Eshcol House Nursing Home is a wonderful place to live, located in one of the most beautiful parts of the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The property is situated a very short distance from the beach, and the views from many of the rooms are truly exceptional, from the Portscatho beaches 'Tatums' and 'The Porth' across Gerrans Bay with the famous Gull Rock, Nare Head and Dodman Point in full view. The gardens are pretty with numerous places and opportunities to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views.

The team are very pleased to have counted many former locals from the village amongst their residents and they feel a special bond with the community.

The very friendly and proficient management team and all the lovely staff have a wide range of expertise and knowledge, and everyone really enjoys working together to make every day special for the lovely residents.

Whilst being a homely environment, Eshcol House is well stocked with any necessary equipment to help residents who need more help to make the most of their day. There are dedicated activities staff to ensure everyone has a variety of things to do, to encourage the lovely communal feel the home has developed over the years.

The local GP surgery is around a very short corner and the home has a named doctor who is their contact. On admission your relative will be transferred to this practice and will meet the doctor at the earliest opportunity for a review.

Get in touch with the team to arrange to meet them and see what they're like.

My grandad had great care during his time at Eschol. It was like a home away from home for his final few weeks. He was a bit nervous about going at the start but the staff really helped to settle him quickly. We had no worries about leaving him after our visits.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeI am so pleased that you feel your grandfather was well looked after here. You and the family were such regular visitors and were so bright and cheery that I know your visits must have improved the quality of his remaining life. The staff are the shining stars of Eshcol - they are so kind and caring - not just to the residents but also to the family and friends who visit. They quickly learnt our names and were so friendly and welcoming - even my dog was welcomed and made a fuss of!
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeYour words are so lovely, Tania, and they got read out to everyone just now. It was a pleasure to meet you in that short and sad time of you coming in and out of our doors so often. Thanks again for the lovely cake, and all the very best to you.

Excellent service for my dad, friendly staff good food etc, the only downside would like to see my dad out of bed more. Dad seems happy there and seems to get on with the staff ok even though he can be fussy and frustrated due to his stroke, whenever I've been there the staff are patient and friendly
to him. He does enjoy a chat etc that's why it would be nice for him once in a while to maybe be taken downstairs to enjoy the view etc. The home also was very kind in offering a lift to my mum on Xmas which was greatly appreciated by myself and my sister even though she couldn't come.

My Aunt always said that if she ever had to go into a care home it had to be Eshcol. She arrived in early April 2022, after 7 weeks of hospitals and another care home, all under Covid regulations - with no visitors allowed. She had amazing sight for a 96-year-old and really appreciated her room with
a view of the sea, of Carne and the Nare; places with which she had been familiar as a child. I took photographs of all the pots of flowers to show her. Her room was clean and, she said, disinfected regularly. She was eating a more varied diet than she had at home. Sadly. with her increased frailty and loss of mobility, she had had enough of life and began to withdraw into herself. She died peacefully at the beginning of October. Everyone I met at Eshcol was friendly, caring and kind. Aunty was right to want to go there.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you for your lovely words, Linda. Your aunt really did prefer her own company and was very content just to stay in her room. I reckon if I had a view like that I'd also be content to sit and gaze out and see the passing boats. Your aunt was a truly elegant lady and I know how much you miss her.

Eshcol House Nursing Home was our first choice when looking for somewhere right for our mother. The staff are friendly, helpful, warm and welcoming and always ready to answer any questions. Any problems were quickly resolved and our mother felt safe and secure knowing the staff were there whenever she
needed them. All the staff from junior to senior whatever their role within the home treated mum with respect and dignity and indeed humour. And I thank them all.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you for taking the time to leave a review. My brother was given a place at Eshcol House Nursing Home in September 2021 and was there until he sadly passed away in May 2022. He had very special needs and was given the best care and attention possible, all the care staff were so lovely to him, nothing was too much trouble, and his family will
be forever grateful to you all. With kindest regards.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you for your review. Your brother is remembered very fondly by all of us and I remember passing by his room, hearing a guitar being played; I knocked and went in and got treated to my own one-to-one concert. He was ever so good. But that was him - a good and kind and talented man.

My Dad was at Eschol House Nursing Home for several months as my aged mother couldn't cope at home on her own with his daily needs. The staff here were always very friendly to all our family visitors, while he was here he had his 90th birthday, the family were welcomed into the garden for a tea party
in the afternoon, the staff came around playing the guitar and singing "Happy Birthday" along with a birthday cake, what a surprise that was. Nothing was ever too much trouble for the staff on duty however busy they were, and this was made worse at times by Covid, if we phoned they would take the phone to my Dad in his room, we did get him his own mobile phone at one point, Christmas came, Mum was invited to lunch with them all, my Dad had a nice comfortable room with a fantastic sea view, he was, and we were all very well looked after, nothing was ever to much trouble, at my Dad's passing they gave us time to say our goodbyes, they were all very attentive, bless you all.

Eshcol House Nursing Home is located in one of the most beautiful coastal villages on the Roseland Peninsula and this is what appealed to my father and mother, in the first instance! Pre-admission arrangements were thorough and well-communicated and they were both admitted together to a beautiful, freshly-decorated
room with breathtaking views overlooking Gerrans Bay! Unfortunately, their whole residential stay at Eshcol House (July 2020 to November 2021) was effected by Covid-19 restrictions but the whole staff team worked tirelessly to maintain as much normality within the daily routine as possible and I always felt that Mum and Dad received bespoke, personalised care that respected their dignity, met all their needs and made them and our family members feel very much part of the Eshcol family.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you for such kind words, Angela. I remember on the days that my dog was at Eshcol she would make a beeline for your dad and his biscuit tin! It's such bad luck that your parents' stay was at the height of the epidemic as it did affect outings, visitors, and activities so very much. At least they had the best room in the place and, as you mentioned, you could just lose yourself looking out at that view all day. All the very best to you and the family.

My husband went to Eshcol House for one week's respite at the beginning of July 2022. Following a fall and broken hip the previous Christmas, he had become completely bed-bound and unable to do very much for himself. He was very lucky that a lovely ground-floor room was available for him, overlooking
the sea, and he also had a subscription TV service so could watch his beloved golf. He was very happy there and couldn't praise the staff enough - always cheerful and friendly.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review. We'd sometimes sit in there and watch the golf with him during our breaks and he was good company. All the very best in the future to you and the family.

Mum has been at Eshcol for more than 3 years since a bad fall left her immobile. She also suffers from other health issues. She is not necessarily the easiest of residents to please but in all her time there all the staff have been very helpful, caring and kind. Covid restrictions have made life challenging
for staff, residents and visitors but whilst maintaining all necessary precautions I have always felt that the staff have done everything they could to make life as 'normal' as possible for the residents. I have always been greeted by all staff with a smile and a friendly hello, even when it is necessary for that to be behind a mask. I think that the highest praise I can give is that, should I ever need the type of care which Eshcol provides, I would choose to be there myself.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing Home"I would choose to be there myself" - high praise indeed. Thank you so much for these kind words which I have just read aloud to the team. It's comforting to know that all our efforts are appreciated by the family. Your mum is our resident poet and her turn of phrase is fascinating; we always look forward to a new poem.

My 89-year-old Mum was placed in Eshcol House by the NHS for convalescent care until she is fit to go home after a fractured leg. While the location isn't close to us, it's beautiful when you get there and I feel that Mum's placement here has been very fortunate. All the staff have been lovely and they've
been providing a high standard of care for my Mum. She has especially enjoyed her outings organised by the Home and I have peace of mind that she's been safe during her convalescence.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for these kind words. It's a shame that our only available room was on the small side but at least it meant that her admission could go ahead. Hopefully, your mum will be homeward-bound soon but we'll always be here if you need us again.

Mum has been here a few months now and has settled in well. The staff are always cheerful and welcoming whilst looking after the residents (a difficult task) making it a home from home. Lovely place, fantastic views.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeWe are so pleased to read that you are happy with how your mum is faring. Eshcol House has been my husband's home since November 2020. I visit him every week and am always greeted with a warm welcome and a smile. The staff look after all his needs very well indeed. He enjoys some of the activities that have been put on for the residents, especially the musical events. He
likes the food and I have eaten there myself and it is delicious. There have been a few management turnovers since his arrival, but the current manager is very good. All staff are approachable, very friendly and always make my visits enjoyable in sometimes heartbreaking circumstances.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you for your review, Carole. We do understand how upsetting the visits can be and are happy that you find us supportive. Yes, our manager is now back firmly in the Eshcol saddle. In truth, she never left but was in the background for a while when two other managers came and went. She has been here for about 13 years and was always involved in the leadership of the home. I'm coming up to my ten-year Eshcol anniversary so that's a couple of us that have done our Eshcol time.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.762)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.762) out of 10 for Eshcol House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 46 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 46 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.762 for Eshcol House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (418 Excellents x 5) + (97 Goods x 4) + (13 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 529 Ratings = 4.762
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Eshcol House Nursing Home is based on 46 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 31 registered maximum number of service users is 6.2, which has been reached with 46 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
