The Pines Care & Nursing Home delivers the highest standards of care and support in a warm and welcoming setting. The home offers nursing, residential and dementia care in the popular seaside town of Hove on the north side of Furze Hill. It is within walking distance of the centre of Brighton and the seafront and benefits from good transport links.

The well-established care team works closely with families and loved ones and has strong community links that include an excellent relationship with related health services and professionals. The care home has recently been refurbished and features a spacious, sunny terrace, Elegance Hair Salon and Coffee Club bistro. The decor is sympathetic to the original features of the early 20th-century Edwardian building, providing a homely setting for people requiring both residential care and those with more complex nursing needs.

The Pines is known not only for its compassionate care but also for the remarkable residents who call it home. Among them was Lady Muriel Dowding, animal rights advocate and founder of the Beauty Without Cruelty campaign. Another famed resident was Bernard Jordan, who made headlines in 2014 as the “Great Escaper” when, aged 89, he left The Pines unannounced to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. His spirited journey captured the nation's heart and inspired the 2023 film The Great Escaper, starring Michael Caine.

My Mother moved to Gracewell of Hove after her husband (my Dad) died in December 2015. From the first day, she was made to feel welcome at home and treated with such dignity that I felt humbled. The room, food, and care given was excellent. My Mum died on 6/10/16 in the early hours of the morning. I
didn't make it to her in time which I will feel guilty about forever, but your staff were there and helped her. Thank you!

My father passed away in hospital on 2nd August 2016 before this he was a resident in Gracewell of Hove for 10 years. He had communication difficulties as he was profoundly deaf but he was happy and was well supported by staff there.

A super place having supported my wife with her mother. The manager was so helpful and took personal care of advising and then settling the mother in law in. All staff are lovely and caring. Lots of activities to do. Nice surroundings. We visited 12+ care homes and this was the best. Highly recommended.

My mother aged 95 was due for a spell of respite care in Gracewell of Hove in late August and September, but sustained a minor fall on 4 August in her sheltered flat nearby. Gracewell were extremely responsive to my request for help on 5 August and agreed to take her in as a resident immediately. They
arranged for a home assessment visit that morning and provided a wheelchair for the short transfer. Neither they nor I expected this to be a short-term end of life admission, but when it became clear quite quickly and surprisingly that my mother was in terminal decline, Gracewell staff could not have been more caring and accommodating. They coped with times when she was distressed with patience and always put her welfare first. When a palliative care regime appeared necessary, they liaised very efficiently with my mother's GP practice, and this enabled her to die in a dignified and peaceful way, largely free from distress and pain. I am extremely grateful to Gracewell's management and nursing staff for undertaking this unexpected burden so uncomplainingly and effectively. It was a shame that my mother never recovered sufficiently to enjoy Gracewell's food and social facilities, but I was impressed with the standards of these from what I saw. I shall always be grateful to Gracewell for helping my mother to die in the right way and will unhesitatingly recommend its services to others.

My mother spent the last year of her life here and she received excellent care. Nevertheless, I hesitate to recommend the home because the administration and management are so poor that I fear the standard of care may not be maintained.


The current state of affairs at the home is illustrated by

the fact that the person currently named as manager on this website left over 8 months ago and there have been at least 2 different persons in charge since. The first of these managers was very committed and we were impressed by her strong vision for the home. Within months she was gone. We weren't told when or why she left but it seemed to coincide with the re-branding of the home.


It is with some trepidation that we chose a nursing home for our mother. We are grateful that the home was able to match the high aspirations that we had for her care. It is a tribute to the professionalism of the service staff. They deserve an equally professional management team. Let’s hope they get it soon.

I have been so impressed with Gracewell in Hove. I have visited a few care homes and have often found them lacking in things. Gracewell in my eyes is how I would wish all care homes to be like. All the staff seem to really care and there is a bright and loving atmosphere through the building. They
go the extra mile.

This is the only nursing home in which I have been a resident but the ones which I have visited, this seems the best. It is attractively furnished with pleasant bedrooms. The nursing staff are excellent, taking trouble to provide that extra help.
I could not take much interest in the food but it seemed
good and varied with a menu providing main courses and snack as alternatives.
