I would like to express my gratitude to everyone at Brownscombe Care Residences for the dignity, kindness and respect shown to my father during his time there. The nursing team in his final days kept us informed and provided comfort and dignity and we are grateful for the professionalism and empathy

After a long spell in hospital and a deterioration in his health and mobility we had to make the decision to find a nursing home for my father. Because of his requirements, suitable homes were hard to find but we were very fortunate to be offered a room at Brownscombe. The introduction by the very professional
management team allayed many of our initial concerns and the nursing staff gave 100% to ensure my dad had all his needs covered in a very fraught settling in period. Their commitment to his well being ensured that when he had a couple of medical issues they were dealt with and resolved swiftly and with the utmost care.
His room is spacious and well appointed with all the facilities to make his stay as enjoyable as his condition will allow. The nursing and caring staff are very attentive and go out of their way to make close bonds with the residents, making them as comfortable as possible. The food is varied and tasty. The setting and gardens are breathtakingly beautiful.
Reply from Kevin Lorimer, Head of Hotel Services at Brownscombe Care ResidencesThank you for your kind review, we are delighted you are happy with our service - I will pass this on to the staff. And, yes, aren't we lucky to work in such a beautiful setting.

Having to find a care home for a loved one is never an easy experience, but the moment you walk through the doors at The Brownscombe the staff and surroundings fill you with confidence that it is a very safe environment where the residents are given the very best of care. It is spotlessly clean, the
staff, without exception, are friendly, professional, knowledgeable and are always on hand to answer any questions you may have. The food is excellent, the rooms are bright & airy, there are many varied activities for the residents to participate in and the resident care exemplary - what more could you ask for.

Brownscombe Lodge is a very attractive building in a superb location. Because of it's location up a hill, the air is always fresh and welcoming. My room was comfortable and well designed with a door opening onto the downstairs entrace so I could open it when weather was hot. The staff were very caring
and anxious to please and were always friendly despite being super busy. Overall I would highly recommend Brownscombe. It feels very homely.

My sister has been a resident of Brownscombe for some time now. She does at times exhibit challenging behaviour but is always treated by staff with care and empathy.
Nobody wants their loved one to be in a care home but every time I leave Brownscombe it is in the knowledge that my sister is being
well care for. All the staff are welcoming to me, and I feel comfortable raising concerns with them and they are always positive and responsive.
The activity staff work hard to provide interesting things for the residents to do. They like to include families and friends in events and activities at the home which is also very welcome.

My brother always looks very well kept with clean bedding, fresh clothes and he looks clean.
The
meal choices are excellent.
Grounds and garden are lovely too.
Very happy.

If you have your love one in this home, move them. Resident was medicated without any reference to family or POA. Care levels were inadequate and visiting external service raised safeguarding concerns. Staff care reports inadequate and training very poor, movement and handle of residence very poor.
Food and service hygiene very poor. Safety system not working properly and alarm calls ignored. Now moved and residency in another home and a completely different person. Don't be fooled by the 4* looks, high turnover in care and agency staff and residence left alone for long periods of time.
Reply from Ana-Marie Mitu, Deputy Manager at Brownscombe Care ResidencesThank you for sharing your feedback. At Brownscombe Care Residences, our priority is always the safety, dignity and wellbeing of the people we support. In this instance, the resident's needs changed significantly, and following input from external professionals, it was agreed that a more specialist setting would better meet those needs. This decision was not taken lightly, and we worked closely with all relevant parties to support the transition. We take any concerns seriously and follow clear protocols around medication, care delivery and safeguarding. We also strive to maintain open, respectful communication with families and appointed representatives, particularly during complex situations. We are saddened to hear that your experience has left you with such a negative view of our service. We are proud of our dedicated team and the positive feedback we regularly receive, but we also know there is always room to listen and improve.

"Brownscombe" The building, facilities and the amazing staff far exceed expectations. This is a friendly home from home environment. For patients who can, there is always a range of activities and wonderful events put on. The nursing care is exemplary, the cleaning staff and food are all cooked, and
the premises is fantastic. Visitors are cared for too, and in emergency fit waters. They even fed me during my mother's last days. Her end of life care and my time were given in loving care & support. It was more than ever hoped for.

Our Aunt was discharged to Brownscombe after a very long stay in hospital. It was a very upsetting time for her as she was unable to return to her previous care home of 10 years, which she loved, as she now needs more specialist nursing care which they couldn't provide.
We were very worried that she
would be unable to adapt to a new home but due to the attention and care all of the staff have shown her and her beautiful surroundings she has settled in surprisingly well.
The staff at all levels are very welcoming, approachable and always keen to deal with any issues that arise quickly and efficiently, nothing ever seems too much trouble.
We are very much hoping this can be a permanent placement for our aunt as we are sure with Brownscombe's continued care she will be very happy there.

My mum stayed at the Brownscombe Care Residency for about four weeks on end of life care. In that time she was so well looked after by all the nursing staff, who were always on hand to deal with any questions I or any other members of our family had. When mum first arrived at the home she was amazed
at the facilities on offer like the cinema room and salon. As mum's health deteriorated she was always treated with care and dignity until she sadly passed away.

We were given this care home as one of three options on discharge from hospital after a stroke. It was definitely the best of the three. The management team is approachable and friendly and the care staff are gentle and caring. Any time there was an issue this could be discussed and corrected promptly.
The entertainment team are delightful and tries and keep people busy. The rooms vary in size, price and convenience for the communal areas, so you "pay your price".

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.724)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.724) out of 10 for Brownscombe Care Residences is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 32 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 31 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.724 for Brownscombe Care Residences is calculated as follows: ( (302 Excellents x 5) + (59 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) + (10 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 373 Ratings = 4.724
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Brownscombe Care Residences is based on 31 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 55 registered maximum number of service users is 11, which has been reached with 31 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
