I came here for rehab following a hospital admission, I was met and welcomed in more than the way I was expected. Although I was not a resident I was treated with dignity and respect. The choice and the amount of meals to choose from had good variety and something for everyone's taste and diet requirements. Daily activities were on offer or the option to remain in your room was respected. Everyone on the staff was extremely efficient and more than pleasant. They all without exception made my stay exceptionally good.

It was a pleasure to have you stay with us for rehab following your hospital admission. We are so glad to hear that your stay exceeded your expectations and you felt respected by all our staff. I will make sure your lovely words are passed on to the team.

Although my wife sadly passed away in September I am welcome to visit John Wills whenever I like. I am warmly welcomed by the staff, be it carers, staff or management and have been offered the opportunity to volunteer in the future if I desire. Such is the friendly, welcoming caring nature of the staff.

Reply from Emily Pimm, Social Care Deputy Manager at John Wills House

We are so sorry for your loss, our thoughts are with you. We are pleased that you feel so welcome here at John Wills House and would of course be very happy if you wanted to take up the opportunity to volunteer here should you ever wish to in the future. We are very proud of all our staff and happy you have found everyone friendly and caring.

We needed somewhere for Mum to go for a period of convalescence following hip surgery.
John Wills House was able to provide this care to a very high standard. Mum was treated with dignity and respect and given the level and support that Mum required.
We were very impressed by the support given by the physiotherapy team. They gave Mum the necessary exercises to do along with lots of encouragement which has gone a long way to help with Mum's recovery.
The food was very of a very high standard which was an added bonus.
We did have a couple of minor concerns but these were addressed promptly.

Would not hesitate in recommending John Wills House in the future to anyone needing a friendly, safe, and responsive place for convalescence and rehabilitation.

Before my mother moved in for end of life care I was offered a tour of the place she would be staying. All staff were friendly, couldn't do enough and were very kind. My mother moved in on a Friday and passed away the following Wednesday. I met many staff all of which were able to give full nursing or carer care of the highest standard. I was very impressed and relieved my mother had excellent end of life care. Thank you.

In February/March 2023, I spent seven days at John Wills House. This followed a three-week stay in the hospital for bladder surgery.
At all times, I found the staff to be empathic, caring and mindful of my needs. They allowed me to do things at my own pace, with gentle encouragement along the way. I would not hesitate to recommend John Wills House as a "halfway house" between hospital and home, and I feel I have benefited hugely from the care and support provided.

The CQC rating of "outstanding" is well deserved.

I was a resident for just over two months on discharge from hospital. On the whole staff were very friendly and helpful and it felt like a happy place. The food was very good and the environment lovely. This period coincided with a few residents contracting Covid which restricted some activities and meals together but at other times these were very enjoyable. Staff were not always quick to respond to my calls for assistance as they seemed short-staffed at times. I had a couple of periods of confusion and at these times I felt staff were not as understanding as they could have been. I was often prepared for bed earlier than I would have chosen but on the whole everyone made my stay there quite pleasant at a difficult time for me.

My stay in John Wills House has only been for three weeks between discharge from hospital and moving in to a new apartment, hence no access to my computer.

My stay has been very comfortable and the staff are very friendly, thoughtful and helpful. The food is excellent. The permanent staff are all better than the agency staff (weekends, mainly) who limit themselves to bare essentials.

The environment that the staff create for Mum to live in is very good. Mum enjoys living in John Willis House and often shows how nice everyone is, she also enjoys the food.

How lovely to hear that you’re pleased with the environment at John Wills House. As I’m sure you’re aware, our mantra is that the resident’s do not live in our place of work, we work in their home – and that is something we practice with pride day in, day out. We’re so glad she is happy here and it’s also great to know she loves the food! We will pass your kind words on to the team.

Fantastic - can't give enough praise and thanks to everyone at The Orchards. The first two weeks were extremely challenging and stressful for everyone but the wonderful staff quickly learned what my father's triggers were and distracted him. He is now very happy and has many friends. He helps with the gardening and takes part in all the activities. We are delighted.

Thank you for leaving such a wonderful review, Sarah. We understand how difficult those first few weeks can be and we are so happy that we have been able to make this transition even just a little bit easier. Mum was admitted at a difficult time due to the pandemic, so is hard to review fairly. They welcomed her and the accommodation was good but smaller than we'd hoped for. She previously had temporarily stayed at another care home until a place was free and there the facility was much more modern. The technology at John Wills House The Willows is not good and the staff don't appear to have the time to help (perhaps understaffed?). In all okay, but could do better.

Reply from Wendy Leaman, Care Home Manager at John Wills House

Thank you for your feedback, it is most appreciated. I am sorry we have not met your expectations on this occasion. We will look into your comments about the technology issue and aim to rectify this moving forward.

Well-run and compassionate. Nobody likes to see their relative in a care home, but I don't think you could ask for better. Excellent understanding of dementia, the attitude is consistently we see the person and not the illness.

My mum was admitted to Beeches at John Wills House in April 2019 for end-of-life care. Following several months of dedicated nursing, she rallied and was moved to Willows for long-term nursing. All rooms are comfortable, well equipped and always spotlessly clean. Her care throughout has been outstanding. Daily personal and medical care and nutrition are excellent. Mum is happy, feels safe and greatly values all the staff such as management, nursing and housekeeping, who are kind, respectful and responsive to all her needs. In her words “They are my family now.” Throughout the very stressful months of the Covid-19 pandemic, all the John Wills House staff have been amazing. Leadership has been exceptional and at no time, especially during the long months of closure to visitors, have I felt concerned for mum’s well-being. For this, I'm eternally grateful. Staff go above and beyond to create many special times, all of which make John Wills House a home in the family sense of the word, not just as an establishment. Thank you all.
