Fernlea House Residential Care Home in Cardenden was originally built in the early 1900s, Fernlea House has undergone two major extensions since its conversion into a care home. Despite these expansions, the home retains a warm, homely atmosphere and is regularly redecorated and refurbished to maintain a pleasant and modern living space for residents.

All of the home's public areas, including lounges and dining spaces, are located on the ground floor, offering easy access to the home's beautiful, mature garden areas through patio doors. Bedrooms on the upper floor are accessible via a lift, ensuring all areas are reachable for those with mobility needs.

Nestled at the heart of Cardenden, Fernlea House enjoys close proximity to both the local community and scenic country park walks, providing residents with a peaceful and enriching environment.

In addition to enjoying the surrounding area, residents have ample opportunities for engagement and activity. Regular outings to local shops, shows, and other points of interest are available via the home's minibus. Back at the home, residents can participate in a wide range of activities, from exercise classes to reminiscence sessions, arts and crafts, and games. Live concerts and performances from professional entertainers are also a regular highlight at Fernlea House.

The staff and care have been amazing. My sister, who is a very fussy person, just loves it here. The staff are very caring. Everyone is very friendly and chatty.
Thank you, Fernlea House, for employing such caring staff.

The care and feeling of a nice place hits you as soon as you walk in the door. Smells lovely, and the staff is very friendly and welcoming. My aunt is well cared for and has no complaints. I am very confident in leaving her in the home as the staff are second to none; they know her needs and wants.
Lovely place - can't recommend it enough.

My mum had lived at Fernlea House for the past year. From the beginning, all the staff have shown care, compassion and professionalism to my mum and me. Staff take time to get to know the residents and understand their needs. My mum is treated with respect and kindness. There are regular activities
and all residents are encouraged to join in. The chefs provide nutritious, home-cooked meals. My mum is very settled in Fernlea and I can 100% recommend this care home.

My mother has settled into the care home. With the fantastic support from the care team, my mother is treated with dignity and respect by the team. She enjoys the interaction with staff and other residents as she was isolated in her house due to only having carers popping in 3 times a day for one hour.
She enjoys the activities and will participate with others. She is happy with her meals. I am happy to see she is kept clean and appropriately dressed.

Choosing a home for a parent is like choosing a school for your child. You feel bad they need to go into care and you know your decision has to be the right one.

I looked at so many homes and Fernlea was not my first choice but when I visited it, I did not think it was the poshest I had seen , but

straight away I liked how the staff were with the residents.

I have been in homes where they are left to vegetate. At Fernlea mum is taken out in their mini bus for wee trips, she is involved in practical things, making cards, baking, and surprisingly I hear she even joins in the sing songs. They celebrate residents birthdays have entertainment and have a church service once a month where they can request their favourite hymns.

Mum has Alzheimer's and I constantly worried about her before I don't any more. But it's not about me it's all about her and to see her happier and know she feels safe now means a lot, so thank you Fernlea here's one who think you do a great job x

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.647)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.647) out of 10 for Fernlea House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 12 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.847 for Fernlea House is calculated as follows: ( (123 Excellents x 5) + (20 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 144 Ratings = 4.847
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Fernlea House is based on 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 36 registered maximum number of service users is 7.2, which has been reached with 12 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
