Eshcol House Nursing Home is a wonderful place to live, located in one of the most beautiful parts of the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The property is situated a very short distance from the beach, and the views from many of the rooms are truly exceptional, from the Portscatho beaches 'Tatums' and 'The Porth' across Gerrans Bay with the famous Gull Rock, Nare Head and Dodman Point in full view. The gardens are pretty with numerous places and opportunities to relax and enjoy the breath taking views.
The team are very pleased to have counted many former locals from the village amongst their residents and they feel a special bond with the community.

The very friendly and proficient management team and all the lovely staff have a wide range of expertise and knowledge, and everyone really enjoys working together to make every day special for the lovely residents.

Whilst being a homely environment, Eshcol House is well stocked with any necessary equipment to help residents who need more help to make the most of their day. The home also have their own accessible minibus for trips out to places of interest, alongside dedicated activities staff to ensure everyone has a variety of things to do, to encourage the lovely communal feel the home has developed over the years.

The local GP surgery is round a very short corner and the home has a named doctor who is their contact. On admission your relative will be transferred to this practice and will meet the doctor at the earliest opportunity for a review.

Dad moved into Eshcol House at the end of August a bit apprehensive and concerned as he had never been to a care home before. He has settled in really well, and all the staff are very attentive and caring.

My mother-in-law has only been here for a few months. In that time the staff have been very caring and friendly, nothing is a problem. The food is excellent and when visiting you are offered a drink. The bedroom has a beautiful view over the bay. The kitchen staff adjust the menu for individual people
when that person doesn't want what is on the menu. The staff are always available to answer any questions and are happy to try any suggestions. My family would recommend this nursing home, can't praise them enough.

Mum settled in well to her bright little room with toilet for her two weeks respite. Excellent communication with that personal touch, which I appreciated. Mum's routine stuck, but despite being 99, going downstairs for meals etc, allowed her to keep her independence and mobility, enabling her to come
home to me and manage the stairs twice a day. Everyone was friendly and caring, with that real “family” feeling. Nursing care is good. Would recommend. The only thing I would say is that it's a shame there were no activities that Mum could’ve participated in, such as bingo, raffle, games, singing or exercises, but that obviously depends on the nursing needs of the clientele at the time. Mum is more than happy at 99 to spend her time snoozing in the chair. Although Mum wasn’t bothered, as poor sight, the refreshing sea views for me would be a Godsend.

Thank you for your kind words, I'm delighted that you were pleased with your mum's care and obviously, being a medical person yourself, you understand what goes into running a nursing home. Regarding your point on activities, I cannot disagree and we have often discussed that more could be and will be done and plans are in progress. Your mum was asked on a few sunny occasions if she wanted to join people sitting outside chatting in the garden, also asked to participate in a karaoke session but she was happier sitting in the seaview lounge with other residents and enjoying the hustle and bustle of life on the ground floor. On one occasion she was persuaded to join a conga line down the corridor with members of staff and this made her laugh greatly which was a pleasure to see. A lot of things happen on a one-to-one basis in people's rooms but activities is indeed something we are looking to improve and hope to offer more variety in the future.

My mum has never had to go into respite care at all and was very reluctant to go to Eschol House. She has now completely changed her attitude towards Eschol. According to her, the staff were all amazing, the meals were delicious, especially the puddings and she now has no worries about going to Eschol
house again if needed.

My sister was transferred to Eshcol in June 2023 from hospital. She was sent to another hospital in February, from there to another hospital and from there back to the previous and from there to another hospital. By now she was quite ill and needed respite care. On transfer to Eshcol, there was a transformation.
She had a comfortable room and a view of the garden. Quite quickly she recovered her personality and interest in life because of the attention she was given. The food was good and there was an excellent choice each day. Although she was not able to leave her room very often she didn’t feel lonely because of the care from the staff. Everyone was so very friendly and attentive. I could not fault them. They supported me through many weeks of visiting and nothing was too much trouble. When she died 2 weeks ago, the dignity and respect given to her and to me were quite overwhelming. Eshcol’s greatest asset is the staff because of their kindness and care.

How wonderfully ‘eye-opening’ it has been to witness first-hand at Eschol House, the passion, dedication and professional personalised care and attention all of the staff apply to each and every resident.
It is a huge comfort to be able to walk away after visiting a very special man in our lives, who
can no longer look after himself, and just know that he is in a peaceful and beautiful place, where understanding his individual needs and appreciating who he is as a person is central to the total care he receives. Thank you to you all at Eschol House.

After visiting several care homes in Cornwall and further afield, it was heartwarming to discuss the care my husband would need with the staff at Eshcol House, who truly understood his individual needs.
During this initial visit to discuss his needs, the Clinical Assessor and colleagues showed enormous
empathy, compassion and professionalism.
Now settled in the home, the transition from a long hospital stay to this friendly home, has been one of calm and peacefulness for my husband.

Although Dad wasn’t a resident for very long, I found all staff members treated him like someone they had known for years. The level of care was exceptional. We (the family) were all well looked after too, with meals and tea prepared and brought to us and friendly and approachable staff always available
to answer any questions. The setting of Eshcol House is perfect for providing a calming feeling as well. When it’s getting a bit much, being able to walk down to the beach or stroll through the village really helped keep us all together. I can’t praise the staff highly enough for helping make Dad's last days as comfortable and dignified as possible.

The staff at Eshcol House were caring, thoughtful and looked after the resident and the people who were visiting. It’s a lovely location and when visiting you can take a break and enjoy the beach or go on walks and enjoy the view. Sadly, our loved one was not able to enjoy this, as he was so unwell.
It did mean we could all visit during his last few days and stay as long we wanted and the staff were always there to answer any questions or help. I would fully recommend this care home with no hesitation. Thank you for your great care of all of us.

I’ve always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. My friend, who lives in the home, says that if you need support in later life, that this home is very good. Although he doesn’t want all the food or activities that they provide, what they offer is very good.
I have marked the rooms as well as
safety and security down one star, as obviously the home isn’t purpose built. The room layout and height of windows could be improved upon, so residents have a more interesting view. Better electrical things would be useful, so residents can reach things such as a bedside light or mobile phone. It is difficult when people are bedbound, they need things at hand to be in control.
If bedbound and on the upper floor, I’m unsure how residents would get out in an emergency, for example a fire. Building work is being completed at present and, as far as I am aware, this is providing a route to the outside from the top floor. Regular smoke detector and fire alarm tests are completed, so this calms my mind presently.

Thank you! This is July’s star review as it gives us an opportunity to look at our service from a different perspective. Changing the heights of the windows in some rooms has been explored. It is far more complicated than we thought! We do have challenges with increased personal devices, we’ll look into this.
Eshcol House has seven layers of fire safety: prevention, detection, early suppression, evacuation, compartmentation, structural safety and fire fighting. We have our own Consultant Fire Safety Officer and we also have external fire safety audits annually. Cornwall Fire Brigade have up to date blue prints of Eshcol House in case of emergency. A Cornwall Council Fire Safety Officer audited us in May of this year and said we were compliant. Every resident has a 'personal emergency evacuation plan'. Every floor has multiple fire exits. We have very specific strategies, which I would be very happy to discuss with you.

When my grandmother was no longer able to be looked after in her home, the decision was made to move her into a nursing home and, wow, I'm so glad this is the home that was chosen! All the concerns I had with leaving her in someone else's care were diminished straight away with the warmest of welcomes.
The staff are so genuine and caring and, from observations made around the home, they truly do treat the residents as one big family. Everyone is always smiling, even if under pressure, it would never be shown. The dedication of the team, to make sure the residents are settled, happy and overall have all their needs met, is outstanding. The home is also spotless and the food offered is of a very high standard. My nan has settled extremely well and that's all thanks to the amazing staff. After my weekly visits, I always come away knowing she is in safe hands.

My brother-in-law has been a resident at Eschol House for nine years. As someone who has lost the ability to care for himself and who is totally dependent on others, it is good to know that he is truly cared for by people who are interested in providing him with such a high level of care. I know that
during his stay, my brother-in-law has received excellent one to one care, interaction and entertainment from all the staff. I am only able to visit a few times a year, but when I do the Eschol staff are always courteous, kind and friendly to me. As someone who has worked in a residential care home (and has been a chaplain to one), I know how important it is to include everyone in the care given; residents, family and friends alike. Eschol House does this at an exemplary level. Thank you.

We found Eshcol House warm, welcoming and well-run. It has a lovely 'fresh' feel and smells of good food too! Everyone was so helpful and genuinely dedicated to their guests. They spent many hours with me, explaining how everything works there and reassuring me. Also, ringing and checking how Dad was
doing, even after he left the home.

Mum was moved to the home back in March after not managing at home, as she needs twenty-four hour care. We’ve seen a huge improvement in her health since being here. Each time we’ve visited, we’ve been made to feel welcome and were even given lunch the other day. Our three children are always given
crisps, chocolate and a can of drink and are allowed to play out on the balcony, where they wave and speak to the lovely gentleman in the next room to Mum. Every single staff member we have met have been wonderful and friendly. We would recommend this home to anyone who is looking for a care home that has that 'home from home' feel.

From the initial contact with staff members during the placement enquiry stage, assessment visits at the hospital, to the end of her journey, the care she received was respectful and nurturing at a very frightening time in her life with an unexpected illness. Staff ensured her care was adjusted to her
needs as her health deteriorated, even down to her dietary needs. Meals and snacks were made for her personal taste.
Home visits were facilitated whilst she was also staying at Eshcol House and transport was all organised by them to ensure she could still have a little time with family at her home. The bedroom she occupied had a wonderful sea view, which the home also encouraged to personalise with her own belongings, and was enjoyed in her last days.

Everyone should have a friend like you in their life as I remember your initial phone call which enabled us to pencil in a bed reservation at a very busy time for us. That meant that your friend was able to be admitted seamlessly following a quick assessment. As you know, we all became very fond of your friend; what a lady she was and her absence must have left a huge hole in all your lives.
