Holmes Care specialist dementia care home in Cowdenbeath featured as a finalist in the Scottish Care National Care Home Awards in November 2012. Having won the Dementia Service category in 2011, Roselea House was runner up at the Awards ceremony held on 23rd November 2012 at the Glasgow Hilton Hotel.

Roselea House has a large garden which some residents enjoy helping to keep tidy. Vegetables grown in the garden are used in the kitchen so that residents can enjoy their own produce.

Roselea House was runner up in the Care Home Design Award category at the May 2010 Awards.

The home opened in April 2010, having been converted to care specifically for residents with dementia type illnesses. It is considered to be at the forefront of dementia care provision. Roselea House has 20 large single occupancy rooms, all en-suite with showers, in a single storey building.

During the planning of the refurbishment, advice was taken from Stirling University Dementia Services Development Centre and incorporated into the interior design features to provide solutions for people with dementia. Some of the features are:

-Dementia signposting, including 3D tactile signposting.
-Individual memory boxes on bedroom doors.
-3D tactile memory murals.
-Non-intrusive call bell system with sensory activated lighting in bedrooms.

The principal aim was to provide a care home with a real family atmosphere for all residents, while maintaining respect for their privacy, individual rights, independence and freedom of choice.

All staff undergo specialist training delivered by Holmes Care – Holmes Care own training division in order to provide sensitive and appropriate care. Using a person-centred approach, based on leading theory in current dementia care practice, residents will receive a high level of attention and supervision based on their individual needs and wishes.

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
This home is simply outstanding. It is a small unit with 20 beds - and I believe this allows a great relationship to develop between the staff and residents. We have had a difficult transition with my gran due to her not accepting - or remembering! - that she has Alzheimer's. I cannot fault the way
the staff have supported her and all of the family - in fact quite the opposite as they've gone out of their way to help, even to visiting gran on their days off! The rooms are all lovely and bright and very clean. There is afternoon tea each weekday and visits out each week on the bus. Any concerns or questions are quickly dealt with and nothing is ever a problem to ask about. The staff are an amazing team from the fab manager who always makes time to talk when she's there, to the domestic staff, and all the levels in between. My gran has been to some other homes for respite and none of them are up to this level.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.619) out of 10 for Roselea House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 12 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.819 for Roselea House is calculated as follows: ( (124 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 144 Ratings = 4.819
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Roselea House is based on 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 20 registered maximum number of service users is 4, which has been reached with 12 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
