Marian House is an exceptional care home for older people located in Sutton Coldfield. The nursing home has been awarded a ‘good’ rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) report in April 2023. With the most recent refurbishment completed in 2022, the nursing home is spacious, modern and beautifully presented.

Marian House offers a comprehensive range of 24-hour nursing care services for the elderly. Residents enjoy an exceptional lifestyle with access to various amenities both inside the nursing home and out in the local community. The dedicated activities team regularly organise group and one-to-one activities tailored to the needs of the residents.

There is always something happening at Marian House. Some residents enjoy being kept busy with light activities and friendly conversations with professional care staff, while others seek longer moments of peace and quiet. As such, they appreciate the day-to-day life of all residents will differ. The team work around residents' needs and preferences, while ensuring their health (physical and emotional) stays top of mind.

Being a specialist nursing care provider the home is equipped with lifts aids and hoists for residents with specialised mobility needs. All the nursing beds have recently been replaced with new, modern adjustable models - without looking “clinical”. There are two good-sized lounges for residents and visitors to relax and socialise with each other. In the warmer weather the residents have full use of another lounge which extends into the dining room and overlooks the leafy garden.

The home also boasts a hydrotherapy unit which has been recently installed into the building.

There is Wifi available throughout the home allowing regular FaceTime calls to be made for residents who wish to connect with their loved ones (the professional carers will even show you how it’s done).

I feel the care given to my mother by all staff has been exemplary. The positive attitude of all staff has certainly helped my mother settle in quickly. The food served is excellent, the frequent activities on offer are well organised. I would recommend this home to others.
Reply from Alix Barr, Administrator at Marian House Nursing HomeThank you so much for your kind comments and leaving Marian House a five-star review, we're very grateful. My 92-year-old mother moved into Marian House at the beginning of November 2023 following the death of her husband and a subsequent stroke and heart attack. She has a lovely, bright, airy room and is very well cared for by the wonderful staff. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, and she has settled
in very well after living independently and caring for my father for many years. It was a great shock to us, but we are glad that she is safe and happy. I would highly recommend Marian House based on our experience.
Reply from Alix Barr, Administrator at Marian House Nursing HomeThank you for such a positive review; we take great pride in our home and the care that we offer to our residents. It has been wonderful to see your mother settle into life here and also to welcome your family into the home. Thank you for your support and for taking the time to recognise our efforts in all areas, especially in maintaining the safety and happiness of our residents. I will pass your comments on to all the team.

My brother has been a resident for over four years, having been discharged from the hospital into care at the start of the Covid 19 pandemic. He had a complex, self-neglecting medical history and could be very difficult to manage. The staff were extremely patient and adapted their care and routines
to my brother's needs. It took a long time, but my brother is now well-settled and very well cared for. His medical conditions are stable, and he enjoys banter with his carers. It is such a relief to know he is safe and well cared for. The home has a happy atmosphere, and all the staff, from management to carers, back office, cleaners and caterers are extremely helpful. Thank you to all.
Reply from Alix Barr, Administrator at Marian House Nursing HomeThank you very much for taking the time to leave such a positive, in-depth review. It is great that your brother is well-settled here; providing outstanding care is always our aim, and we take great pride in this. It is a pleasure to welcome families into the home, and we hope that all families feel as welcome as the residents do. Once again, thank you for all your kind words; they really are greatly appreciated. I will pass on the kind words to all the staff here.

The staff are very friendly and caring. Can't do enough for you. Treat the residents like family and have helped settle Mom into the routine. They find time to spend with Mom if she is upset or has difficulty eating. The food looks really nice. We are really glad we chose Marian House to look after
Mom.

My mother is here for end-of-life care. Everything about this care home is exceptional. All the staff are so kind, professional and polite. The home itself is very well maintained with nice decor. The interior was recently painted. My mother's room is clean and tidy with everything she needs. We were
told to make the room as personal as we wished which was nice. A highly recommended care home.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. Mum is looked after, and they cannot do enough to make sure she is well-kempt, fed and kept comfortable. They treat Mum with respect, and even with her dementia, they have time to talk to her. They include her in activities and try
to encourage her to take part. The home is kept clean and tidy, and it is a pleasure to go into. I have the greatest respect for the carers for their patience and understanding. I’m so pleased Mum ended up there. I have no doubt she is in a wonderful home with lovely, caring people.

Dad has been a resident at Marian House Nursing Home for 18 months now, and we are really happy that he is well looked after, safe and cared for by the team. His room is always nice and clean whenever we visit, and we can sit in privacy there to spend some quality time with him. Dad has settled in here
lovely now, and he has a lot of friends with the staff. The back office team have always been incredibly helpful and supportive from day one, which goes a long way. Compared to two previous care homes Dad was in, this is so much better as he wasn’t looked after properly, and we get a lot of comfort in knowing Dad is safe here in these difficult circumstances. Well done, and thanks to all the team.

I am very happy with the quality of care given to my brother. Whilst he is a resident at this care home, the quality of care at this home provides excellent standards of care from management to domestic, kitchen, care, etc. This home is extremely warm and inviting from all of the staff with excellent
communication skills, ie management and staff are extremely supportive of my brother whilst he is in their care. The standards of cleanliness and excellent standards of hygiene are of high standards, providing healthy, nutritious meals are provided for all residents. I am happy that my brother is in the right place for care.

My mom has vascular dementia and is bedridden, I work full time and it gives me peace of mind to know the excellent care she is given. Mom can’t participate in activities because of the severity of her condition, but could do the music therapy in her own room, they are excellent from the managers to
the cleaning staff they always chat with me when I visit and with my mom.

My dad has been a resident for over 3 years and as a family, we couldn't be happier with the care he's received. They give him the care we are unable to do ourselves. We know he is loved and looked after by all the staff - from the office to the cleaners and everyone in between.

As a volunteer, I visit Marian House weekly to administer Holy Communion to two residents. During the visit, I usually have some brief discussions with staff and always feel welcome. I find the staff to be both friendly and accommodating. Particular mentions go to the Activities Co-Ordinator, the on-site
manager, and the lady who distributes the refreshments. Also, fellow visitor - the hairdresser.

My mom was looked after at Marion House for her final days. Mom was given 24-hour care. Special thanks to the staff.
Mom was looked after in her last days which helped us not only with the transition of having to come to terms with Mom going into a home, which she never wanted to, enabling us to feel
comfortable with this as we knew this was our only option.
Thank you all for looking after our mom.

My mom moved in under Covid restrictions, which wasn't ideal, as she was scared to make such a huge move without her family by her side.
However, the staff were incredibly kind and supportive and made her transition as easy as possible. Special thanks to staff who held her hand in the early days,
when family weren't allowed to.
Since the very first day, the staff have been amazing. They work incredibly hard, to ensure that every aspect of my mom's life runs smoothly.
The staff treat my mom more like a friend, rather than a resident, she is so happy.
This is so comforting and reassuring for her family, we need not worry about a thing, as we know that my mom is receiving the best care. As she lives in an extremely happy environment and she loves her cosy room.
The home itself is well-equipped, spotlessly clean and very welcoming.
We can't possibly put into words, the level of gratitude we feel towards the staff of Marion House.
Reply from Alix, Administrator at Marian House Nursing HomeThanks Lucy for taking the time to write this amazing review. It was our pleasure to offer that support to your Mom and the rest of your family, during the Covid restrictions and since the restrictions have lifted, it has been wonderful to welcome you all into the home.

(1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 42 registered maximum number of service users is 8.4, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2025

I have been a Registered General Nurse for over 20 years. I have a BSc Hons in Health Studies, NVQ Level 5 in Leadership and Management and Mentorship in Nursing Practice. I have also completed Lead to Succeed and Rise programme with My Home Life England. I worked in the NHS in various settings for 10 years and then started work in the Care Sector in 2012.

At Marian House, we have a wonderful team, and I am a firm believer that when you have a happy staff team, the positivity spreads to everyone.

We receive lots of positive feedback about how caring and friendly the staff are, and that the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. We focus on getting to know your loved ones to ensure we deliver person-centred care with family and friends’ involvement.

It is so lovely to hear the laughter in the corridors when staff and the people that we support are interacting with one another. There is a strong ethos here to treat people how you would like to be treated yourself, encouraging independence, individual choice and preferences.

We are always here to help with any questions or queries you may have. We look forward to welcoming you to our home

Sarah Monkman

Job Title: Lead Activities Coordinator Joined: 2021

I joined this great team in April 2021 as a care assistant, progressing to Senior Carer later that year. I took the role of Lead Activity Coordination in March 2024 after helping out with activities and finding that I loved the job and wanted to do it permanently.

Before joining Marian House, I worked as a Care Coordinator for a domiciliary care company as well as a dispenser in a pharmacy. I worked at both for several years before deciding to move over to nursing care.

I have found a passion for End-of-life care as well as Dignity in care. I have done a lot of training on these subjects which aids me in providing this care for the residents here at Marian House. I have just qualified in my NVQ Level 4 in Lead Adult Care, which I am very proud of. I love my job and thoroughly enjoy bringing joy and smiles to the resident's faces and lives, as well as coming up with new ideas and finding entertainment groups for the home.

Outside of work, my husband and I and our dog spend a lot of time outside, whether it be in the garden, gardening and looking after our pond, or going out for walks around our local Park. I enjoy playing the guitar, and my dad and I have regular jamming sessions, to our neighbour's dismay.
