Harwood House is a highly praised 30 resident care home with nursing in a beautiful property in Cookham Dean, Maidenhead. Their philosophy of care colours everything they do, from the way the home looks and feels, to the way they organise the care they provide. It is based on a belief that there are three vital components in creating excellence in a nursing home.

These are:

• The physical environment of the home
• The standard of care the home provides
• The person-centred approach that the home adopts.

In 2010 Harwood House completed a £2m development programme designed to create an environment that is regarded by all who see, work or live in it, as extraordinary. Everything from the fabric and furnishings, to the lighting and even the pictures on the walls has been selected to stimulate and create interest whilst offering the ultimate in home comfort. All in all, Harwood House has been designed to increase the residents’ pleasure and sense of being at home.

The standard of care is a vital factor in creating excellence in a nursing home. And its standards must be equal to the exceptional quality of the home’s physical comfort. That’s why they’re committed to extensive training – training far in excess of what the authorities require of us – in order to develop new ways of delivering care that puts the needs and wants of individual residents above any other consideration. To achieve this they operate a system of care called the Key Worker scheme. This means they get to know individual residents' care needs and focus on them being met.

The Review Score of 8 (maximum of 10) for Harwood House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 6 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Harwood House in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.1 out of 5 from 1 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.903 for Harwood House is calculated as follows: ( (65 Excellents x 5) + (7 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 72 Ratings = 4.903

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 3.143 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Harwood House is based on 1 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 = 3

    2. Target of 7 positive Reviews (35 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 1 Reviews ÷ 7 Target = 0.143

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

The palliative care my mother received in the last days of her life was exceptional. It was a great comfort to me that she was looked after with such care. All the staff, without exception, were compassionate and concerned and at the same time efficient, calling for the doctor, providing her with medication and looking after her physical needs to keep her clean and comfortable. They all went the extra mile to ease her passing after she had suffered two strokes which may have been caused by her cancer. We visited every day for a period of ten days at all different times and were welcomed, offered drinks and even hugged. The nurses and staff were always available to discuss how my mother was. On the day of her death, my sister and I were phoned as we all live over an hours drive away to come to the home and we were able to spend the last two hours of her life holding and talking to her until she peacefully just stopped breathing. Our grateful thanks to everyone involved in her care.

I regularly observe the delivery of outstanding care and genuine compassion towards the residents. The staff working at Harwood House 'make the difference', my experience is that they all contribute to the effective and safe environment that I trust my mother to be in. The staff tailor their approach to the needs and or capacity of the resident they are assisting. I am aware that the majority of staff are long serving, this allows rapport and trust to be built, ensuring residents are comfortable with those staff caring for them. My mum's quality of life has improved substantially since taking up occupancy at Harwood House. I could not have asked for any better.

Overall I think Harwood House is very worth while including on a short list of care homes worthy of consideration. From the personal experience I have had in them caring for my Aunt and Uncle I would highly recommend the home. The level of care and general facilities are excellent, they really do have the residents welfare at the core of what they do. Please go and see for your self.

Harwood House is without doubt 'gracious living'. It does what it says on the tin and provides residents with a place they can call home. There is no better accolade than to hear your loved one say every time you see them or ring them... "I'm so happy here!" I only wished we lived nearer and could play a more active roll in the life of the Home. It is a great relief that even though we live a distance away, we can totally rely on the staff to provide the best level of care and attention. Thank you.

Harwood House has looked after mum for the last 18 months, showing her the upmost kindness, support and dignity. Everyone who works here is faultless with a few care workers going above and beyond to make mum feel at home. Mum has vascular dementia so life is full of challenges, but these are dealt with in the most professional way. I couldn't recommend then enough. Thank you.
