Eshcol House Nursing Home is a wonderful place to live, located in one of the most beautiful parts of the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The property is situated a very short distance from the beach, and the views from many of the rooms are truly exceptional, from the Portscatho beaches 'Tatums' and 'The Porth' across Gerrans Bay with the famous Gull Rock, Nare Head and Dodman Point in full view. The gardens are pretty with numerous places and opportunities to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views.

The team are very pleased to have counted many former locals from the village amongst their residents and they feel a special bond with the community.

The very friendly and proficient management team and all the lovely staff have a wide range of expertise and knowledge, and everyone really enjoys working together to make every day special for the lovely residents.

Whilst being a homely environment, Eshcol House is well stocked with any necessary equipment to help residents who need more help to make the most of their day. There are dedicated activities staff to ensure everyone has a variety of things to do, to encourage the lovely communal feel the home has developed over the years.

The local GP surgery is around a very short corner and the home has a named doctor who is their contact. On admission your relative will be transferred to this practice and will meet the doctor at the earliest opportunity for a review.

Get in touch with the team to arrange to meet them and see what they're like.

My mum has settled in really well at Eshcol House Nursing Home. She particularly likes how friendly the staff are and she has already made a friend with one of the other residents. She has been enjoying jigsaws and scrabble.
She also appreciates having a balcony with the amazing view of Gerrans Bay
which she can enjoy on fine days.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for your very kind words. It's been great how easily your mum has slotted into life here. It's like she has been here for ages and her friendship with the other resident has been heartwarming.

My partner was transferred from a hospice almost 3 months ago and at that time he was very poorly, confused and immobile. The change in him since he has been receiving the amazing standards of care, and nursing professionalism, delivered to all of the Eshcol team is nothing short of miraculous. Alternative
pain medication was introduced which meant he regained his personality and humour, he regained a degree of mobility which nobody believed would be possible, and for him, me our family and friends, quality time and quality of life have returned. Every member of staff from senior management, nurses, H.C.A's, chefs, housekeeping and maintenance, are kind, helpful, knowledgeable, friendly and keep smiling whatever the task or challenges; (including sorting out hospital appointments and transport which is not always straightforward!) I enjoy visiting the home, and home is the right description because it feels like a family environment where I am always made welcome, and given immense help and support in navigating the care system.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for your amazing review which I have read out to the team on shift today. Your kind and thoughtful words have moved us considerably and it helped remind us all why we do what we do. We don't have the fancy trimmings of a lot of the bigger corporate homes, we are a family-run independent but what we offer is a team of people working to the highest possible standard and this is borne out by your experience. Thank you again for putting it into such good words.

This home has a wonderful view of the sea which is enjoyed from the road-side sitting room and some of the bedrooms. Lovely plants by the building too. Not all bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms, but if not the nearest bathroom is easily accessible, and a wash basin in the bedroom. All the staff I have
met are charming, attentive, caring, gentle and kind. Not much care parking for visitors at the front of the house.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you for your review and for your comments. The car park is something we are continually monitoring. Unfortunately, we do have a lot of elderly visitors and sometimes parking can be a trifle erratic. There is parking for 16 cars but that does depend on the layout on the day. I hope that on the day you visited it did not prove too problematic.

Mum arrived at Eshcol on her 94th birthday. She was met with a cake and the staff singing 'Happy Birthday.' Mum had settled in exceptionally well and this, I think, is due to the kindness of the staff. There is always someone around, the staff know Mum and when asked, update me immediately with how
she is getting on. She is well looked after and always looks clean and tidy and even more importantly happy.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for taking the time and trouble to leave this kind review. It was lovely to see the smile on your mum's face when she stood in our doorway, saw the cake and heard our warbling as she arrived. It must be quite overwhelming to be coming into a new place to live and I'd like to think that this greeting might have helped show her she would be amongst friends. As she is down in the lounge every day and I sit in full view of the lounge we've interacted quite a lot and she does seem to have settled in remarkably well.

My dad moved into Eschol several months ago and from the start, the staff have welcomed and cared for him extremely well. Friendly and professional they have helped him to mobilise with good humour and dignity towards his needs. It was a tricky move for dad to leave his own home but the support we have
all received from the wonderful people at Eschol House has been excellent. It is good to know he is safe and looked after and always a pleasure to visit the home. Dad has a lovely sea view from his room and there are some lovely nearby places to take him out to.

My dad has been at Eschol for 9 months. We cannot praise them enough. He has been so happy and tended the staff are amazing. They have spent so much time with him and showed nothing but respect and dignity. He built up a lot of trust with them which for my dad is not easy. The food is fantastic, friendly
chefs with varied options. I cannot praise you all enough and would recommend it to anyone. Thank you.

The carers and staff are very friendly, helpful and professional. The room is ideal for Mum, with wonderful sea views. There are plenty of activities and a lovely garden. We are very pleased with Mum's care.

I have rung Eshcol House on 2 or 3 occasions before we came down on Monday and the staff have been so lovely and helpful. They obviously really care about our relative and know when she is feeling up to speaking, so when we came down on Monday it was obviously not a good time. She was tired and had
already had a visitor. We came again on Tuesday to give some family photos and a letter and the carer suggested we look in to see if she was up to seeing us. She was, and seemed really pleased to see us so I can't thank the staff enough. They had even researched her relative's husband who she misses, so they could talk to her about him. Wonderful people and place.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for your very kind words. It was so lovely to meet you on that Tuesday morning and I'm glad that the visit went ahead so well. When your relative first mentioned her husband to me when I met her in the hospital he sounded so fascinating that I was sure there would be info online about him. Once your relative became a resident I asked her permission to research further and print it out and I'm pleased that what she read made her so happy. We do hope to welcome you back one day.

The first thing that strikes you when walking into Eschol Nursing Home is what a lovely atmosphere there is. The staff are, without exception friendly and cheerful. The residents are well cared for, and there appears always to be plenty of staff around and busy. There is a pleasant lounge where residents
are encouraged to partake in the plentiful activities that are on offer. Also available are activities for room-bound residents. The food is fantastic and well presented; great choices, and as many ingredients as possible locally sourced. The home is very clean and tidy too. To summarise I would like to say how happy I am to have my father staying here. When you see the whole package in operation it makes you realise that it is very good value for money. He is continually well cared for with kindness, respect and dignity. It is a joy to visit him in Eshcol, where visitors as well as residents are made to feel exceptionally welcome.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for this glowing review. I just read it out to the team and it acted like a tonic. The team here are always trying their best to do their best and sometimes words like this just give us that boost. Very friendly staff. My mother-in-law was welcomed in after a fall at home. Her care was fantastic - regular Doctor visits during her recovery. Detailed updates to the family. Above all a real sense that she was welcome and her care (mental and physical) was paramount. She has a beautiful view from
her room and frequent visits from staff and family. At present she is bedbound. She always seems cheerful and has no end of praise for the staff.

My mum has been living at Eshcol House for several months, and she seems happy and comfortable there. The building is a little shabby, but apart from that it's a very good care home. The important things are there - the people are kind and take time to chat with everyone. The balance between encouraging
social engagement and letting people be seems about right. The only criticism I would make is that the service alarm often seems to be on for some time. Overall it has a very good feel to the place. My mum grew up in Cornwall, so having a view of the sea means a lot to her.
Reply from Amanda Clarke, Registered Manager at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for taking the time to submit a review. The period from May '24 is the third period of respite care I have taken with Eshcol and I always look forward to my return here. It's like a holiday to me. I live about 500 miles from Eshcol. My sister-in-law was transferred with her consent from a very good retirement home complex under difficult personal circumstances. The staff have always been very helpful and when we have phoned offered to take the phone to her. They kept us informed as to her condition
and on one occasion they phoned us during the night to advise of her problem, with a follow-up the next morning. They made her very comfortable in her final days.
Reply from Julie Kahn, Clinical Assessor at Eshcol House Nursing HomeThank you so much for your review. What a shame you were unable to travel here to see for yourself the quality of her sea view room, taste the delicious food our catering staff prepare (when people come from a distance we offer them lunch) and see the high standards our housekeeping team follow in keeping up the cleanliness of the home. However, I am pleased that you feel she settled with us despite the difficult circumstances of her admission and that we were able to offer her comfort in her final days.

What an amazing care home, everyone is so kind and considerate. Dad has been with the team here for nearly a year and has settled in so well. Care is first class, food is of a high standard and Dad is delighted when I bring the family dog in for a visit also.

recommend it to anyone looking for a safe, happy, and settling environment for themselves or a family member.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.759)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.759) out of 10 for Eshcol House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 42 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 42 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.759 for Eshcol House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (377 Excellents x 5) + (95 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 482 Ratings = 4.759
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Eshcol House Nursing Home is based on 42 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 31 registered maximum number of service users is 6.2, which has been reached with 42 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
