Marian House is an exceptional care home for older people located in Sutton Coldfield. The nursing home has been awarded a ‘good’ rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) report in April 2023. With the most recent refurbishment completed in 2022, the nursing home is spacious, modern and beautifully presented.

Marian House offers a comprehensive range of 24-hour nursing care services for the elderly. Residents enjoy an exceptional lifestyle with access to various amenities both inside the nursing home and out in the local community. The dedicated activities team regularly organise group and one-to-one activities tailored to the needs of the residents.

There is always something happening at Marian House. Some residents enjoy being kept busy with light activities and friendly conversations with professional care staff, while others seek longer moments of peace and quiet. As such, they appreciate the day-to-day life of all residents will differ. The team work around residents' needs and preferences, while ensuring their health (physical and emotional) stays top of mind.

Being a specialist nursing care provider the home is equipped with lifts aids and hoists for residents with specialised mobility needs. All the nursing beds have recently been replaced with new, modern adjustable models - without looking “clinical”. There are two good-sized lounges for residents and visitors to relax and socialise with each other. In the warmer weather the residents have full use of another lounge which extends into the dining room and overlooks the leafy garden.

The home also boasts a hydrotherapy unit which has been recently installed into the building.

There is Wifi available throughout the home allowing regular FaceTime calls to be made for residents who wish to connect with their loved ones (the professional carers will even show you how it’s done).

The home is lovely, the room that my mum has is homely. We are allowed to put pictures on the wall and bring items that are special to my mum. We are always greeted by a friendly face and are allowed to pop in at any time.
The nurses are fully qualified and administer any medication. We are kept informed
of changes to our mum, whether it’s her health or if they are concerned about her well-being. The home is not the biggest, which is one of the reasons I like it. It is more personal and the staff have time to stop and talk to you.
The staff know my mum really well which is comforting for our family.
If I raise any concern it is dealt with immediately which is reassuring.
Reply from Alix Barr, Administrator at Marian House Nursing HomeThanks for taking the time to leave a review. It’s lovely to hear that you recognise the effort we put into keeping our homely environment for the residents, we really do take pride in this. It is a pleasure to have your Mom and the rest of the family as part of the Marian House ‘family’.
As always, if there is anything you need or we can help with in any way, please do not hesitate to let us know and once again, thanks for your very kind words.

Absolutely lovely nursing home. My mom is having ‘end of life’ care and she is so well looked after with lovely staff. Nothing is too much trouble. They look after her as if she was a member of their own family.

My husband became a resident of Marian House Nursing Home in September 2022 and passed away in February 2023. He arrived suffering from advanced Alzheimer's, presenting quite a care challenge. I was full of hope because the building was light, the staff welcoming and the residents were alert because
they were included in all that was going on around them. Over the following six months, I was never disappointed. The patience, care and love shown to all residents came from the top and spread out through the whole team. The home is really clean, the food is plentiful, home-cooked and delicious. The laundry is well organized and activities inspired. Meetings are held for relatives both to share changes and to invite feedback.
Looking for a care home that will suit your loved one is difficult and visits often just showcase facilities. Standards of care are more difficult to judge. Marian House Nursing Home is one of the best and I thank the whole team for the care that gave me peace of mind and gratitude.
Reply from Alix Barr, Administrator at Marian House Nursing HomeThank you very much Margaret, for taking the time to review our home and for your kind words. I would highly recommend Marian House Nursing Home. Mum moved into the home in April 2022 where she resided until she passed away in January 2023. Mum had struggled in her previous home but we saw her come to life when she joined residents and staff at Marian House. Her self confidence increased, she
was encouraged to exercise, enjoyed her hobby of bird watching and other very meaningful activities. The garden is lovely and Mum was actively encouraged to engage in outdoor activities. As a retired Occupational Therapist who has a particular interest in older adult care, in particular dementia care, I observed staff uphold my mum's dignity, acknowledging her lived experience of dementia. When Mum left notes to the milkman outside her bedroom door listing all the household items she needed for that week she was supported by staff to preserve her special identity, to remember the busy mum and primary school teacher she had once been. Staff were always very supportive to us.
Reply from Alix, Administrator at Marian House Nursing HomeThank you for such a positive review, we take great pride in our dementia care. It was our pleasure to see your mum become so at home here and how quickly she settled in. Your kind words and hearing that you can recognise the effort that we make here in all areas of care and especially to preserve the dignity of residents are really appreciated by us all here.

My aunt had been a resident of Marian House for over two years until she passed away a few days ago. The care she received was on the whole very good, for many staff it was a vocation not just a job who were excellent and very patient. If problems arose, which over a two year period were inevitable,
I would go straight to the manager who would act immediately and find a solution to rectify the situation. My aunt was treated with respect and as an adult, she was allowed to make her own decisions and given choices with her care. I can't say her care was always excellent but I don't think this is the case in any residential facility but the management team always encouraged feedback both positive and negative to help improve things. I would like to thank in particular four members of staff for always making myself and my aunt welcome and for going above and beyond for my aunt's welfare. A special thanks goes out to the hostess who was simply exceptional.

I am very happy with the quality of care given to my mother, the nursing staff are excellent and are always caring and treat her with dignity and kindness. All the staff are excellent and the tea lady and cleaner always have a cheerful outlook when they are with her.
The management team are very approachable
and will always offer help if required.
The staff are always busy. I would like to be able to chat through my mother's updated situation a little more but this is being resolved by the patients care records being available via wifi soon.
I would recommend this centre to anyone who has a relative who requires nursing care.

10 mm steel nut tied to the end of the light pull, wardrobe door that can only open a few inches as it hits the wall mounted tv bracket, items from a previous person who had room 32 left in draws. No rail on the side of the bed.
Reply from Marian House, Admin at Marian House Nursing HomeThank you for your comments, which we have taken on board. We have removed the TV today so you now have full access to the wardrobe. Apologies, we were not aware of the pull cord issue, which we have also resolved today.
We would invite you to come in and discuss this further in person if you wish.
Thank You.

Having dismissed three caring agencies over an 18 month period for taking advantage of my mother's vulnerability I was fully alert and observant of Marian House when my mother became a resident there between October and middle December 2017. After which my mother sadly passed away.
However rather
than find fault, to my delight I became fully aware of the dedication to provide maximum professional care to all residents. Marian House staff have the compassion and all other fine qualities to comfort each resident and satisfy their loved ones of ultimate care given.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.813)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.813) out of 10 for Marian House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 21 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.813 for Marian House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (203 Excellents x 5) + (40 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 246 Ratings = 4.813
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Marian House Nursing Home is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 42 registered maximum number of service users is 8.4, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I joined this great team in April 2021 as a care assistant, progressing to Senior Carer later that year. I took the role of Lead Activity Coordination in March 2024 after helping out with activities and finding that I loved the job and wanted to do it permanently.

Before joining Marian House, I worked as a Care Coordinator for a domiciliary care company as well as a dispenser in a pharmacy. I worked at both for several years before deciding to move over to nursing care.

I have found a passion for End-of-life care as well as Dignity in care. I have done a lot of training on these subjects which aids me in providing this care for the residents here at Marian House. I have just qualified in my NVQ Level 4 in Lead Adult Care, which I am very proud of. I love my job and thoroughly enjoy bringing joy and smiles to the resident's faces and lives, as well as coming up with new ideas and finding entertainment groups for the home.

Outside of work, my husband and I and our dog spend a lot of time outside, whether it be in the garden, gardening and looking after our pond, or going out for walks around our local Park. I enjoy playing the guitar, and my dad and I have regular jamming sessions, to our neighbour's dismay.
