We visit every evening and staff are always polite and friendly and if you have a problem you will always find someone to talk to. Our relative always gets good care and staff are polite, although sometimes there's a language barrier, but this is to be expected. We would recommend Vale View Heights
and over the latter months it has improved. Overall, happy with management, staff and home.

The registered manager and her new team have truly excelled and turned Vale View Heights around! When my aunt arrived, the lack of communication was awful and we had concerns over staff and the care provided, this was a year ago onwards. Since the registered manager's arrival, things have really turned
around, she communicates well and sorts out quickly any concerns. The activity team, nursing staff and kitchen all seem most efficient and friendly too. Thank you very much.

The management and activities staff are excellent. The caring staff treat my husband with care, consideration and dignity at all times. Sometimes there are not enough staff to answer the call bells immediately. There are some very challenging residents who are treated with patience and understanding.
The actual property is a little tired but improvements in the building and decor are being made to enhance the ambience. Food is consistently good and well presented.

My wife has been in this home for about nine months. Beautiful environment, lovely gardens and really nice views. Never met the previous manager, but the new manager has their 'finger on the pulse', meeting residents and being really involved in moving the home forward. Really nice staff, carers and
nurses. Haven't come across another nursing home as good as this one.

Mum seems to be happy with every member of staff that enters the room, does not shy away, a very important issue for her and my state of mind when a relation enters a home.
If I have ever had to ask about her welfare/illness, she has been dealt with immediately and everything explained to me.
I think
TV, as Mum is bedridden, could be on as she is deaf and moving pictures are at least something to see and I think she could be encouraged to drink more.

All of the care staff are extremely professional and hard working. They combine professionalism with kindness, friendliness and cheerfulness. Nothing is too much bother for them. My room was extremely comfortable with an en-suite and balcony, benefitting from spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.
The food menu offered a good variety of nutritious meals with generous portions and there was always fresh fruit available for dessert. The room was kept thoroughly clean and my clothes and bedding were laundered daily. Nursing staff were extremely efficient and dispensed my medication at the right time.

I was very pleased with the care my uncle received at this care home. The staff were caring and friendly and I like to think they became part of his extended family. I was kept informed of all aspects of his care. Thank you.

My mother has been at this care home for 2 and a half years. She has found all the staff and carers helpful and very caring. The home seems able to keep the same carers which helps to make it feel more like home and a caring atmosphere. She has a lovely room overlooking the garden but they can't all
have such good outlooks. Was able to bring her own pieces of furniture and her own pictures were put up very quickly which helped her to settle in. Her birthday was remembered and celebrated well by the staff.
Reply from Joanne Burchell, Home Manager at Vale View Heights Care HomeA big thank you for your review we are very fortunate to have a great team of staff. This care home is the most wonderful Sidmouth treasure. I have never met such truly caring, happy staff. It has a ripple effect. They are incredible - nothing is too much trouble to keep my sister well, smiling and contented. Believe me, this takes some doing sometimes. I can't tell you how much we
(my husband and I) value the visitor's room. Just to be able to see and hear my sister does us all the power of good. Knowing we can share these incredibly important times and laugh with each other, definitely brightens everyone's day. It's amazing and proves that it can be done in these desolate times, to keep residents, staff and relatives safe from Coronavirus. Just huge, heartfelt thanks to you all. You are truly an inspiration and an example of excellence.

My aunt celebrated her 80th birthday in August and we were able to watch her being helped to open cards and presents through the glass screen of the visitors' room. Bearing in mind visits are 45 minutes, staff had taken the trouble to decorate the room on her side with a birthday banner, balloons and
flowers. Then a cake was brought in with 80 on it and staff sang with us on their side of the glass. It was lovely and much appreciated. (Unfortunately, we weren't allowed any of the cake). When the time was up there was no rushing. We kept to time but without feeling pressured. The genuine care and interest in the resident were very apparent. Thank you all.
Reply from Joanne Burchell, Home Manager at Vale View Heights Care HomeThank you for your lovely review it is greatly appreciated. I am really pleased to hear that your Aunt had a lovely birthday. My sister has been a resident of this care home for the past 5 years. She is 88 years old and suffers from Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. Very fortunately in September 2019, the ownership changed hands (in the previous 12 months the quality of care had seriously deteriorated) but in the
past 12 months, the standard and level of care have improved greatly. Communication with relatives is excellent....this has been most important during the Covid crisis. There appears to be more accountability, teamwork, training and supervision of staff with much attention being paid to ensuring residents are seen as individuals and just not just another number. Enquiries are dealt with in a warm and professional manner and although currently, visiting is restricted, the new refurbished 'protected' visitors room provides a practical, safe and friendly environment for relatives to meet their loved ones. I would now be very pleased to recommend this care home to friends. A very caring community.
Reply from Joanne Burchell, Home Manager at Vale View Heights Care HomeThank you so much for your wonderful review - the team have all been working hard. With the support of Welford Healthcare we have been able to achieve these great improvements.
Our aim is to provide a lovely homely atmosphere with individual person centred care.
We are delighted and feel blessed that we have our dedicated visitors rooms - once again that was with the support of our Directors at Welford Healthcare as we understand the importance of our residents still being able to see there families and friends during these difficult times.
I will share your lovely comments with my team - thank you once again.

My experience of this care home has been excellent. The staff and management seem to care for the residents and work hard to make the home, well.... a home. There have been issues with the standard of food which was raised in a family and residents meeting (before lockdown) and a new chef was recruited.
They were ahead of the government on the pandemic so although this meant we weren't able to visit for months, they then installed a visitor room with a glass wall and speakers so you can visit in safety.
Reply from Joanne Burchell, Home Manager at Vale View Heights Care HomeThank you, Nick, for your very positive feedback, we feel that it is important to always remember that this is our residents home and we work hard to provide a homely atmosphere.
We are blessed with our visitor's room as this has made it possible for our residents and their families to keep in close contact on a weekly basis. - so thank you once again for your very kind words I will post your review on the staff notice board.

This care home is a very well run home with caring staff, including nursing staff, many of whom have worked at the home for many years and know the residents intimately, making appropriate adjustments to suit the individual and manage the few dementia sufferers with tact, dignity, and respect. It is
a happy home and Mum has been a contented resident for 6 years. Facilities for residents are good and attention is paid to safety and to hygiene and is COVID-safe. Catering is excellent and residents have a choice of menu and cognisance is taken of dietary requirements ie. diabetes. Early, pre-emptive, action to close the home to visitors has protected lives and staff from COVID. The home offers a range of activities for residents and trips out - though these have had to be curtailed this year. Each room has a TV and in Mum's case, I have had a satellite box fitted so that she can view Polish TV. I have no hesitation in recommending the care home to families considering placing a relative in care.

I can, of course, only comment from my personal knowledge of my mother's experience since she moved to the care home 3 years ago. To that extent, I have been entirely satisfied with all aspects of her time in their care.
She was, understandably, reluctant to leave her home and found some aspects of
the inevitable change of life pattern and loss of independence difficult to adjust to - neither of which should reflect as a criticism of the level of commitment of care and concern she has received throughout her time as a resident.
I have no doubt that she has come to understand and appreciate this as time as moved on; indeed, she has better understood this as her general medical state of wellbeing has deteriorated.
Reply from Joanne Burchell, Home Manager at Vale View Heights Care HomeI am very pleased to hear that you are satisfied with all aspects of your Mothers care it is always great to receive positive feedback and I will share this with my team.
The transition into a care home is never easy but our main aim is to offer support both to our residents and relatives and this should continue as we are here on a daily basis to offer support and reassurance - Many thanks for your kind words.

My mum came here from hospital with sepsis; she now can’t walk and has to get the carers to do everything for her. As you can imagine, she found this very hard. All the staff at the nursing home are fantastic; nothing is too much trouble. They are very kind to us as well. The food is also very good
- a choice with every meal.

The food is always the same, not a lot of vegetables for me to have with veg and salad. The staff are very obliging, and manners help a lot and to be smiling, but I know it is hard when working in the day and night. More lasagne, lovely chicken, pork curries and cottage pie, please. Like Chinese food
but could be better.

I am very happy with the care home.
My only issue with it would be the impression that they are always short of staff and the cleanliness of her room could be better.
My mother is very happy which is the only thing that really matters.
Reply from Chaslyn Bryant, Manager at Vale View Heights Care HomeThank you for your comments, we are really pleased that you and your mother are happy with our home. We are always looking at ways to improve our services and we appreciate your feedback. Regarding your point about cleanliness, I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this with you, because we do like to pride ourselves on a clean and odorous free home and I would really like to make sure your mothers room is as it should be. Regarding the matter of your impression about is being short-staffed, I would like to reassure you that we always staff our floors safely so we can meet the needs of our resident's. If anyone calls in sick we do our utmost to bring in additional team member's.

My husband went into the care home in very poor health and needing help on many fronts. He is now much happier due to the attention of staff and the routines. The dedicated carers stimulate my husband chatting to him and engaging him in activities. The care home has had a change of ownership and is
suffering from a change of familiar care staff. This has been unsettling for all concerned. The gardens at the care home are beautiful and well maintained, the house is spacious, however, it is looking tired. In my husband's room, the toilet doesn't flush easily, toilet toll holder is hanging off, tap rotates and wall light doesn't work. The resident's toilet downstairs is not very pleasant and needs upgrading. Core care staff have been approachable and lovely.
Reply from Chaslyn Bryant, Manager at Vale View Heights Care HomeThank you for your comments, we are really pleased that you and your mother are happy with our home. Whilst the home has changed ownership, I would like to reassure you that it is very much business as usual within the home. The home management remains the same, with the owners being extremely supportive. There are some exciting refurbishment plans ahead that will begin in the not too distant future.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.561)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.561) out of 10 for Vale View Heights Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.661 for Vale View Heights Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (128 Excellents x 5) + (48 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 183 Ratings = 4.661
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Vale View Heights Care Home is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 55 registered maximum number of service users is 11, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
