Mum has now been at Eden Cottage for over three years and I cannot fault the care she is receiving. It is small enough to feel really homely and Mum is treated as a member of the family rather than as a resident. The staff are just amazing and endlessly patient and compassionate, even though Mum (who suffers from dementia) can be quite a challenge. I have absolute trust in them to have her best interests at heart. It is so reassuring to know that she is in such good hands, especially as I live at the other end of the country and cannot visit as often as I would like. Her room is always spotlessly clean, she seems to enjoy her meals and has made friends with some of the residents. I always receive a warm welcome when I visit and carers are happy to talk when I phone to see how Mum is. It is all more than I could have hoped for and I am so grateful to everyone who works there.

My mam has been living at Eden Cottage now for nearly 3 years and suffers from Dementia. This small family-run care home is absolutely excellent. The staff are so caring and treat her with respect. She is happy there and I know she is safe and has been well throughout her stay. There is a garden at the back too. If you are lucky enough to be offered a place here for your loved one I would not hesitate to take a place. The staff and Management are amazing and I don't have to worry about my mam as I know they are caring for her and I have ultimate trust in them all. I feel so lucky my mam is being looked after there. Nothing is too much trouble for them.

Have waited a year to see mam... emotional but amazing. We sang songs from our past... laughed and talked. Staff have been amazing, working throughout. Much appreciated. So lucky to have mam in this wonderful home. Means so much to know that she is cared for with respect and dignity. Her face lights up when she sees staff, which to me says a lot. Staff have worked through all of this lockdown. They deserve a medal, not only looking after our loved ones but for working whilst worrying about their own families. You are all amazing and can't wait for all this to be over.

I was alerted to Eden Cottage by a friend who had placed their relative there. As a small home, Eden Cottage provides a personal service for my mother with the same core care staff, which she has got to know even with the onset of dementia. Critically they have worked hard to keep residents safe from the pandemic and to my knowledge, there have been no cases reported amongst residents. It is essential I am able to trust the care provided to my mother as I live 240 miles away and, as a result of lockdowns, I have been unable to visit since September 2020. I have no hesitation in recommending them to prospective residents.

My mother became a resident of Eden Cottage in May 2020, initially on respite care. My mother was very poorly both physically and mentally and had spent time in hospital in the weeks beforehand.
I and my family all thought that she was not going to live much longer, she had lost a lot of weight and had deteriorated mentally. The care staff at Eden Cottage are second to none, and the senior staff are amazing. I honestly feel that, had my mother not been taken into Eden Cottage, she might not be here today.
My mother is happier than she has been for a long time and improving every day, she loves it in her new home, and thinks very highly of the staff and looks upon them as her extended family!

They have all worked tirelessly to get her health back on track, and I and all of my family owe them a huge debt of gratitude. They all go that extra mile, and we think they are amazing and our mother would be the first to agree.

My friend moved into this home and loved her time there, every time I visited she spoke so highly of the staff and she couldn’t get enough of the food!
She was so nervous prior to going into a care home but she was really pleased to have found Eden Cottage.

There was always such a pleasant atmosphere when I visited and I was always made to feel extremely welcome. Outstanding home.

My mother moved into Eden Cottage in December 2019 after much deliberation about which home to choose.
We couldn’t be happier, the staff are absolutely fantastic, they go above and beyond for their residents and it has a real genuine family feel, you can see that the staff really care and everyone gets on so well, the relationship between the management and staff is lovely to witness.

My mother is so happy and settled there and we have no worries at all, she is so well cared for and during this Covid-19 pandemic it’s so reassuring that she is being kept safe. We have been kept informed of how she is doing and can’t thank everyone there enough.

Eden Cottage is a very family orientated care home. The staff are nearly all long-serving. The staff and management have the total wellbeing of their residents at heart and each care package is tailor-made for each individual and delivered to residents in a caring but professional manner.

When visiting homes in Darlington, I was struck by the different 'feel' of each home. Some struck terror in my heart (and that of my friend), others seemed boring and unattractive. Some staff seemed very off-hand and in one a buzzer sounded all the 50 minutes we spent there! As soon as I met the staff at Eden Cottage Care Home, I felt relief. At last somewhere small, comfortable, friendly and caring. A weight fell off my shoulders and I now know that my gut feeling was correct.

Mum came to Eden Cottage Care Home from Wales 8 months ago. She had just come out of hospital and whilst in hospital had become a widow. She is in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, hence she arrived frail, undernourished, grieving and disconnected and moved far away from everything that was familiar to her. I cannot say strongly enough how much I valued the support of the staff over that last few months and the care they have shown mum is exemplary. She is treated as an individual, with patience and understanding. The staff work tirelessly and with good humour to meet her needs. She is physically stronger, has gained weight and is settled into her new routine. I visit frequently, and at different times of day and I have never witnessed anything other than this standard of care.

My mum hasn't been here very long and is still a bit unsettled which is to be expected. The staff have all been very nice indeed. The home has a very nice feel about it. It is warm and cosy and each room is a little different. My mum has a lovely room which is kept clean and tidy. So far I am very pleased with the home. The only small complaint is that sometimes the food is a little cold. Also, perhaps a little more encouragement to take part in activities would be helpful. I think my mum will settle in time! It's a lovely place.

Reply from Dean Horton-Thomas, Director at Eden Cottage Care Home

Thank you for your kind words, Janet. Sorry to hear that the food is sometimes a little cold, I will have a chat with our kitchen staff to ensure that it is only an isolated incident. We do encourage our residents to partake in all activities and will continue to do so with your mum.
