This Nursing home first opened its doors over 25 years ago and has been offering nursing care to the elderly residents of Hitchin ever since. The staff team are part of a skilled team made up of the Operations Director, two clinical leads, registered nurses and health care assistants, supported by housekeepers, general assistants, cook, administrator and activity coordinator. This home also specialises in dementia care.

Both the CQC inspection (February 2022) and Hertfordshire provider inspection in March 2025 showed a 'GOOD' rating for this home.

The house itself dates back to the Victorian era when it housed Cambridge University's Girton college. The ground floor rooms are suitably grand in scale with large windows in the drawing room and day room overlooking the peaceful gardens. The first floor provides accommodation offering wonderful views across the town and onto the countryside beyond. The lower ground floor offers further lounges and bedrooms, some with direct access to the garden. This location is also conveniently situated in Hitchin, just 9 miles from Welwyn garden city.

The well-being and engagement co-ordinator ensures a varied programme of activities are on offer to residents. Special events and trips are organised throughout the year, such as Around the World food day, charity cake sales and the very popular postcard appeal. They encourage families and friends to input into life history books for the residents to help keep their memories alive. The home also utilises a 'Buddi' interactive projection stimulus and engagement system providing a variety of therapies such as reminiscence, physio, music and cognitive therapy.

My friend was placed in the home as considered end of life in December 2019. My experience of the home was always exceptional in every area from the nursing, caring, managers always totally focussed on the resident. The atmosphere was warm and friendly and nothing was too much trouble for anyone. The
accommodation was clean and comfortable. The mattress was changed as preferred. Always the highest standard of hygiene. Food and drink was excellent, tried to find suitable food for client. Manager so outstanding and helpful. Couldn't fault Benslow.

I have been living at Benslow for a few years now and I do not have a bad thing to say about it. My room is a great size and is always clean. I spend most days in one of the lounges which always has something going on or something to do. all the staff are great and happy to help me or even check I am
ok and are always about to help me if I need it. The manager minds me well and comes to see me every day to say hello. the cook makes me anything I ask for and often does me something different. Activities are done all the time here and she is always smiling.
I would recommend Benslow to anyone I am happy and well looked after here.

I have no idea on where to start with this little diamond of a care home, my sister and I found it through Google and how grateful I am we did. The care my mum received was outstanding and the staff couldn't have done any more for my mum, the care team are so attentive. The activities team created an
activities rota that was everything my mum loved about her life and she engaged with them so well it was beautiful to witness.
The manager is very hands-on and helped us every step of the way even coming in late evening to see me just to check all was ok. The whole staff team work wonderfully together and are very much a team. The newly decorated lounge is absolutely stunning and the garden has just had an overhaul and looks wonderful. Mum's room was also newly decorated and very spacious and the manager said we can do absolutely anything we wanted to it so long as they could get the needed equipment in.
I cannot recommend this home or staff team enough as they simply are amazing.

We have found Benslow Nursing Home to be very friendly, providing good care for the residents.

Qualified nursing staff provide onsite medical care 24/7, backed up by a dedicated local GP who visits regularly.

Individual dietary requirements are fully catered for including assistance with feeding.

The

manager and all the staff are very cheerful and always caring. An energetic Well-being Co-ordinator who ‘thinks outside the box’ arranging visits by local organisations to give talks, music and social gatherings, and garden parties etc.
Relatives are invited to many of the social events and regular meetings with the Manager for updates and to raise any issues and suggestions.

The finance manager has provided support to relatives when cash flow has been problematic and arranged payments of nursing care entitlements.

Residents care is recorded using latest technology, which helps with deputyship reporting requirements.

Benslow Nursing Home has been our mother's home now for over three years. It was an emergency admittance, and it has been an emotional roller coaster due to the nature of her illness Alzheimers. The manager has been supportive throughout. The carers and all the staff have been kind, considerate and
open to any relevant discussions to resolve issues when necessary.
We have found the family meetings a good way to communicate with both staff and families. The newsletter is very good too! Family social events well organised and fun. Kitchen area in the day room needs improvement and more spare supplies.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.403)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.403) out of 10 for Benslow Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.803 for Benslow Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (62 Excellents x 5) + (13 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 76 Ratings = 4.803
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.6 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Benslow Nursing Home is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.6
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 35 registered maximum number of service users is 7, which has been reached with 7 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
