Overall Experience

I have found Maple Leaf House to have a pleasant soothing ambience for residents. The friendly staff are cheerful and lively and encourage a feeling of serenity and well-being, giving an atmosphere that is calm, peaceful and tranquil. There is also a sense of cleanliness and order with exemplary medical care. Healthy eating is encouraged with an excellent balanced menu which includes a variety of protein foods. The building provides an airy, commodious and comfortable home-from-home setting. The home has excellent facilities and hosts numerous themed days and activities which keep residents happy and engaged. There is additional emotional support for residents with the position of a chaplain who gives one-to-one care with a listening ear and comfort. All in all, I have found the staff to be compassionate, kind, helpful, attentive, caring and patient and would thoroughly recommend Maple Leaf House.

My husband has been very well cared for at Maple Leafe House since 2019. I feel the staff know him well and that he is happy there. Each resident is treated as an individual, and levels of care are carefully managed. Families are encouraged to be involved and to support the home. Acitvities and events are well organised and cover a wide range of interests.

My wife has been a resident at Maple Leaf House for nearly seven years. Her care throughout this time has been very good. The pandemic of the last two years has been difficult and several excellent staff have left, but good replacements have been found. Things began to improve considerably when I was made an 'essential carer' and I am now able to visit her nearly every day. I would be pleased to answer anyone's questions about the home.

My husband seems very settled and content to be at Maple Leaf House and I am grateful for that, but poor communication from the home has been a problem and has caused me some anxiety. Contact with a care home was new to me when my husband was admitted last year, an introductory booklet would have been helpful as well as the key information booklet. Lockdowns haven't helped but it sometimes seems that the home assumes we know what is happening, how the home is run and the day to day routines. Communication between the home and relatives may be improving with the introduction of friends and relatives meetings.

Reply from Sam Stone, Home Manager at Maple Leaf House

I sincerely apologise that your husband's admission into the home wasn’t the best experience, however, we hope we can learn lessons to prevent that from happening in the future. Hopefully, you can see the improvements we have made with regards to communication and I intend for this to continue....

Since my mother has been at Maple Leaf House, I have always been very happy with the care that Mum has and is still receiving. All her care needs have been met by all the staff, they are kind and patient. I am very disappointed in this care home, mainly in the way things are run and the lack of leadership from management. A very poor attitude from those at the top, while those at the bottom are left fighting to do the right thing against this poor leadership. On many occasions, I see bad attitudes towards staff. Which in turn has a negative effect on how the staff themselves behave. This place has a, treat them bad so they work harder mantra. Putting the attitude of the staff who actually keep the place going down. A few words of encouragement from management would go along way and make the place feel and work so much better. I have also come across many things I would deem as unacceptable. Medication on the floor, which anyone could pick up. Dirty conditions while the cleaners are seen chatting away in corridors and being told: "It's not my wing" when asked politely if they will clean something up. Carers telling me they are going on their break so won't help. Please sort it out MHA.

My aunt died at Maple Leaf House in September after 3 years there. The whole team were excellent through the 3 years from cleaner to Home Manager. They learnt to understand my aunt. Thank you for a dignified end, despite the Covid epidemic and the precautions that were needed. The whole team understood her needs and were there until the end. Thank you.

Reply from Simone Greatrex, Home Manager at Maple Leaf House

Your aunt was a much respected member of our family and we cared for her deeply. We do miss how she brightened the days and also yourself. Please do keep in touch and we hope to be able to welcome you back to Maple Leaf in the future so that we can hold a memorial service.

My husband was a resident in Maple Leaf House, Ripley, Derby for three months. Maple Leaf House and all of its staff were kindness personified, not only to my husband but also to our family when visiting. They were sensitive to all of our needs in what could have been a very stressful time. Every member of staff maintained a truly professional attitude, combined with cheerfulness in their care for residents' personal dignity within all aspects of their caring roles. Nursing care at Maple Leaf House is second to none; my husband and chaplain were ably led by management, all of whom ensured that my husband's last three months of life were as comfortable as possible. We are forever grateful. Thank you to all of you.

I am neighbour/carer/power of attorney for my dear friend who has been in residence since 2017. It was with anxiety that a dementia specialist home was chosen, but there were some issues which necessitated it. I was reassured fairly quickly that the choice/decision had been right.
Her room is lovely, the building design is appropriate giving the opportunity for alternative areas for relaxation, meals, socialising/entertainment etc, and provides a clean (odourless), calm and comfortable environment throughout.

Their priority is always the care and happiness of residents. The manageress, administration and all support teams function brilliantly with a calm, friendly, professional approach. This enables the 'front of house' carers to fulfil their role so well; always tolerant, gentle, kind and go to great lengths to ensure the happiness of all residents with individual characters and needs. Always cheerful with fun/entertainment as appropriate.

My husband is very settled at Maple Leaf House, and it has now become his home. The staff at Maple Leaf helped my family during his transition to living at the home and from then on, they could not be more loving and caring towards him. The staff team work diligently to ensure that the residents are clean and warm, active and entertained, and we can see that he feels loved. His room is spotless, and he even gets his favourite mashed potatoes most days! Residents and visitors are treated respectfully, and we always feel welcome when we visit. Both I and my family, can't thank Maple Leaf enough for the care they have provided to my husband.

Maple Leaf nursing home is a warm and friendly environment which brings lots of happiness to residents and their families and has always worked hard to protect my mum and all the residents during this awful pandemic.

My mum has been a resident since she was 88 and during this time, staff have genuinely cared for my now 93-year-old mum with mixed dementia and other health needs. Difficult as it is that I can't see her, I know she is being well cared for, so just wanted to say a big thank you to each and every one. Stay safe.

Dad arrived at Maple Leaf House at the end of January, transferring from a residential home, which had been unable to meet his increasing needs. We have seen a wonderful improvement in the intervening months. Dad always looks smart and clean-shaven. He has a lovely room with a view of a courtyard garden.
When Dad had a serious fall, we were concerned that he would lose mobility and become a wheelchair user full time, but the team at Maple House were so caring, attentive and encouraging that Dad was back using his walking frame within a fortnight.
We are unable to visit during the Covid lockdown, but the new social media page, gives us regular updates and photos and we have regular telephone conversations with Dad.

We are so grateful to all management and staff - nurses, carers and caterers, for giving Dad the best quality of life possible.

Reply from Sue Wilson, Home Manager at Maple Leaf House

Thank you for your comments. Let me assure you that your Dad has been a blessing to us too; his charm, wit and determination to recover from his fall and walk again was a fabulous reward for the staff that helped him to reach that goal. Your Dad is a very much loved member of ‘our family’ along with all the other residents and we thank you for trusting us with his care.

My mum has been at Maple Leaf only a few months but I am so pleased with the care and support that she, myself, my brother and sister have received. The staff are so friendly and show genuine concern for all the residents which is heartwarming to see. We are kept updated on mums situation at all times. My mother moved here a couple of months ago and from the start of her living here I can only say how brilliant all of the staff have been. The manager and administrator made the move extremely simple and mum settled in immediately. The accommodation is 5 star as is the care given on an on-going basis.

I can definitely recommend Maple Leaf in every way.

My mother has been in the nursing home since November 2018. We are extremely pleased with the level of care/nursing that my mother is receiving. The layout of the home is excellent, all on one level with the rooms set out in a circle around a central enclosed garden. The standard of housekeeping is very high. The rooms are spacious and well equipped with full en suite facilities. The environment is very calming. There are nurses on site 24/7 and they keep me fully involved with regards to my mothers care plan. They do not hesitate to contact me concerning my mother's welfare. All the staff, from the home manager through to the cleaning and catering staff work tirelessly to make all residents as comfortable as possible. They are all very friendly and approachable.

I have no hesitation in recommending this home to any potential new residents and their family.
