St Nicholas House is a beautifully positioned care home in the village of Churchstoke, set on the Powys-Shropshire border in the heart of the Welsh countryside. Providing residential, nursing, and dementia care to up to 49 people, the home combines a tranquil rural setting with genuine community spirit and a strong reputation for personalised, compassionate care.

Originally a mid-19th century vicarage and now a fully purpose-built nursing facility following extension in 2010, St Nicholas House has been part of RDCP Care since 2017 and was named in the carehome.co.uk Top 20 Recommended Care Homes in Wales 2023. The home is regulated by Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW).

St Nicholas House offers something genuinely rare: nursing-level care in an authentic rural Welsh setting, with sweeping views of rolling hills and lush green fields from large, bright bedrooms designed for accessibility and comfort.

Life at St Nicholas House is rooted in the wider Churchstoke community. The local Churchstoke Community Primary School runs Well-being Wednesdays, where children of varying ages visit the home to spend time with residents, an intergenerational programme that brings real joy to both groups. Residents also visit the school for its events, and regular outings include the local pub, church, and garden centres, all within close proximity of the home.

The dedicated activities team, plan a monthly schedule that includes shopping trips, seasonal crafts, bingo, baking, pamper sessions, gardening, flower arranging, and visits from singers, puppeteers, and animal handlers. All residents are included through one-to-one sessions and accessible group activities.

For families in Powys, Shropshire, and across the Welsh borders looking for nursing, residential, or dementia care in a stunning rural setting with deep community roots, St Nicholas House is an exceptional choice.

My brother has been at St Nicholas House for a year, and he has always been well treated by an excellent staff. Whenever I visit, I am able to obtain a frank update of his condition and prospects from all the staff whether management or senior nurses for the more serious side, or from the office or
catering staff for more run of the mill information. Everybody is pleasant, smiling and helpful and treat all the customers with dignity and respect. In addition, if there is a problem I will be notified immediately. There is an excellent selection of activities offered to all those who can take park both in the home and outside.

Visiting my friend at St Nicholas House is a warming experience, I feel he is loved, respected and cared for very well there. The staff are friendly and helpful and everywhere is so clean! There are amazing daily activities for the residents and excellent connections with the local primary school and

The care on the whole is excellent, especially that of the activity coordinators, each time I visit they are engaging the residents in a different activity, how they think of these things I am at a loss to comprehend.

Mum entered St Nicholas House 6 months ago, at short notice. The manager and staff were very accommodating and did everything in their power to settle her quickly. Without exception, I have found the staff to be kind and caring. A particular strength is the range of activities that mum is able to participate
in; there is always something on. I would wholeheartedly recommend St Nicholas to anyone.

I cannot fault any of the care that my brother received during his 2 1/2 years stay at St Nicholas. The staff directly responsible for him were superb. Also all the staff who looked after the cleaning and cooking were tip top, the home was always spotlessly clean.

I bought my "aunt" - not really a blood relative, but a long standing friend of my parents- to stay with me in July 2023. At 96, she was finding it difficult to live in her own home. Her husband and son are deceased and her grandson is autistic and in a hostel. In June 2024 she developed what became
a stage 4 bed sore and was taken to hospital and then to a care home, by direction of social services. I had no experience of care home, but was aware of many shortcomings at that home and hence had her moved to St Nicholas House, which was highly recommended. The recommendations were right, the contrast is amazing. St Nicholas is all that I would imagine a care home should be. My aunt's accommodation is comfortable and well equipped, the staff are caring, friendly and communicative, the food is well thought out and the programme of activities for residents is well thought out and stimulating. St Nicholas House is a model of how a care home should be.
Reply from Vasilica Iovu, Manager at St Nicholas House LtdThank you so much for your kind and thoughtful review. We are honoured that you chose St Nicholas House for your aunt's care and are delighted that you have seen the comfort, compassion and dedication of our team. Your feedback means a great deal to us and will be shared with all staff.

We were so lucky we managed to get a room in the lovely St Nicholas home for our Dad. We had heard such good things about the home and we were certainly not disappointed. Dad was suffering with Dementia and the last two years he needed 24 hour care. I cannot thank the management and all the staff
enough for their kindness and care with our Dad. I was able to visit every day for just over two years and was always made to feel very welcome. Dad was always well looked after and I was kept informed of any changes in his condition by the excellent caring nursing staff. Dad was treated with respect at all times and we couldn't have asked for more. Dad loved to sit in the lovely garden and we would spend precious time together. I made lovely friends at the home and will miss the chats and laughter. Dad sadly passed away in September and we as a family are so grateful to everyone for their care and understanding. I will miss everyone.
Reply from Vasilica Iovu, Manager at St Nicholas House LtdDear Edwina,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a heartfelt review of your experience at St Nicholas. It means a great deal to all of us to know that your Dad felt comfortable, cared for, and respected during his time with us. We feel privileged to have been able to support him and your family over the past two years.
Your kind words about our team and the home's atmosphere truly touch us. We always strive to create a warm, welcoming environment where both residents and their families feel part of our community, so it's wonderful to hear this reflected in your experience.
Please accept our deepest condolences on your loss. It was an honour to care for your Dad, and we will remember him fondly. You will always be part of our St Nicholas family, and we hope you'll stay in touch.

Mom has recently been admitted to St Nich's following several physical illnesses. Right from the outset, she has been made to feel very welcome, we have been able to arrange her room to resemble her front room at home so the transition has not been too traumatic for her. The staff are friendly, caring
& have adapted to Mom's needs very quickly. They are receptive to family requests & encourage family input to ensure Mom receives the best care possible. The staff are all permanent, which is extremely beneficial in providing continuing good care for Mom & others & it is very reassuring for relatives to see the same friendly faces when visiting. As a family, we love joining in the activities with Mom & we are also able to join Mom on trips out. It is obvious that St Nich's is a well run establishment with all staff carrying out their varied roles with professionalism & sensitivity. In an ideal world, Mom would still be at home, but St Nichs is the next best thing.
Reply from Vasilica Iovu, Manager at St Nicholas House LtdDear Phillippa, thank you for your kind words about your mom's experience at St Nicholas House. We're so pleased she has settled in well and that arranging her room to feel like home has made the transition easier. It's lovely to hear that you value our caring team and enjoy joining in activities and outings together. Family involvement is very important to us, and your feedback means a great deal. We're delighted you see St Nick's as the next best thing to home, and we'll continue to do our best to support your mom and family.Warm regards from all the team.

As a family we were made to feel both welcome and supported by every one of the staff. In caring for mum it always felt that there was a strong supportive team but that her individuality was enjoyed and respected. I know mum had no desire to be in a care home but in choosing St Nicks we felt that
we had found a community where she would be cherished and well cared for. It was lovely that the carers shared her enjoyment of wearing her nice clothes and colour co-ordination and the incredible laundry team kept her clothes looking great. The communication from St Nicks, in particular from the nursing team, was excellent. Every change in needs was discussed with the family and the experience of the whole care team in caring for elderly residents with complex needs was very clear. We can see that mum had developed a rapport with the care and nursing team and I felt the same - I will miss my visits and chats with a couple of the staff members and the nurses and carers. Thank you.

Mum spent 16 nights at St Nicholas enabling me to go away for 2 glorious weeks with my husband. We could do this because we knew Mum would be safe and looked after. The standard of care is high - all staff members are friendly and approachable- really skilled in forming new relationships quickly. In
a short time Mum became really fond of all the staff working with her. Mum's needs are complex - she has bowel cancer and needs a low residue diet and once everyone understood what that looked like in practice, she was able to have tasty meals.
There are varied daily activities which you can join in with and which Mum thoroughly enjoyed.
However good a team is they can't function fully without good leadership. St Nicholas is very very well led. The ethos, values and committment of all are clear as soon as you enter the building.

We’ve been very pleased with the care Mum received at St Nicholas, the staff are thoughtful, and the atmosphere is calm and warm. When Mum is poorly, the nurse is very responsive, and communication with the care staff is excellent. The activities are fantastic, and the home is well-organised. The activity
staff, as well as the manager, deputy and receptionist, have been amazing at helping to settle in Mum and welcoming in family members and visitors; we’re all very grateful.

Mum moved into St Nicholas House in November following a long spell in the hospital where she was very unwell. Since moving to St Nicholas House, she has been made to feel so welcome, and the staff are all so lovely. Mum's mental health has improved, and following wonderful care, her bed sores have
either cleared up or got a lot smaller. Mum really enjoys the food and having her hair done by a visiting hairdresser each week. The activities coordinator is wonderful and painted Mum's nails as part of a pamper morning; Mum has never had her nails painted, ever! Activities take place every day. Mum doesn't always want to get out of bed, but the staff are good at trying to encourage her to get out. I can't fault St Nicholas House or the care my mum receives.

Mum has lived at St Nicholas for nine months now, and we are extremely grateful and thankful for the very high standard of care that happens for the great majority of the time. The care, environment, food and general well-being of the residents are first-class. In particular, the activities staff are
just fab - something on offer nearly every day of the week. We feel very strongly that our views and wishes are listened to. The manager does a very good job of leading her team. It is s compliment to the staff that they attend many of the resident's activities during their own time.
The best care home in our locality.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.846) out of 10 for St Nicholas House Ltd is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.921 for St Nicholas House Ltd is calculated as follows: ( (188 Excellents x 5) + (12 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 202 Ratings = 4.921
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.925 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Nicholas House Ltd is based on 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.925
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 49 registered maximum number of service users is 9.8, which has been reached with 17 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I qualified as a nurse in 2007 and began my career in Romania before moving to the UK to continue my journey as a Registered General Nurse. I joined St. Nicholas House in 2013 and progressed from RGN to Nurse in Charge, then to Clinical Lead/Deputy Manager in 2018. With support from RDCP Care, I completed my Level 5 Diploma in Leadership in 2020 and became a Registered Manager in 2021. After 13 years at the home, it means much more to me than just a job—it’s about the difference we make every day.

I’ve always been passionate about helping others and making a positive impact. I enjoy creating a warm, homely environment where residents feel safe, respected, and truly cared for. Supporting my team is just as important to me, and I take pride in helping them grow and succeed.

My strengths include leadership, team development, and delivering high-quality, person-centred care. I focus on building strong relationships with residents and families, while maintaining high standards and supporting continuous improvement across the home.

My approach is based on compassion, respect, and teamwork. I believe in listening to residents and families so they feel involved and valued, while supporting my team through guidance, encouragement, and leading by example.

I’m very proud of my journey and believe strongly in treating everyone with kindness, dignity, and respect. Outside of work, I enjoy learning and developing myself, and I feel grateful to be in a role where I can make a real difference every day.
