previously the King’s Head hotel, the home benefits from character and charm; what used to be the hotel ballroom is now a lovely living space, and the spacious bedrooms are warm, bright and comfortable.

other privately arranged healthcare. Should you require an escort to hospital appointments, we may apply
an agreed hourly charge for this service.

Overall, my mum is happy with the care home. However, what she is extremely frustrated about is the lack of activities run by the staff. Bingo once every work or so for one afternoon is insufficient to relieve the boredom.
Mum often asks to be taken out in her wheelchair to the local shops or simply
for a change of scenery, but the usual reply is that the staff are too busy to do so.

Our lifestyle team provide a selection of activities for residents each week, and whilst they work hard to run activities that appeal to everyone’s interests, this is not always possible. We will always listen to residents’ feedback on the activities schedule and will adapt to suit their preferences wherever possible. We are actively recruiting for more Lifestyle team members, which will allow us to support residents with more frequent trips outside of the home; however, our current team will support residents to leave the home whenever they are able to.

I am generally satisfied with your service. My only complaint is my mother's lack of hair-dressing and her fingernails; she's never had long hair in the sixty years I've been alive.

Residents living at the home have access to our in-house salon, with a local hairdresser visiting regularly and offering a range of services. Other visiting healthcare professionals offer personal care services and our care staff offer nail cutting. Whilst these services are available and encouraged, we respect residents’ right to decline these.

All staff deserve a pay rise! I can’t fault anything at this moment in time. I can talk to any of the staff about anything.
The only thing I have to add is another activities member of staff.

My mum has been in Kings Court now for nearly a year. She has settled in very well. Her care has been excellent and the staff are very friendly and caring towards her. She enjoys the food and is responding well to a balanced diet. She prefers to stay in her room so hasn't really joined in the activities
but is interested when they tell her about them and joins in with raffles etc. Management and staff are always accessible if we need them.

Could not have been happier with the care given.
The staff and management were wonderful to our aunt and us as a family.
The activities were brilliant. Aunt loved the food too.
The room was clean and fresh. Tea and coffee were freely available.

My father had respite here and said he wanted to stay as he couldn't look after himself.
Loves the place as all the staff are very friendly and lovely to him.
Likes getting his drinks and meals brought to him if he doesn't want to go to the dining room.

Overall, as a family, we are very pleased by how our resident has been welcomed and settled in. The first room she was allocated was a good size, but the staff suggested she be moved to a room more suitable to her needs, which it is! However, it is lacking a shower. Activities seem adequate but the
resident doesn't generally like to take part. COVID rules for visitors are fairly strict but acceptable (although what is the point of the apron?).

Although not every room at Kings Court offers en-suite facility, all residents have access to specially designed wet rooms to suit their every need. Whilst we like to encourage all residents to take part in activities and socialise, we appreciate this is not everyone’s preference. We work with residents to understand their wishes and provide one-to-one activities where needed. The team at Kings Court place great importance in the health and safety measures, including surrounding COVID, in order to keep residents safe at all times.

My mother has recently died and I could not have praised the home more for the care and devotion shown to her. They treated my mother as if she was their own. Who could ask for anything more? It is a very friendly environment to visit.

Dad's comments the last time we visited him were 'it's like being on holiday'. The staff treat him with dignity and respect. He's been living alone for over ten years. He's looked after himself well and was very independent, but slowly lost communication skills and struggled to interact with anyone
other than direct family. The Kings Court team have slowly resurrected these skills and have helped him rediscover his artistic side which has been hidden for so long. What a change they have made to his well-being. Because of Covid we have been unable to see inside the home, so can't rate all the categories.

Very satisfied with the care that my brother-in-law received. The staff were brilliant in making him welcome during his transition period but unfortunately, his illness became too much for them to cope with as he needed specialist treatment. The care manager was brilliant at sorting everything out for
us and getting the help he needed under difficult circumstances. Can't fault his care at all. Brilliant.

Our mother has been a resident of Kings Court for a year. The building is a bit of a rabbit warren with lots of corridors but the main rooms and bedrooms are fine. All the staff are fantastic from the manager, admin to all the care assistants, cleaners and laundry people. There haven't been many staff
changes over the last year showing that the workforce is happy and giving continuity to the residents. The food is outstanding, a credit to the catering staff. We would recommend Kings Court to friends and family.

I’ve worked at Kings Court for almost 19 years, having started as a Care Assistant before progressing to Senior Carer, then Deputy Manager and now Home Manager.


I joined Care UK because they really care about both residents and colleagues. They do an amazing job of helping team members in their homes to progress.


As Home Manager, I run Kings Court and ensure everyone in the home is safe and happy. I believe the most important quality to have is to care. I care about residents and will do everything I can to ensure they have a fulfilling and happy life while living with us at Kings Court.


I love my job. Becoming a Home Manager at Kings Court has been the biggest highlight of my career to date. I’m excited to make positive changes in my role, as I love to see residents happy and loving lives. I’m proud when I know that we as a team are making Kings Court an amazing place to live.


A fun fact about me is that I come from a farming family, and I love cows! When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family.
