St Nicholas House is a beautifully positioned care home in the village of Churchstoke, set on the Powys-Shropshire border in the heart of the Welsh countryside. Providing residential, nursing, and dementia care to up to 49 people, the home combines a tranquil rural setting with genuine community spirit and a strong reputation for personalised, compassionate care.

Originally a mid-19th century vicarage and now a fully purpose-built nursing facility following extension in 2010, St Nicholas House has been part of RDCP Care since 2017 and was named in the carehome.co.uk Top 20 Recommended Care Homes in Wales 2023. The home is regulated by Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW).

St Nicholas House offers something genuinely rare: nursing-level care in an authentic rural Welsh setting, with sweeping views of rolling hills and lush green fields from large, bright bedrooms designed for accessibility and comfort.

Life at St Nicholas House is rooted in the wider Churchstoke community. The local Churchstoke Community Primary School runs Well-being Wednesdays, where children of varying ages visit the home to spend time with residents, an intergenerational programme that brings real joy to both groups. Residents also visit the school for its events, and regular outings include the local pub, church, and garden centres, all within close proximity of the home.

The dedicated activities team, plan a monthly schedule that includes shopping trips, seasonal crafts, bingo, baking, pamper sessions, gardening, flower arranging, and visits from singers, puppeteers, and animal handlers. All residents are included through one-to-one sessions and accessible group activities.

For families in Powys, Shropshire, and across the Welsh borders looking for nursing, residential, or dementia care in a stunning rural setting with deep community roots, St Nicholas House is an exceptional choice.

Mum’s room is so lovely. We took all her pictures and photos she had at home to make it familiar to her. She’s made friends with a lot of the people in the home. The carers are lovely to her and she’s always clean and tidy. Although she’s only able to use one hand, she likes watching the activities.
The manager is very friendly.

Since Nan moved to St Nicholas House, she has been warmly welcomed by all the staff, care, nursing and admin staff. Nan has been assisted to join in the large variety of activities. Nan enjoys the food, and there are always lots of options. The care home staff have been extremely accommodating and helpful.
We are very pleased with Nan’s care.

I was made to feel very welcome by the friendly manager and staff. My mum-in-law now participates in the activities, having fun and enjoying the company of others. I want to say a very big thank you to all the staff who work extremely hard to maintain her quality of life. I am grateful to all.

My mother has been in St Nicholas House since April 2019. Being the eldest of four sons and as a family together, it was hard considering how independent our mother has always been. We can honestly say that Mum could not have been anywhere very than "St Nicholas", given the circumstances. Management,
staff and facilities have been first class. During the Covid restrictions, the staff have been like family to Mum, and as a family, we owe all staff at "St Nicholas" a debt of gratitude.

My father is loved and very well cared for. He is always shaven, and his nails and hair are kept neat and tidy. He always looks happy when he sees any of the carers. We are informed immediately if there are any health concerns. Visiting is easy and pleasurable, especially in the garden in the summer.

My mother was resident in this lovely house for two and a half years. She initially didn’t want to go, but from when she arrived, she was made to feel welcome by all. She was treated with respect, and her dignity was maintained at all times. Everything from the laundry service, the delicious food, reception,
care and activities were of a high standard.
Sadly my mother recently died at the home. During this time, the family were treated with the utmost compassion and respect.

All the staff are highly dedicated and caring. I have always found them to be polite and helpful, always keeping us informed of both physical and mental issues with regard to my father. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming and I know that my father is extremely well cared for at St Nicholas House.
He is in good and safe hands and that is paramount for relatives. Although my father cannot participate, the activities offered are excellent.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.846) out of 10 for St Nicholas House Ltd is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.921 for St Nicholas House Ltd is calculated as follows: ( (188 Excellents x 5) + (12 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 202 Ratings = 4.921
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.925 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Nicholas House Ltd is based on 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.925
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 49 registered maximum number of service users is 9.8, which has been reached with 17 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home manager Joined: 2021

I qualified as a nurse in 2007 and began my career in Romania before moving to the UK to continue my journey as a Registered General Nurse. I joined St. Nicholas House in 2013 and progressed from RGN to Nurse in Charge, then to Clinical Lead/Deputy Manager in 2018. With support from RDCP Care, I completed my Level 5 Diploma in Leadership in 2020 and became a Registered Manager in 2021. After 13 years at the home, it means much more to me than just a job—it’s about the difference we make every day.

I’ve always been passionate about helping others and making a positive impact. I enjoy creating a warm, homely environment where residents feel safe, respected, and truly cared for. Supporting my team is just as important to me, and I take pride in helping them grow and succeed.

My strengths include leadership, team development, and delivering high-quality, person-centred care. I focus on building strong relationships with residents and families, while maintaining high standards and supporting continuous improvement across the home.

My approach is based on compassion, respect, and teamwork. I believe in listening to residents and families so they feel involved and valued, while supporting my team through guidance, encouragement, and leading by example.

I’m very proud of my journey and believe strongly in treating everyone with kindness, dignity, and respect. Outside of work, I enjoy learning and developing myself, and I feel grateful to be in a role where I can make a real difference every day.
