Harwood House Luxury Care is a highly praised 31 room care home with nursing in a beautiful property in Cookham Dean, Maidenhead, with magnificent views over Windsor and the Thames Valley. Their philosophy of luxury care colours everything they do, from the way the home looks and feels, to the way they organise the care they provide.

In 2010 Harwood House completed a £2m development programme designed to create an environment that is regarded by all who see, work or live in it, as extraordinary. My Dad was a resident of Harwood House for two weeks respite care following a fall. He was very fragile following a short stay in hospital and struggling to cope due to fatigue, loss of mobility and concussion. We will forever be grateful to the team at Harwood House for the exemplary level of care
Dad received. As an independent soul, he preferred to stay in his room a majority of the time but there was no pressure on him to 'join in' and care was on hand to ensure he took medication, exercised and ate. Thankfully, and partially due to the excellent physio treatment arranged for him during his stay, his physical strength improved such that he could return to his home environment. Without doubt, it was the exceptional care and safe environment that enabled him to recuperate quickly. The whole team were fantastic and just so kind to my Dad ensuring he was monitored without smothering him. Everyone we spoke with was extremely responsive and helpful. Thank you.

Mum has stayed in Harwood House three times this year for respite. Each time I've felt comforted by the staff and care that Harwood House provides Mum. Mum feels stimulated in the company of others and this has been beneficial to her mental health.
The care home is in lovely surroundings and has been
peaceful and quiet when I've visited. The food has been well prepared and Mum has enjoyed each one of her stays.
Thank you very much for your kind support and care.
Reply from Lucinda Tabram, Assistant Manager at Harwood HouseThank you very much for your review, it is greatly appreciated and we are glad that your mum enjoys the care and community of our nursing home, we strive to maintain high standards and also to ensure everyone is happy and safe, kind regards Cindy Tabram Deputy Manager

After a week in hospital I came to Harewood House for a respite period, I enjoyed a ground floor room overlooking the garden with all the up to date facilities
The staff were very helpful, the food was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. I was relaxed and happy and soon responded to their
care.
After three weeks I was well enough to return home and manage on my own.
I should like to thank the matron and staff for all their help, I would have no hesitation in returning at any time.

We would like to express our thanks to all the staff of Harwood House for the love and care given to my friend in the time that he was with you. We were so very sorry to lose him but know that the great care that he was given and being in such lovely surroundings must have helped him to reach the great
age he did. Thank you all so much.

My mother has been a resident in Harwood House Nursing home for just over 3 years.
It was a very difficult decision to make choosing the right home for her to spend her final years but once I had visited Harwood House I knew she would be very happy there.
The home has incredibly high standards and
always feels very homely.
My mother is very well cared for by delightful nursing staff and carers.
The well-being staff organise a variety of activities for the residents to participate in catering for physical needs, mental and social needs.
It has been extremely difficult for the well-being team with the lockdowns but they have risen to the challenge and been excellent organising video calls with family and friends.
The home has an excellent chef who caters for the residents individual dietary needs.
The admin staff send out regular updates of any changes in the home.
Reply from Michael Fitch, Director at Harwood HouseAnne, Thank you for your kind words about the carers, nurses, well-being team, chef and the incredibly high standards the team maintains at Harwood House. We are encouraged that your mother has been happy at Harwood House.

By 2017 it was clear that Mum, a feisty 90-year old with Alzheimer's, was no longer capable of looking after herself and the search began for a suitable care home. Harwood House appeared to be a cut above the others, and Mum became a resident.
Subsequent experience amply confirmed initial impressions:
a glorious location, large and comfortable communal rooms, excellent food, and social contact and activities to provide the stimulation that Mum needed. She came to think of Harwood House as 'my home'.
The staff deserve special praise - never too busy to talk about Mum's progress, right on top of the latest developments while keeping a clear perspective on Mum's long-term decline, and ensuring loving personal relations with residents. They kept the family in close touch during Mum's final weeks.
The management did their best to keep ahead of the unsatisfactory official guidance on Covid-19.
In sum: Expensive, but excellent - Mum could not have been better provided for in her final years.

Harwood House is an exceptional care home. My grandmother has been in there now for 2 years and I cannot fault any aspect of the care home, its staff or its activities/services at all. The staff are wonderful and very attentive and caring and always available whenever needed for updates and information
on how Nan is doing. The services/activities provided are very engaging for Nan and the other residents. I know she is very happy and enjoying her time there and is being looked after with the utmost care and attention.

Because I live 12000km away it is great to know that my father is in the best of care. In the years he has been there the staff have been very stable. He is loved, entertained (despite Covid lockdowns) and looked after beautifully. While no one wants to be in a care home if you have to choose one for
a relative this is excellent.

I couldn't be happier with the care that my grandfather receives, he has been at the home for years now and I have great peace of mind knowing how well he is cared for and catered for.
Harwood House is a beautiful home, the rooms are well equipped and have lovely views of the grounds. The staff are
wonderful and nothing is too much trouble.
I have been particularly impressed with the entertainment and enrichment program on offer, so much thought goes into ensuring every resident is looked after to the highest standard. Harwood House offers a premium level of care, with great attention to detail.
I would highly recommend Harwood House to friends and family.

Right from our initial enquiry we have been very impressed by Harwood House. I had been made aware of the place by a friend. We had a very quick response back to our request for a visit while looking for a place for my father - who had become very frail after several falls and consequent hospital stays.
We did visit two other places but Harwood House stood out. All of our questions were answered very satisfactorily and we decided on a ground floor room so that my father can look out on the garden as at home. He has only been in three weeks now but nothing has been too much trouble. The level of care in this time has been excellent. Any questions I have are quickly answered and things actioned where necessary. All the staff are very caring and friendly. Having my father settled there has certainly put my mind at rest as I know he is being well cared for.
Reply from Michael Fitch, Director at Harwood HouseDear Janet, thank you for taking the time to review Harwood House. It is lovely to hear that your father has settled well at Harwood House and is enjoying a ground floor room looking out at the garden as at home. It helps that your mind is at rest knowing he is being cared for with excellence. The staff and leadership team are always encouraged when our caring, friendly and responsive values are observed in action.

I was quite unwell when I arrived at the Harwood House from hospital. I soon realised the home was a clean, caring and loving home where the staff are both friendly and eager to do their best for you. Although we are still in lockdown the general atmosphere is happy and relaxed. The lovely grounds are
being groomed for the summer season and already look good. The facilities at Harwood House are able to cater for all our needs, medical or social. To summarise Harwood is a beautiful, efficiently run care home.

My Step-Father has been a resident at Harwood House for the past four years, the staff are kind and considerate and he is looked after exceptionally well.
I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a home from home for their loved ones.
The setting is beautiful, and the gardens are stunning,
with lovely views. The garden is very well looked after.
They have varied activities every day, tailored to the interests of the residents, and trips out when allowed.
All the meals are freshly cooked by the Chef who consults with the residents when menu planning.
I feel very reassured that my loved one is getting the best care.

My mother was very unwell and required the exceptional care that Harwood House sensitively and professionally provided. My father needed to rest and recuperate and again sensitive and professional care was provided by Harwood House. During the period of lockdown in the UK, the residents were protected
and updates were provided to family and friends who could not visit their loved ones.
The staff, care provision, accommodation and daily activities - all in such a stunning setting - make Harwood House the first choice for care for our family.

My father spent the last two years of his life in the care of Harwood House. We had looked at a number of residential care homes before making our final decision - but we knew as soon as we visited Harwood that we had found his new home. Dad was suffering from the early stages of dementia and so the
transition from his home of 30 plus years could have been both difficult and painful but this was not the case. From the moment Dad arrived, he felt that he was "home from home" and our family all felt a tremendous sense of relief that Dad was safe and happy. Harwood House is a very special nursing home. There was always some activity or another, visits to local tourist attractions or boat trips on the Thames - the residents were as active as they wanted to be. But what stood out the most and what I was most impressed with was the staff - kind, courteous and respectful to everyone, all the time. Harwood House is a beautiful building but the staff make it a wonderful home.

I first came across Harwood House a few years ago when a friend of mine needed end of life care. I was asked by her sister who lives 299 miles away to find a suitable place and I found Harwood House. Whilst the experience was sad, it was also calm and reassuring.
The kindness we felt then was amazing
not just to the patient but also to us. When, earlier this year, a friend needed long term care I had no doubt which care home I thought best but we also did look at others. Some I would not even take her into. No one could have known what a year of Covid 19 would mean to care homes but through all of this, it has always been fun to visit Harwood House whenever possible. The excellent en suite accommodation and the caring and efficient staff are welcoming and friendly. The food is great and the residents' tastes are individually catered for. The nursing care if required is kind and efficient. My friend has now been there for almost a year and neither she nor I have any regrets.

My mother has lived at Harwood House for 6 years following a diagnosis of dementia. From the outset, we were extremely impressed with the building and grounds. Harwood is a large period property with modern extensions situated in an enviable position. The landscaped gardens with views to Windsor and
beyond are a real bonus. Many rooms have access to the terraces which was of great benefit to Mum when she was mobile. The friendly and helpful staff have always provided a high level of care tailored to her needs. Rooms are spacious and standards of cleanliness high. Despite Mum's decline in communication and mobility, she is included in appropriate activities. We were particularly impressed with the lengths staff went to when her 100th birthday had to be 'online' due to current restrictions. The kitchen produced a wonderful cake and her room looked beautiful. We would thoroughly recommend Harwood and are so pleased that a space was available for her when she needed to go into care.

My mother has lived at Harwood House for well over 2 years. The staff are and have always been fantastic, caring, understanding and professional. They have such a positive outlook, know their residents very well and have a good sense of humour. The home has provided a variety of activities to cater
to the different interests of the residents, ranging from music, quizzes, creative art, visits from children and farms, and social and local history, to name a few. There is an excellent wellbeing team, who help Mum to look and feel her best. The management and nursing teams are always ready to listen and discuss any concerns that crop up. There is a very low turnover of staff.
Throughout this year the safety and health of the residents has been the most important factor; we have been able to see Mum whenever possible, which has been so appreciated, and I am looking forward to my Christmas visit. There is a wonderful calendar of events planned for December, as is the case for every month.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.686)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.686) out of 10 for Harwood House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 12 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.886 for Harwood House is calculated as follows: ( (124 Excellents x 5) + (16 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 140 Ratings = 4.886
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Harwood House is based on 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 35 registered maximum number of service users is 7, which has been reached with 12 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

With a sense of humour, she cheerfully and efficiently keeps the show on the road supported by a very good team. Morag has seen the house and gardens transformed in the last fifteen years to be the safe and elegant home it is today.
