Eshcol House Nursing Home is a wonderful place to live, located in one of the most beautiful parts of the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The property is situated a very short distance from the beach, and the views from many of the rooms are truly exceptional, from the Portscatho beaches 'Tatums' and 'The Porth' across Gerrans Bay with the famous Gull Rock, Nare Head and Dodman Point in full view. The gardens are pretty with numerous places and opportunities to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views.

The team are very pleased to have counted many former locals from the village amongst their residents and they feel a special bond with the community.

The very friendly and proficient management team and all the lovely staff have a wide range of expertise and knowledge, and everyone really enjoys working together to make every day special for the lovely residents.

Whilst being a homely environment, Eshcol House is well stocked with any necessary equipment to help residents who need more help to make the most of their day. There are dedicated activities staff to ensure everyone has a variety of things to do, to encourage the lovely communal feel the home has developed over the years.

The local GP surgery is around a very short corner and the home has a named doctor who is their contact. On admission your relative will be transferred to this practice and will meet the doctor at the earliest opportunity for a review.

Get in touch with the team to arrange to meet them and see what they're like.

The transformation in my friend was astonishing. She was unwell before visiting and very unsure and resistant to the idea of even going into a care home. When I invited her two days later, she was relaxed, happy and had regained her zest for life, and was very glad to be in Eshcol. She felt looked after,
enjoyed the company of the staff and wants to move in! She loved her room and being able to see the sea and being able to easily access the garden - her favourite place to be!
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThat is such a lovely review, and the fact that your friend is now coming to Eshcol House as a permanent resident speaks volumes about how easy and comfortable she found her short respite break. It was a pleasure to read your kind words, and we look forward to welcoming you as one of our regular visitors. I foresee many happy summer afternoons for you both in her beautifully situated room.

Friendly, caring staff in an attractive sea-view location in this pretty old fishing village. As a visitor made very welcome. Excellent pub close by for meals with indoor and outdoor seating. This review will not be accepted unless I submit at least 200 characters, so this paragraph will hopefully
fill this objective!
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeYour review made me smile, and I think you could have a future writing snapshot guidebook entries. Seriously, though, thank you for taking the time to let us know your impressions of Eshcol House and the beautiful area in which we are based. I hope you come back soon to visit your friend, as you both certainly brightened his day.

I experienced great kindness, consideration and warmth while I was staying at Eshcol. The staff did all they could to meet my needs and made me feel very welcome. The room I stayed in was just right, sea view, access to the garden and fresh air.

The staff were very caring and helped my mother-in-law to make her stay as comfortable as possible. They even let us visit with her cat, which was a great comfort. The lady on reception was great and regularly suggested things that could be done to help my mother-in-law while keeping us informed of
any changes during her stay. We were always welcome to visit at any time and were very confident that she was being looked after and in safe, caring hands.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for your kind words. It's always a pleasure (if loved ones going into a care home can ever truly be called a pleasure) when a local family member is here. I am delighted that your experience of Eshcol House was such a positive one. Best wishes to you and all the family.

I spent half an hour with my relative. Two staff left as I arrived having given her some care. Snacks and drinks were available by her bed if required. The atmosphere is bright and happy. All the staff are cheerful and polite. Residents were either visiting in their rooms with door ajar or in the lounge
chatting. We recalled that my mother spend 18 happy months there at the end of her life.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for such a kind review. The Eshcol team work tirelessly in all that they do and a review like yours really does make us feel like we are getting things right.

When I arrived at Eschol House I had a lovely greeting from the staff which put me at ease straight away, as I was very frightened and bewildered and from that day every member of staff has been absolutely brilliant and fantastic to me they cannot do enough to help me nothing is to much trouble they
go above and beyond and my health is improving and it's all down to the care, help and support I'm getting from these wonderful people. I also have a lovely room with everything I need in it and feel very happy here.

My mother spent the last seven weeks of her life at Eshcol House - first on respite care, then as a permanent resident. Aged 96, her health was failing when she arrived at Eschol House but the level of care she received was excellent. The staff really care about the residents and could not have been
kinder to my mother.
I am sad that my mother was not able to be at Eshcol House in better health or for longer but I recommend this nursing home to others.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for taking the time to leave this very kind review. In your own words - The staff really care about the residents -yes, we do. If you have this then everything else falls into place. However, we are always striving to improve. There are some building improvements planned in the near future but caring is always our number one priority. Your mother was a class act and it was a pleasure to have known her.

From the time my friend first came to Eshcol House the overall care has been excellent. All staff I have come into contact with have been both professional and friendly. Never an easy visit, but Eshcol staff make it as positive as possible.
I always leave feeling assured friend is well cared for.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for your very kind and thoughtful review. We do understand how hard it can be to see the change in people that have a place in our heart. We are all very fond of your friend, she spends a lot of time in our lounge as she likes to have people around and we all have all developed a real friendship with her. It is very easy to have genuine fondness for her, she's lovely.

My mum has settled in really well at Eshcol House Nursing Home. She particularly likes how friendly the staff are and she has already made a friend with one of the other residents. She has been enjoying jigsaws and scrabble.
She also appreciates having a balcony with the amazing view of Gerrans Bay
which she can enjoy on fine days.

My partner was transferred from a hospice almost 3 months ago and at that time he was very poorly, confused and immobile. The change in him since he has been receiving the amazing standards of care, and nursing professionalism, delivered to all of the Eshcol team is nothing short of miraculous. Alternative
pain medication was introduced which meant he regained his personality and humour, he regained a degree of mobility which nobody believed would be possible, and for him, me our family and friends, quality time and quality of life have returned. Every member of staff from senior management, nurses, H.C.A's, chefs, housekeeping and maintenance, are kind, helpful, knowledgeable, friendly and keep smiling whatever the task or challenges; (including sorting out hospital appointments and transport which is not always straightforward!) I enjoy visiting the home, and home is the right description because it feels like a family environment where I am always made welcome, and given immense help and support in navigating the care system.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for your amazing review which I have read out to the team on shift today. Your kind and thoughtful words have moved us considerably and it helped remind us all why we do what we do. We don't have the fancy trimmings of a lot of the bigger corporate homes, we are a family-run independent but what we offer is a team of people working to the highest possible standard and this is borne out by your experience. Thank you again for putting it into such good words.

This home has a wonderful view of the sea which is enjoyed from the road-side sitting room and some of the bedrooms. Lovely plants by the building too. Not all bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms, but if not the nearest bathroom is easily accessible, and a wash basin in the bedroom. All the staff I have
met are charming, attentive, caring, gentle and kind. Not much care parking for visitors at the front of the house.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you for your review and for your comments. The car park is something we are continually monitoring. Unfortunately, we do have a lot of elderly visitors and sometimes parking can be a trifle erratic. There is parking for 16 cars but that does depend on the layout on the day. I hope that on the day you visited it did not prove too problematic.

Mum arrived at Eshcol on her 94th birthday. She was met with a cake and the staff singing 'Happy Birthday.' Mum had settled in exceptionally well and this, I think, is due to the kindness of the staff. There is always someone around, the staff know Mum and when asked, update me immediately with how
she is getting on. She is well looked after and always looks clean and tidy and even more importantly happy.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for taking the time and trouble to leave this kind review. It was lovely to see the smile on your mum's face when she stood in our doorway, saw the cake and heard our warbling as she arrived. It must be quite overwhelming to be coming into a new place to live and I'd like to think that this greeting might have helped show her she would be amongst friends. As she is down in the lounge every day and I sit in full view of the lounge we've interacted quite a lot and she does seem to have settled in remarkably well.

My dad moved into Eschol several months ago and from the start, the staff have welcomed and cared for him extremely well. Friendly and professional they have helped him to mobilise with good humour and dignity towards his needs. It was a tricky move for dad to leave his own home but the support we have
all received from the wonderful people at Eschol House has been excellent. It is good to know he is safe and looked after and always a pleasure to visit the home. Dad has a lovely sea view from his room and there are some lovely nearby places to take him out to.

My dad has been at Eschol for 9 months. We cannot praise them enough. He has been so happy and tended the staff are amazing. They have spent so much time with him and showed nothing but respect and dignity. He built up a lot of trust with them which for my dad is not easy. The food is fantastic, friendly
chefs with varied options. I cannot praise you all enough and would recommend it to anyone. Thank you.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.771)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.771) out of 10 for Eshcol House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 46 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 46 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.771 for Eshcol House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (419 Excellents x 5) + (98 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 528 Ratings = 4.771
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Eshcol House Nursing Home is based on 46 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 31 registered maximum number of service users is 6.2, which has been reached with 46 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
