Eshcol House Nursing Home is a wonderful place to live, located in one of the most beautiful parts of the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The property is situated a very short distance from the beach, and the views from many of the rooms are truly exceptional, from the Portscatho beaches 'Tatums' and 'The Porth' across Gerrans Bay with the famous Gull Rock, Nare Head and Dodman Point in full view. The gardens are pretty with numerous places and opportunities to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views.

The team are very pleased to have counted many former locals from the village amongst their residents and they feel a special bond with the community.

The very friendly and proficient management team and all the lovely staff have a wide range of expertise and knowledge, and everyone really enjoys working together to make every day special for the lovely residents.

Whilst being a homely environment, Eshcol House is well stocked with any necessary equipment to help residents who need more help to make the most of their day. There are dedicated activities staff to ensure everyone has a variety of things to do, to encourage the lovely communal feel the home has developed over the years.

The local GP surgery is around a very short corner and the home has a named doctor who is their contact. On admission your relative will be transferred to this practice and will meet the doctor at the earliest opportunity for a review.

Get in touch with the team to arrange to meet them and see what they're like.

My neighbour was admitted to Eshcol as he was very ill in the hospital. During his stay, he was well looked after but sadly died after a few weeks. He was taken there for palliative care, and I think they were good. I went to visit him with his wife, and we could go in as often as we wanted. They were
all so lovely, and he seemed comfortable and pain-free. Thank you to the staff.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for your kind words, Pauline. Giving someone a good death is very important to us and we pride ourself on our palliative care standards. I have shared your review with the team and it's given us a lift to our day.

I cannot rate Eshcol House Nursing Home highly enough. Their care and attention go the extra mile. My godmother, due to her mental state, was unsettled when she first arrived from upcountry, and the staff have done everything in their capability to welcome and settle her. All the staff, kitchen, carers
and all other persons who work within the home are always there, and very attentive to any needs or requests, and I would highly recommend this nursing home to anyone placing a loved one into care.

Excellent nurses, doctors, admin staff and health care personnel are always willing to help my mother and her needs. They are always on the phone keeping us up to date and giving the care our mother needs. Wonderful care home in a great location they even give Mother little treats such as days out and
haircuts which she likes. The staff there are so friendly and always willing to help visitors out. Whatever food Mother requests they always provide for her. It is always clean in the care home and the health care assistants and staff there are just amazing. The bonus is you can visit any time you want.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you for such a lovely review, Shaun. We are so pleased that your mum has settled so well and she always has a smile for us all. I will share your review with the team and it makes us happy to know that you feel we are meeting her needs so well.

Eschol House and all of the team have and continue to, operate with outstanding professionalism. We are always impressed by how genuine and caring everyone who works there is. On arrival, we are always welcomed with the warmest reception and always kept fully updated with any developments. Communications
are very frequent and consistent with exceptional high standards of care and consideration for our family member who is a resident. It is really remarkable that all of the staff are so diligent in the execution of their duties and they go to immeasurable lengths to ensure exceptional care. The team have always delivered to the highest standards and it is a pleasure to see such a fantastic system in operation particularly during the pandemic. It is a credit to them all for their outstanding performance. I would wholeheartedly recommend this care home and know from experience in the medical sector how special they are.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeIain, we were all so pleased and proud to read your comments. Our thanks for them. I can remember meeting your relative for the first time when I visited her in hospital and she then shared with me her initial worries about life in a care home. Those worries were soon put behind her and she continues to live happy times here.

My father has been living at Eschol for a number of years now. He initially struggled to settle and we were given some good advice from the staff. When lockdown hit, the staff worked tirelessly to protect and support him, keeping him Covid free. I appreciate how hard they must have worked during that
time. He has settled so well. Staff are friendly and engaging and always make us feel welcome as visitors. Dad's room is cosy and comfortable. His view is amazing and he loves looking out over the ocean! We feel very fortunate.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you for such a nice review. It is so rewarding watching a new resident, initially reluctant, gradually settle in and begin to like us. I keep reminding him to come down to the lounge to enjoy a G&T and TV but his room is so nice I don't blame him for wanting to stay put.

Staff at Eschol are warm, welcoming, hospitable, collaborative, and responsive. When residents express a faith or would just like to talk with a minister, staff ensure that they are referred to me. I am grateful to the Eshcol team for their willingness to work with me to ensure that the residents receive
spiritual care when they request it. Staff always accommodate my visits and do all they can to facilitate anything that I might need to serve the residents. The confidentiality of the patients is treated with the utmost respect by all concerned. Eschol is an outward-looking nursing home, an important part of the local community. I am pleased to be included in communications and invited to any open events and meetings.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for these lovely words which I have just read out to the team. You've been part of Eshcol life for many years now and even when Covid regulations stopped access in person you maintained contact with some of our residents with your lovely cards and notes, always knowing exactly what to say to them. Eshcol loves the fact that it is considered part of the local community and may this connection thrive and prosper.

The staff are always friendly and helpful. I am allowed to visit my dad whenever I like, provided it is prearranged, and we are left alone. If I need help, there is always someone willing to assist. Despite the high temperatures we have had over the last few weeks, the home is always comfortable. Dad
is happy, which makes me happy. He has a great view of the sea, which I know he likes.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for your kind review. I'm glad that you feel your dad is well looked after. The smile on his face when he sees you enter his room is like that credit card ad - priceless.

Mum was admitted in December 2019 for respite care and didn’t recover her strength enough to return home before the Covid 19 lockdowns struck and her former care at home became impossible to organise. Despite all the challenges that followed, the care staff have maintained a lovely warm family environment
where they don't just care for Mum, they care about her too.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for leaving these kind words which I will share with the team. The restrictions around Covid were a very difficult time for families and we know what a strain it has been on everyone with such limited contact. Thank you for all the understanding you have shown during those troubled times.

I found a lovely clean home with very friendly staff and very helpful, all questions were answered. You could visit any time and always greeted when you walked through the door. I think it is a lovely home for my brother-in-law to stay in and he is very happy there.

I have experienced nothing but a generous and kind attitude from all staff and management. I have been completely taken aback at how much effort goes into making my husband comfortable and safe. I cannot fault this home.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeIt is so lovely to read that we are doing everything so well. We do understand how difficult it is to hand over the care of our loved ones to a team of people, unknown at the time of entry. Care home selection is a bit of a gamble really, but here at Eshcol, we strive for the highest standards of care. Easy to type this, but it is something we all firmly believe in.

My aunt recently passed away after two years of tender care at Eshcol House Nursing Home. As next of kin, but living 150 miles away, it was important that I knew how she was doing. Thanks to the Care Control website I was able to do this on a daily basis and contact Eshcol House Nursing Home with any
concerns. On visiting it was apparent that she was well cared for and she was complimentary about her room, the staff, and the food. She was indulged and pampered, describing Eshcol House Nursing Home as her hotel! There is a definite caring ethos in the Home.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeFraser, it was so kind of you to leave such a generous review for the home and I will of course share it with the team. Your aunt was a real character, loving her chocolate and her 'Only Fools and Horses' watching. We did our best to ensure she was kept supplied with both. She really did insist she was in a luxury hotel having a good holiday and we are happy that she felt like that.

Eshcol House Nursing Home is a beautiful residency close to the picturesque village of Portscatho, overlooking Gerrans Bay on the Roseland Peninsula, where my wife who is living with Alzheimer's resides. The Manager and all his staff team are fabulous, caring, and attentive to all my lady's needs. They
all go above and beyond to create a comforting, safe environment in which she feels at home and well supported. I would thoroughly recommend Eshcol House to anyone looking to find the right place for their loved ones to be fully supported and cared for.

My husband has been a resident at Eshcol House Nursing Home for 8 years. He has received nursing care since he arrived, as he needs 2 person care plus experienced nursing care 24 hours. The nurses at Eschol House are excellent, professional, knowledgeable and caring and have a great relationship with
him. Everything is organised and timely. His room is kept tidy and clean, and all his personal needs are catered for. The management team are responsive and communicates with me regarding my husband's needs and any changes needed, as are the nursing staff too. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. When I have raised any issues, these are dealt with immediately and with excellent communication. All the staff including care assistants, wellbeing manager, chefs, cleaning and handymen are all dedicated to their work there. I have full confidence in that I know my husband is being looked after well with all his complex medical needs attended to. Thank you to all of you at Eshcol House Nursing Home.
Reply from Andrew Kirby, General manager at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you Annabel for taking the time to review our service. Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.759)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.759) out of 10 for Eshcol House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 42 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 42 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.759 for Eshcol House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (377 Excellents x 5) + (95 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 482 Ratings = 4.759
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Eshcol House Nursing Home is based on 42 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 31 registered maximum number of service users is 6.2, which has been reached with 42 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
